Job Description

Virginia Highlands Community College serves our community by providing quality and affordable education, training, and cultural activities through an array of flexible, diverse programs that enable community members to succeed today and in the future.

Provide a safe and secure environment for students, employees, and visitors of Virginia Highlands Community College.
Patrols the College grounds for safety, security and traffic control.
Responds to all reports concerning injury, damage, crime or traffic accidents.
Provides assistance to motorists and emergency victims.
Maintains traffic and/or crowd control.
Completes incident reports in a timely fashion.
Provides good public relations.
Maintains records in an accurate manner; collects and files crime statistics.
Directs visitors and gives information.
Utilizes technology to include computer (Microsoft applications), email, video cameras, cell phone, radio, weather band, proximity lock system and software, digital camera, and other equipment/systems as applicable.
Assists in performing safety inspections; completes technology inspection lists regarding locks, cell phones, cameras, video cameras and other equipment as applicable.
Assists in conducting emergency drills in conjunction with Lead Campus Police Officer and Emergency Planning Officer. Helps conduct safety/emergency drills such as fire drills, Code Adam drills, lockdown drills, tornado drills, and other appropriate drills according to established schedules.
Supervises college work-study employees.
Assists receptionist in determination of lost and found items.
Ability to work afternoon, weekend and evening hours as required.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

Position requires possession of Basic Law Enforcement certificate from Department of Criminal Justice Services and extensive knowledge of police procedures.
Additional areas of required knowledge include: safety and first aid; emergency procedures and NIMS; security technology; and computer usage/Microsoft Office.
Position requires ability to remain calm and decisive in stressful situations.
Communicate clearly with good interpersonal skills; organizational skills; and attention to detail.
Perform duties in a professional, effective and efficient manner in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Work well in a team environment.
Maintain a high level of ethics and confidentiality in performance of all job duties.
Enforce college safety and security regulations in an appropriate manner.
Utilize front-line decision-making skills in: responding to all reports concerning injury, damage, crime or traffic accidents; directing visitors and gives information, assisting receptionist in determination of lost and found items; maintaining traffic and/or crowd control.

Significant experience in the police field. Good physical condition.
