Full Job Description

A Visual/Print Designer position just opened up in Pasadena, CA at the JPL/NASA facility. In this role you will design art and copy layouts for material to be presented by visual communications media such as books, magazines, newspapers, Internet websites, television, and packaging. You must have a minimum of 8 years of related experience and be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Location: Pasadena, CA 91109 (must be local; onsite needed)
Position: Presentation Designer
Pay Rate: $70-90/hour DOE
Duration: 18 months or longer
Schedule: Part Time/As Needed

Responsibilities:

Designs art and copy layouts for material to be presented by visual communications media such as books, magazines, newspapers, Internet websites, television, and packaging. Typical Functions Develops materials manually or utilizes graphic software to design and produce finished artwork or product. Plans content, graphic aspects, and presentation of material, product, or service. Determines size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy, selects style and size of type, and arranges layout based upon available space, knowledge of layout principles, and esthetic design concepts. Draws sample of finished layout. Ensures consistency of design. Prepares notes and instructions for workers who assemble and prepare final layouts for printing. Reviews final layout and suggests improvements as needed. May key information into computer equipment to create layouts for client or supervisor. May prepare illustrations or rough sketches of material according to instructions of client or supervisor. May prepare series of drawings to illustrate sequence and timing of story development for television production. May mark up, paste, and assemble final layouts to prepare layouts for printer. May specialize in particular field, medium, or type of layout. May produce still and animated graphic formats for on-air and taped portions of television news broadcasts, using electronic video equipment. May photograph layouts, using camera, to make layout prints for supervisor or client. May develop negatives and prints, using negative and print developing equipment, tools, and work aids to produce layout photographs for client or supervisor.

Requirements:

The Visual / Print Designer will focus on high-quality visual execution across print and static formats, with opportunities to contribute illustration and conceptual thinking. This role is ideal for a designer who values craft, clarity, and strong visual systems—particularly when working with dense or technical information.

Design print materials including posters, publications, reports, and signage
Create layouts that balance technical accuracy with visual clarity
Develop illustrations and visual assets to explain complex ideas
Apply strong typographic systems to support readability and hierarchy
Collaborate with writers and technical partners to refine content presentation
Prepare files for production with attention to detail and efficiency

Desired Skills

Strong portfolio demonstrating print design, typography, and layout
Illustration skills (conceptual, technical, or explanatory)
Deep understanding of visual hierarchy and communication
Experience working within brand or design systems
Production-ready mindset with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Highly skilled at using Adobe design software (InDesign, Illustrator, & Photoshop)
