About Adirondack Roots: Adirondack Roots is dedicated to building vital and sustainable communities by helping individuals and families put down roots and stay in the North Country. We provide essential services that improve housing quality, access and affordability for low to moderate-income residents of the Adirondacks at a time when housing insecurity is rising throughout the region.

Community Development Director Purpose: Adirondack Roots’ Community Development Director leads a three-person team in aligning housing rehabilitation resources with community needs. This role is responsible for effectively managing Adirondack Roots’ Community Development team in the successful implementation of grant programs, including housing rehabilitation, mobile home replacement, and housing counseling. This position assesses and builds capacity for the department, establishes and meets quantifiable objectives and establishes and ensures compliance with policies and operating procedures.

The Community Development Director is a master multitasker who possesses excellent interpersonal and written communication skills as well as a commitment to improving rural communities. The position works closely with internal staff, external partners and municipal officials to improve housing conditions and address housing needs throughout Adirondack Roots’ service area.

Community Development Director Responsibilities:

Oversight of all aspects of Community Development programs, including but not limited to housing rehabilitation programs and housing counseling
Manages successful rehabilitation and mobile home replacement programs by meeting milestones, productivity goals and budget targets
Supervises department staff including managing priorities and work load
Determines, recommends and develops new grant applications based on community need data, community feedback, and organization priorities
Develops and administers grant program budgets; ensures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time; prepares accurate financial disbursement documents
Responsible for creating and submitting all reports
Develops and maintains excellent relationships with elected officials, community members, county agencies, partner organizations, funding agencies, and others
Develops, recommends and implements department policies and procedures
Ensures department compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations
Prepares a variety of studies, reports and related information for decision-making purposes
Reviews the work of staff for completeness and accuracy; offers advice and assistance as needed
Supervises and ensures the preparation and maintenance of accurate and up-to-date department records
Coordinates department activities and functions with those of other Adirondack Roots programs
Represents Adirondack Roots at community and professional convenings and participates as a member of various committees as appropriate
Directs and participates in department marketing and public relations efforts; makes public presentations to inform the public about department projects and programs
Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance
Performs general administrative / clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving data, conducting and attending meetings, etc.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in related field of study and 2 years of prior experience in housing and community development. A Master’s Degree may be substituted for working experience
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
Grant writing and administration experience
Familiarity with planning, code enforcement, and/or real estate appraisal
Strong Microsoft Office and database skills
Superb attention to detail
Commitment to improving the lives of community members with substandard homes
Ability to travel within the North County and occasionally out of state to conferences and professional development opportunities

Compensation & Benefits:

Pay: $55,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
Our comprehensive benefits package includes 100% employer-paid health insurance for full-time employees beginning the first day of employment. We provide 100% employer-paid dental and vision insurance for employees and their families. Each full-time employee receives employer-paid life insurance and a retirement benefit comprised of a contribution to a SEP-IRA account with no match required. Employees receive 4 weeks of combined vacation and sick time as Paid Time Off each calendar year as well as 12 fixed and 1 floating holidays. The Adirondack Roots office is closed between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
