Job Summary

We are seeking a dynamic and talented leader to guide and nurture the church’s music ministry with joy, creativity, and enthusiasm. The right person will be able to engage the congregation in intergenerational, inclusive worship and provide a welcome for any music-related activities which might be integrated into our congregation's life.

Primary responsibilities:

Serve as a role model for UPC’s vision for welcoming and inclusive intergenerational worship that connects people to each other and to God.
Collaborate with the Pastor to plan engaging intergenerational worship experiences that support the spiritual and musical growth of the congregation, the community, and the musicians. This includes ensuring that music and worship activities and other liturgical elements support the theme of each service.
Provide leadership for all music programs of the church, collaborating closely with the Pastor and the Worship and the Arts Committee to include all ages in music programming.
Take the lead in AV and digital ministries, managing the quality of the in-house worship sound and the livestreamed experience.

Additional Duties:

Provide an easy on-ramp to encourage congregation and community engagement, including:
Conducting music rehearsals on a regular scheduled basis.
Working to recruit, and train, musicians/vocalists and Tech Deacons. Actively cultivate and manage a list of musicians, vocalists, Tech Deacons and other volunteer resources for engaging as needed.
Training, equipping, setting culture standards, and maintaining positive experiences for instrumentalists, UPC Kids, handbell ringers, vocalists, and Tech Deacons.
Establishing and/or maintaining necessary checklists, schedules and/or processes to facilitate the music ministry programs. Provide opportunities for feedback loops with musicians, Worship and the Arts Committee and engage in worship assessments with the Pastor.
Ensure that lyrics and liturgy are added to worship slides and bulletin by Wednesday morning with any changes submitted before work begins on Thursday.
Coordinate the worship calendar, including seasonal worship planning and worship-related activities, UPC Kids, handbells, Tech Deacons, and coordinating the band schedule. Manage coordination and collaboration between bell choir, worship band, and any musical guests.
Work with the Pastor and Worship and the Arts Committee in building the annual worship and music budget. Manage departmental budget with expectation of being on or under approved annual budget.
Manage, update and report on music library usage in worship including reporting to proper licensing agency in accordance with licensing requirements (OneLicense) for use of music. Maintains music library by purchasing music as needed and providing for the processing, filing and distribution of music to musicians and singers.

A commitment to the Christian faith and willingness to learn about Presbyterian (PCUSA) theology and worship.
The willingness to live into and help strengthen UPC’s inclusive Matthew 25 values as we strive to include people of all ages, races, orientations, and abilities in everything we do and welcome LGBTQIA+ families as full members of our community.
A degree in music education or music performance OR equivalent experience; expertise in working with vocal and instrumental groups, including children; and experience recommending and selecting music appropriate for worship.
Demonstrated digital and AV Tech experience with ability to learn new applications and systems.
The ability to actively engage the congregation during worship as well as in post-worship fellowship.
The ability to lead and manage musicians with a range of ages, ability and experience in a positive and effective manner, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.
A commitment to collaboration and collegiality in the office and in the congregation by maintaining good working relationships and supporting staff and Session (board) decisions. Communicating proactively and responding in a timely manner to requests.
Demonstrated experience with and appreciation of working with volunteers, including the ability to have some fun, be flexible, and adapt well to the unexpected.
Self-starter skills, proactively planning and initiating programs and interactions as appropriate while contributing to creative thinking and planning to help UPC achieve our overall vision.
Strong people, leadership, and management skills with proven supervisory experience leading a diverse team, with the ability to creatively and effectively handle issues or problems that may arise with sound judgment while keeping a positive attitude.
Enthusiasm for this work coupled with good verbal and written communication skills to build energy and momentum.
A commitment to deepening their own spiritual growth.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20,000.00 - $25,000.00 per year
