Full Job Description

Under the general supervision of the SVP of Development and Communications, the External Relations Associate will promote communications and highlight the agency's core messages to the media, Diocese, community, clients, donors, intra-agency, administration and staff, and other constituency groups. The Development and Communications Office functions include public relations, media relations and marketing, message making, publication management, fundraising stories, public and crisis communications, and up-to-date skills in public messaging.

The External Relations Associate serves as an additional liaison with the news media on behalf of the agency, assists in developing the appropriate tone and positioning for key messages, and reports directly to the SVP of Development and Communications. A crucial aspect of this role involves telling client and program stories to illustrate the impact of the agency's work, effectively engaging stakeholders, and fostering positive connections with the public and donors. The External Relations Associate is also closely involved in producing various social media reels, publications, web content from conception through production, and public advocacy campaigns. This position also requires liaising with third-party marketing and web companies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Write and release press releases to media.

Assist the social media manager in administering video messaging on social media.

Assist in media relations for the Agency, working together with SVP of Development and Communications.

Developing client and program profiles.

Support the agency in the development of outreach projects, such as advocacy campaigns, and media campaigns.

Creating news content for website and agency publications.

Write articles for agency magazine, Caritas Now

Collect content profiles, photos, videos, and secure consent.

Assist in the design and layout agency publications.

Produce video reels and media video releases.

Coordinate annual video production.

Represent Catholic Charities at events.

Photograph and document events.

Will be called upon to provide talking points, coaching and preparation to CCBQ employees for media interviews.

Act as a liaison with the Diocese of Brooklyn and the DeSales Media Group. Maintains ongoing contact with: (1) the Diocese of Brooklyn and the DeSales Media Group to ensure the efforts of Catholic Charities are being communicated; (2) all diocesan and local reporters who cover the organization and works to maximize accurate and balanced media coverage to deliver important information to external constituencies.

Performs other tasks as may be assigned by the SVP of Development and Communications

SPECIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

3-4 years communications/public relations experience or advance degree (master’s in communications, Journalism or related field). In addition, experience in publications management and journalism, media public relations, marketing, public and crisis communications, and publicity are required.

Experience in the fields of journalism, media, publishing, or electronic communications with a demonstrated ability to initiate and complete creative projects.

Experience in media relations and understanding the importance of coordinated, unified messages through a variety of formats: the press, television, radio, publications, and the Web.

Possess excellent creative, cooperative, and collaborative skills, an ability to work on deadline, and attention to detail.

Clear understanding of the structures and the various roles of the Diocese of Brooklyn, parishes, and Catholic Charities.

Ability to translate corporate strategies, complex information, and key messages to a wide variety of audiences (with a focus on the Catholic point of view) through various media and the leadership of special events.

Advanced knowledge of Outlook and MS Word and Excel required.

Knowledge of how to use social media.

The ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.

Excellent problem solver, with strong analytical skills.

Detail oriented, well organized with excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
