Full Job Description

Patterson & Dewar Engineers is seeking an experienced electric utility focused Structural Engineer to join our team. Reporting to the Civil Engineering Manager, the Engineer will be responsible for independently designing and analyzing structural components (substation structures, transmission structures and foundations) on the electric utility system. The Engineer should be familiar with current structural and seismic codes and foundation design software.

Responsibilities

Design, analyze, and detail substation structures using current IBC, ASCE, AISC and NESC in collaboration with other engineers, technicians, and client personnel
Substation structural analysis utilizing STAAD, RAM Concept, GTStrudl or equivalent finite element analysis software or hand calculations
Substation structures to include both HSS and lattice structures.
Detail steel drawings for a fabrication ready package including all connections and members.
Design responsibilities will be for both new construction and retrofit applications.
Design, analyze, and detail transmission structures using current IBC, ASCE, AISC and NESC.
Transmission structural design and analysis to utilize PLS suite
Transmission structures to include steel, concrete and wood poles.
Design responsibilities will be for both new construction and retrofit applications.
Design, analyze, and detail foundations for transmission and substation structures using current codes, including ACI 318 and ACI 336.
Analyze geotechnical data and soils report for site specific design
Design foundations utilizing MFAD, PLS-Caisson, LPILE or equivalent software
Foundation design to include caissons, spread footers, and pad designs
Provide SPCC design for transformers and other oil filled equipment
Design review
Review both internal and external documents for technical accuracy, best means and methods and constructability.
Prepare, review and stamp documents and drawings (i.e. specifications, design criteria, construction documents, and as-builts)
Manage individual projects effectively and lead a project team of technicians on larger efforts
Train and mentor team members on technical aspects of the projects
Create material breakdown sheets and develop construction bid packages and assist in estimating job costs
Travel to project sites to gather design information; make assessments of existing systems, provide technical advice, direct and assist construction crews, if necessary
Maintain current and working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (i.e. RUS, NESC, ASCE)
Develop proposals (scope of work, estimate, etc.)

Skills and Qualifications

A BS in Civil or Mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited university
10+ years of experience in electric utility structural design
Professional Engineer (P.E.) a must; S.E. preferred
Ability to communicate effectively and honestly, both written and verbal, to clients and colleagues
The ability and willingness to travel approximately 30% annually
The ability and willingness to work extended hours to meet project deadlines
Attention to detail
Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems
Strong organizational skills
Integrity – the P&D way of doing business and as a professional engineer
Knowledge – utility systems, power line design, leadership
Service-oriented attitude
Initiative, self-sufficiency, and a strong desire to learn and train others
Attention to safety and the welfare of co-workers and clients
Proficiency with Microsoft® Office (required), and Office 365 and SharePoint (preferred)

The Candidate may be asked to work extended hours occasionally to meet project deadlines. Candidates must pass a background check prior to employment.
