A Lead Fiber Optic Cable Splicer (Inside Plant) is experienced in leading Splicing crews for the entire duration of Fiber Optic Installation projects. This person is a leader capable of managing, training, and mentoring a crew of 2-3 people while on site.
Job Requirements:
The Lead Fiber Optic Cable Splicer is a hands-on role that will work closely with the Project Manager and Installation Technicians. The duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Read and interpret design drawings, blueprints, and installation guides.
- Very experienced with splicing Fiber Optic Cable, up to and including 144 fiber count by means of fusion splicing with heat shrink protection.
- Be able to perform single (loose tube) splicing utilizing fusion splicing.
- Be experienced in the operation of core alignment machines.
- Familiar with the installation of fiber sleeve, wipes, cable tags and tie wraps
- Management of the installation of conduit, risers, cable trays or cable ladders.
- Ensuring installations comply with applicable codes such as ANSI/TIA/EIA 588-B Commercial Building Telecommunication Cabling Standard, the National Electrical Safety Code and other applicable local and national codes concerned with quality and safety. Training on these codes will be provided if necessary.
- Keeping company informed on progress of the Splicing portion of the project. Communicating and coordinating with customer and company related to specific safety, local code, and company installation requirements.
- Assisting in proposal development and project preparation activities.
- Completing site surveys to verify site construction diagrams, determination of site installation materials (specifically splicing materials), verify site installation/construction scope and extent of work for fiber optic installations. Report findings to the appropriate staff.
- Ensure that Splicing and other Fiber test equipment is maintained in accordance with the equipment manufacturer’s recommended procedures or customers procedures.
- Conduct OTDR and/or Power Measurement testing (as per customers procedures) on Fiber Optic Cable reels in the case where it is suspected that the Fiber Optic may have been damaged in transit.
- Assist with development of project schedules and materials selection.
- Accurately reports status, material usage, and expenses.
- Mentoring and leading less experienced technicians.
- Update customer prints, documentation, and facilitates document storage.
- Assisting in warehouse maintenance and inventory.
Minimum Requirements:
The Lead Fiber Optic Cable Splicer/Tester is responsible for executing ISP Fiber Optic Installation projects. Qualified candidates:
- MUST HAVE a minimum of 3 years of Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing experience on loose tube fiber optic cable.
- Must have extensive experience in performing fusion splicing, fiber terminations, fiber dressing, fiber cleaning and OTDR Testing.
- Corning and EXFO Certifications a plus.
- High level of understanding of Fiber Optic Cable installation procedures in overheads, cable trays and j-hooks, etc.
- Knowledge of the terminology used in the Telecommunications and Fiber Optic Cable installation industry.
- Demonstrated ability to use basic hand and power tools needed for installation projects.
- Experienced in coaching less experienced technicians while managing projects.
- Solid skills with Microsoft Office Software (particularly Excel).
- Experienced in creating splice reports that detail the splice(s) to be performed as well as the configuration of the existing splices.
In addition, qualified Candidates will have the ability to:
- Travel to project locations nationwide, if required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Pass a criminal background check, drug screening and a pre-employment physical.
- Lift upwards of 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Repeatedly ascend and descend ladders ranging in height from 6ft to 20ft.
- Be able to work in attic-type space, drop ceiling, and other spaces safely, without falling through the ceiling.
- Experienced with pulling and handling cable without damaging it.
- Walk continuously throughout the jobsite while carrying ladders, tools, and installation materials.
- Must provide basic hand tools.
- Demonstrate ability to work in a professional manner at all job sites.
- Deliver customer service, use great communication skills, and demonstrate ability to work well on a team.
- Think analytically and to solve complex problems.
- Drive performance and execute against plan.
- Demonstrate ability to complete installations independently as projects require, while working with a sense of urgency.
Preferred Certifications:
If the candidate does not have any of the following certifications, they must have the ability to become certified within a year of being hired, if required. Company will pay for training.
