Full Job Description

As a Procurement Category Manager for Energy focused on North America, you will lead strategic efforts in the procurement of energy-related goods and services. This role involves developing and executing comprehensive category strategies, conducting market research, managing supplier relationships, and driving sustainability initiatives. You will play a key role in cost optimization, risk management, and stakeholder engagement, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and industry partners. Additionally, you will spearhead decarbonization efforts to align with the company's environmental goals.

Areas of Responsibility

As a Procurement Category Manager for Energy focusing on North America, you will play a pivotal role in our procurement team. Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Category Strategy Development: Develop and execute comprehensive category strategies for the Energy sector in North America, aligning them with the company's overall Energy- and sustainability objectives and business goals.

Market Research and Analysis: Conduct thorough market research to identify trends, pricing fluctuations, and emerging technologies within the Energy category. Translate findings into actionable insights for procurement decisions.

Supplier Management: Establish and nurture relationships with key suppliers in the Energy sector. Negotiate contracts, manage performance, and ensure compliance with agreed-upon terms and conditions.

Cost Optimization: Implement cost-saving initiatives and strategies without compromising quality or service levels. Continuously identify opportunities for cost reduction and process improvement.

Decarbonization Initiatives: Drive initiatives to reduce carbon footprint within the Energy category aligned with the DS Smith Carbon Roadmap. Collaborate with suppliers to identify and implement sustainable practices, supporting the company's commitment to environmental stewardship.

Risk Management: Assess and mitigate risks associated with the Energy category, in line with the Group Energy risk policies, ensuring business continuity and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Collaboration and Communication: As a member of the DS Smith Energy Team support centrally managed projects, participate in Energy Team meetings (virtually and in person on demand), Work closely with cross-functional teams including operations, finance, and legal departments to ensure seamless procurement processes and alignment with organizational objectives.

Sustainability and Compliance: Drive sustainable procurement practices within the Energy category, ensuring adherence to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

Stakeholder Engagement and Management: Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders, including cross-functional teams, executives, and industry partners, to ensure alignment of procurement strategies with organizational goals and objectives.

Controlling Budgets and Forecasts: Manage and control budgets related to the Energy category. Develop and monitor forecasts to ensure accurate financial targets are provided to the business.

Education & Qualification:

BS/BA in Energy Economics, Supply Chain, Electrical Engineering or similar field
5+ years of experience with increasing responsibility

Ability to shift priorities quickly, while maintaining organization and control
Proven track record of process improvement
SAP systems experience a plus
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills
A proven team player
Project Management Skills required
Preferred Certified Energy Manager
Preferred background in Capex or development of onsite energy generation

Skills & Ability

Demonstrates thoughtful leadership in creating efficiencies and process improvements while maintaining a strong customer focus.
Negotiations on high value national contracts
Proven track record of driving cost savings initiatives
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
Familiar with North American energy markets and regulations pertaining to electricity and natural gas in regulated and deregulated markets.
