Full Job Description

Position Summary:
The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester is a leading research institution focused on advancing science and technology in high-energy density physics, laser fusion, and related fields. The LLE Electronics and Controls Engineering group is seeking an experienced High-Speed Analog Electronics Design Engineer to join their team. In this role, you will design and support custom high-speed, high-bandwidth electrical circuits and systems for use in high-power experimental laser systems.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including scientists and engineers, to develop innovative solutions, write requirements, lead project reviews, design and field custom equipment, and document final assemblies. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Design, assemble, document, test, and troubleshoot high-speed analog electronic circuits and systems.
Utilize laboratory electrical measurement techniques, including high-bandwidth oscilloscopes and RF/microwave test equipment.
Create and maintain CAD schematic capture files and circuit designs.
Perform component-level circuit design and troubleshooting.
Simulate circuits using SPICE or equivalent software.
Apply knowledge of lumped and distributed circuit analysis to ensure optimal performance.
Manage projects according to budget and schedule, ensuring on-time delivery of high-quality results.

Qualifications:

Required:
PhD in Electrical Engineering with 3 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with 6 years of experience, or equivalent training and experience.
Strong theoretical and hands-on knowledge of circuit design, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.
Proficiency in laboratory electrical measurement techniques, including high-speed oscilloscopes and RF/microwave test equipment.
Experience with CAD schematic capture tools and component-level circuit design.
Proficient in circuit simulation using SPICE or similar tools.
Strong understanding of lumped and distributed circuit analysis.
Ability to work within established budgets and timelines.
Desired Skills/Experience:
Strong documentation skills and attention to detail.
Knowledge of high-speed circuit board layout concepts (e.g., grounding, shielding, microstrip transmission lines, and parasitic element reduction).
Experience with nanosecond and picosecond timing and measurement techniques.
Previous experience in a project management role, including budgeting and time management.
A passion for learning new concepts, skills, and techniques.
