Interim Payer Reimbursement Variance Analyst/Coder- Arizona

American Consultants is looking for an interim Payer Reimbursement Variance Analyst/Coder. Must have inpatient and outpatient coding experience (CIC/CPC certification). Experience working in critical access hospital, FQHC, or IHS space is a plus.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Payer Reimbursement Variance Analyst is responsible for safeguarding the organization’s financial integrity by identifying, analyzing, and resolving reimbursement variances, including overpayments and underpayments, across hospital and outpatient services. This role partners closely with Revenue Cycle, Compliance, Coding, and Finance to ensure payments are accurate, contractually aligned, and compliant with applicable regulations. A key focus includes adherence to Medicare requirements, ensuring timely identification and resolution of overpayments in accordance with CMS and MAC guidelines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Audit & Variance Identification

· Review paid claims to identify overpayments, underpayments, and duplicate payments across Medicare, Medicaid, Workers’ Compensation, and commercial payers.

· Analyze remittance data (835s), EOBs, and payment trends to identify discrepancies.

· Validate payments against contracts, fee schedules, DRG/APC methodologies, and applicable reimbursement structures.

Medicare Overpayment Compliance

· Identify and validate potential Medicare overpayments in alignment with CMS guidelines.

· Ensure compliance with the CMS 60-Day Overpayment Rule, including proper documentation of identification timelines.

· Coordinate timely refunds and adjustments in accordance with federal requirements.

· Maintain clear and defensible documentation to support audits and regulatory reviews.

· Work closely with Compliance on appropriate escalation and reporting processes.

Root Cause Analysis & Process Improvement

· Investigate underlying causes of variances, including coding, billing, or system-related issues

· Partner with operational teams to implement corrective actions and prevent repeat issues

· Track and trend recurring findings to support long-term improvement efforts

Financial Coordination & Reporting

· Quantify financial impact of findings, including recoverable amounts and risk exposure

· Support Finance with accurate reporting of overpayment liabilities and recoveries

· Prepare clear, concise reports for leadership outlining trends and opportunities

Collaboration & Audit Support

· Work closely with Coding, Billing, Compliance, and Revenue Integrity teams

· Support internal and external audits, including RAC, MAC, and other regulatory reviews

· Contribute to staff education efforts focused on improving billing accuracy and compliance

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

· Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field (or equivalent experience will be considered)

EXPERIENCE

· 3–6 years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle, auditing, or reimbursement analysis

· Experience with hospital and outpatient billing strongly preferred

· Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer requirements

· Experience with EHR/RCM systems such as Allscripts/Altera Sunrise, Epic, or Cerner preferred

Certifications (Preferred)

· CPC, CCS, CHC, or CRCR

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Solid understanding of revenue cycle workflows and reimbursement processes

· Working knowledge of CMS regulations, including the 60-Day Overpayment Rule

· Ability to interpret payer contracts and apply reimbursement logic

· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

· Proficiency in Excel and data analysis tools

· High attention to detail and ability to manage sensitive financial data

Pay: From $2,600.00 per week
