National Headquarters (NHQ) supports the work of The Salvation Army across the United States and internationally by providing leadership, resources, and strategic support to territorial and local operations.
The Multimedia & Digital Communications Developer (MDCD) is primarily responsible for capturing and developing high-standard multimedia content pieces, requiring a high degree of technical expertise and creativity. The position will direct on-set productions in a variety of capacities, including management and instruction of on-set assistants, and in serving as director of photography. The position also cuts and edits collected video footage until it meets the NCRD Leadership’s approval, including rearranging and splicing scenes that have already been shot, and inserting music, sound, or optical effects. This position will be responsible for managing all production equipment owned and leased by The Salvation Army for use in producing video pieces. This will include preparing equipment packages for shoots, cleaning and otherwise maintaining gear, transporting gear, and making recommendations for new purchases.
In addition, the MDCD works specifically to strengthen and enhance the image and awareness of The Salvation Army by identifying compelling stories and supports the communications team during emergency response situations involving National Headquarters, Territorial and Divisional Headquarters and other emergency responder agencies as may be involved.
Key Responsibilities:
- As the primary videography and multimedia development support for the Assistant Director of Communications, the Multimedia & Digital Communications Developer will be responsible for overall video and photography content production, editing, and distribution, furthering the department’s internal and external communication goals.
- Supervises the Multimedia Production Specialist.
- Effectively manages various projects and team deliverables to ensure the video production and motion creative needs of the communications department and NCRD are met.
- Manages/supervises, reviews, coordinates, assigns, prioritizes, monitors, and evaluates the work of direct reports; plans, prioritizes, coordinates, and monitors employees’ work in progress and upon completion; instructs and trains in proper methods and procedures; conducts performance evaluations; provides constructive and positive feedback to employees to improve productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness.
- Coordinates, assigns, prioritizes, and monitors the work of multimedia and video production personnel; provides constructive and positive feedback to improve productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness; informs Assistant Director of Communications of any problems with the quality or production of work; provides recommendations on applicants applying for employment in multimedia production capacities.
Video Production
- Uses photo and video to effectively communicate the mission of The Salvation Army internally and externally, and to achieve the digital communications objectives of The Salvation Army National Headquarters to increase fundraising, and to build and protect The Salvation Army’s brand.
- Serves as the primary source for all cinematography needs on all video productions in the department, both internal and external in nature, including building support for other departments as approved by the Communications Director.
- Ability to visually interpret the story needs of the producers by imagining, visualizing and creating cinematic looks using our existing inventory of tools.
- Demonstrates originality and variety in the “looks” created to keep production’s feeling current and fresh.
- Keeps abreast of current trends in production, with an understanding on how to achieve “looks” using lighting, cameras, and lensing.
- Provides teaching and training for other crew members as well as novices on proper operation of gear and its use to create new and innovative looks.
- Serves as primary editor on all content pieces, including documentary and narrative videos of all types. Editing and other video production tasks can be assigned to the Multimedia Production Specialist or other contracted team members as needed.
- Makes informed creative decisions about cuts to preserve messaging of the piece.
- Takes notes and direction from department and section heads.
- Ability to produce multiple edits from the same raw footage to meet needs of multiple audiences.
- Post-production work may include updating, uploading, and quality control of finished videos and website.
- Responsible for keeping track of (video/capture) cards, transferring footage into computer and ensuring the footage is secure.
- Assists in digital transfer for media management, storage and transfer on hard drives to contracted editors.
- Must be available to travel. Could include domestic and international travel.
- Ability to teach/train interns and novice team members to assist as needed.
Equipment Tracking, Maintenance, and Travel
- Keeps inventory of all production equipment owned by The Salvation Army NHQ.
- Responsible for loading, unloading, and driving of Salvation Army vehicles related to multimedia collection.
- Responsible for routine and special maintenance on all gear.
Social Media
- Assists in the planning, development, and implementation of the digital communications strategy and subsequent content that will appear on the national website and social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube.
- Follows organizational style guide on all digital materials and communications and ensures organization-wide brand alignment by maintaining corporate identity consistency.
- Serves as primary videographer/photographer for feature stories and special events.
Team Collaboration
- Assists in the establishment and implementation of strategic department and external communications goals.
- Provides training as requested on visual content creation as requested. Participates in planning of national conferences and training resources as needed.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with SA Officers, THQ and department staff, volunteers, vendors, and donors.
- Assumes other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other NCRD Leadership.
- Demonstrates dependability through attendance and punctuality.
- Must be prepared to deploy at a moment’s notice to quickly capture a developing story. This includes preparing the deployment of needed digital and multimedia communication equipment in the event that they are needed for urgent situations which sometimes will occur outside scheduled work hours.
Qualifications
Required
Education & Experience
- Associate’s or a Bachelor’s degree in film/television production highly preferred.
- Awareness of film procedure, terminology and production.
- On-set production experience required.
- Working knowledge and proficiency in social media content and engagement strategies
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel PowerPoint, OneDrive), Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Dropbox, and other postproduction software.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficient in usage of all types of camera equipment.
- Proficient in usage of lighting for video production.
- Proficient in audio recording equipment
- Proficient in professional video editing software such as Adobe Premiere, Avid, and DaVinci Resolve.
- Proficient with encoding video to different formats.
- Ability to perform basic color correction and basic lower thirds and graphics.
- Ability to edit sound, including audio cleanup and addition of music beds and sound effects.
- Excellent communication skills; including organizational, proofreading, editing, and problem-solving skills.
- A working knowledge of online communications, including website and social media publishing
