WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Geoinformatics Coordinator will be part of the Global Protect Oceans, Lands, and Water program and will work closely with TNC staff to guide geographical prioritizations, identify target conservation opportunities, and coordinate spatial data needs for TNC’s expanding conservation strategies, including the Global Protect Program’s Nature Bonds, Enduring Earth Partnership, and 30x30 initiatives. The overarching focus of these initiatives is to help the world protect a representative, durable, inclusive, and effectively managed 30% of the planet. This new position will play a critical supporting role by:

Gathering, managing, and synthesizing spatial data to support real-world conservation decisions.

Packaging complex data into products that effectively communicate information to diverse and global audiences.

Designing and improving data-based prioritization exercises to maximize conservation outcomes at multiple scales, from global to local.

Participating in the design, development, and execution of systematic conservation planning for meaningful conservation impact.

Nature Bonds are a key implementation tool for achieving 30x30 by working closely with governments around the world to refinance their debt and unlock significant commitments and resources for conservation. TNC has a successful history utilizing this approach in the marine realm via our Blue Bonds program and is expanding this approach to terrestrial and freshwater systems where additional science capacity is needed.
Enduring Earth is an ambitious collaboration that works alongside nations as they seek to achieve 30% protection and amplify conservation for a more sustainable, prosperous future for people and planet. Central to our approach is Project Finance for Permanence (PFP), an innovative approach that fully funds conservation projects to ensure durable and scalable impact. Spatial planning is the backbone of these ambitious conservation projects and commitments and will leverage previous and new efforts to inform how these significant initiatives develop and are implemented.
30x30: Driven by clear science and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity’s ambitious goals to address the biodiversity crisis, which, amongst several goals, establishes a global commitment to protect 30% of the planet by 2030, known as “30x30”. This is the overarching framework for TNC’s protection efforts. To help ensure this target is effectively implemented in line with global conservation best practices, TNC has an internal 30x30 Initiative that integrates our work across policy, financing conservation, communications and campaigns, sciences, and conservation implementation to maximize our impact to the protection of 30 percent of the world’s terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats by 2030.

Initially, this position will be focused on supporting Nature Bonds projects with crossover to the other initiatives where linkages exist.

The Geoinformatics Coordinator will work globally as a member of diverse project teams comprised of staff from TNC’s Global Protect Oceans Lands and Waters, Global Science, Latin America Region, Africa Region, Tackle Climate Change, External Affairs and Policy, and NatureVest programs, as well as local TNC country teams. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of The Nature Conservancy for a two-year term, with the potential to extend based on funding and need. The location for this position is flexible within countries where The Nature Conservancy is a registered NGO and has an established office. This position is not eligible for relocation or immigration assistance. Occasional travel of up to 20% of time may be required to be fully successful in this position.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

B.S. degree and certification in a related field and 5 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in designing and maintaining a database to meet organizational needs.
Experience in developing and managing multiple projects.
Experience interpreting image analysis, complex spatial analysis, data modeling, and landscape scenario analysis.
Experience preparing reports of findings.
Experience with GIS software and spatial data analysis.
Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree, or preferably a Ph.D., in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Working knowledge of current trends and practices in a relevant discipline(s) and geographic region(s).
Experience working with terrestrial, freshwater, marine, and/or climate-related spatial data to inform conservation prioritizations and/or planning.
Demonstrated experience gathering and managing spatial and other datasets, including metadata and process documentation, and collaborating with external parties to obtain access to data resources.
Experience performing gap analyses and generating maps, reports, or other decision-support products to guide strategy-level decisions, identify conservation opportunities, and/or inform conservation planning efforts.
Ability to coordinate data resources to meet organizational needs across multiple projects, concurrently.
Advanced expertise in the use of Geographic Information Systems (e.g., ArcGIS Pro and extensions, ArcGIS Server, GEE, etc.)
Working knowledge of relevant scripting and programming languages (e.g. R, Python, etc.).
Experience creating standardized cartographic map design and spatial data visualization products.
Experience interpreting image analysis, complex spatial analysis, data modeling, and landscape scenario analysis.
Demonstrated experience recommending conservation actions and/or locations based on scientific analysis results.
Demonstrated experience interpreting and communicating results to diverse audiences, including conservation practitioners and strategy-level advisors.
Experience with stakeholder engagement processes and systematic conservation planning
Experience collaborating with teammates and partners representing a diversity of professional levels and cultures.
Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant
languages.

SALARY INFORMATION

This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times.

For U.S. based applicants only, the starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $55,000 – $82,000 for annual base salary.

For all other applicants, pay ranges will be in local currency, the a pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range.
