The Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is a not-for-profit community development organization serving 8,000 residents a year through a comprehensive array of housing preservation, economic development, community organizing and youth and family support services programs and projects. With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community.

Position: Construction Trainer

DREAMS YouthBuild (DYB)

Principal Duties:

Position Summary and Essential Functions

Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Construction Trainer will assist in the instruction of the NCCER construction curriculum and OSHA standards. The trainer will also oversee the on-site gut rehabilitation of low-income affordable units. Additionally, s/he will provide support and guidance to participants and encourage the development of students' leadership skills.

Responsibilities

In the absence of the construction manager, the construction trainer will be responsible for the construction site, maintain production safety, and interface with subcontractors and inspectors.
Teach carpentry skills including demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, and finish carpentry to YouthBuild trainees.
Teach the proper use and handling of all hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
Inform superintendent/ site developer about materials needed for completion of worksite projects.
Monitor student attendance and enforce all worksite regulations such as attendance, safety and uniform compliance.
Keep track of all tools and equipment used on the job on a daily basis.
Assist in personal and vocational counseling and development of trainees leadership skills in conjunction with other YouthBuild staff.
Oversee the evaluation of student knowledge and skills in construction in accordance with NCCER standards
Participate in community service projects.
Attend case management meetings as required by the supervisor.
Attend all meetings and retreats as required.

Position Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree preferred;
At least 5 years of experience in the construction industry;
Up to date knowledge of standards and skills for success in the construction industry;
Certified NCCER and OSHA 30 Construction trainer; preferred
Experience working with low-income at risk young adults preferred;
Strong interpersonal skills; ability to relate to a wide range of issues, people, and institutions;
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills;
Strong public speaking, listening, and written communication skills;
Sense of humor and nonjudgmental attitude;
Ability to work as part of a team;
Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
COVID-19 vaccination.
Bilingual (Spanish, Bengali, or Mandarin) preferred.

Compensation:

$45,000 to $55,000 annually dependent upon experience. We offer a very competitive benefits package.

Work Environment:

The position works primarily a construction worksite setting with some office and classroom instruction time as well. Significant periods of time will be in the community work site setting. This role routinely uses a wide range of standard construction tools and office equipment. Participation in physically demanding situations on a construction worksite or in a team building environment may be required.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Travel:

Travel is expected for this position including overnight participant orientation or other trips as arranged.
