LINEMAN-HOURLY

Successful candidates must pass a drug screen, physical and a background investigation. Persons offered employment must pass all pre-employment exams prior to appointment.

These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with I.B.E.W. – LOCAL 9 (BARGAINING UNIT 29)

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL RESULT IN A REJECTED BID APPLICATION

Under supervision, installs, repairs, and tests aerial and underground electrical wires, fixtures, and related equipment, and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Installs and connects electrical lines, fiber optics, and cables to power sources.

Splices and terminates copper and fiber optic cables.

Cuts, bends, and fits conduit into trenches and installs new electrical wire.

Relocates existing electrical installations and fixtures to facilitate street construction projects.

Performs voltage tests to determine type of wire and level of functionality.

Locates and repairs breaks in underground electrical lines.

Removes decayed or broken cable and installs new conduit pipe and cable.

Assembles and installs electrical fixtures (e.g., light poles, lamps, traffic signal heads, surveillance cameras).

Tests fire alarm circuits and the timing of traffic signals and streetlamps to ensure proper operation.

Prepares work activity reports.

Operates an aerial boom from a line truck to reach aerial wires, as required.

Marks cable locations on streets to prevent damage by other work crews and contractors, as required.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Shifts: 7:30 am – 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday

Salary: $56.55 per hour

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE.

Qualifications

Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered lineman apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

A valid state of Illinois driver’s license is required at the time of hire and must be maintained through the duration of employment
Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds) is required
Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time
Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs
Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or step stools
Ability to access difficult to enter spaces (e.g., roofs, basements, tanks, field equipment, cramped quarters)
Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment
Ability to tolerate heights while working

WORKING CONDITIONS

NOTE: APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAM CERTIFICATE(S), PROFESSIONAL LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL CARDS, JOURNEYMAN CARD, RESUME, A VALID STATE OF ILLINOIS DRIVER'S LICENSE AND PROOF OF PROPERLY INSURED AUTOMOBILE INCLUDING A CLAUSE SPECIFICALLY INSURING THE CITY OF CHICAGO FROM ACCIDENT LIABILITY, MUST BE SUBMITTED AT THE TIME OF PROCESSING.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position does not require an interview. This position requires applicants to successfully complete a written/skills assessment test. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after the test results have been compiled and analyzed. Applicants who receive a passing score on the written test will be invited to complete a practical assessment. Applicants who receive a passing score on both the written test and the hands-on assessment will be hired in lottery/random order. If you are a bidder, you will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.
