Full Job Description

Church Publishing Incorporated (CPI) was founded in 1918 as the Church Hymnal Corporation, a nonprofit affiliate of the Church Pension Group. Today, CPI’s professionals produce about 50 new books and resources each year, and manage a portfolio of more than 2,600 active products, many sold worldwide.

The Sr. Editor will acquire and edit books across imprints including trade, professional and academic. This position will generate ideas, reach out to potential authors, work with agents and manage submissions in line with the overall identity of the publishing house. This position will work closely with authors to develop content and shepherd projects from acquisition to publication and beyond, ensuring a successful publication defined by revenue goals.

Effective performance of the essential functions of this position requires regular in-person, on-site interaction with colleagues, both for purposes of relationship building and meaningful collaboration

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned

Acquire and edit trade, professional and academic titles.
Generate ideas and present them.
Prepare necessary editorial and acquisitions packets including descriptions, selling points and comparative titles. Write copy.
Adhere to metadata guidelines in the presentation of information to sales accounts.
Edit manuscripts, keeping to production and publication schedules.
Manage permissions as necessary.
Manage author and agent communications.
Facilitate contractual agreements.
Work closely with marketing to maximize sales.
Present at sales conferences and attend conferences and book fairs as necessary.
Knowledge or interest in faith-based publishing.

Experienced in acquisitions and manuscript editing
Excellent communication skills—written, oral, editing, and presentation

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

B.S. or B.A. required
8+ years of editorial experience in a book publishing company

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Commuting to the NY office, on average, three days a week. Extensive use of a computer keyboard is a demand of the position to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. WORK ENVIRONMENT

Hybrid (two days working from home, three days working in a standard office environment). Salary Range: $81,000 to $105,000
