Senior Vice President Mining Operations
Summary of Position:
The SVP Mining Operations (SVP Mining Ops) reports directly to the company’s Chief Executive Officer and serves as a member of the senior executive team. The SVP Mining Ops will play a key leadership role in overseeing and optimizing Navajo Transitional Energy Company’s (NTEC’s) existing operational activities. The SVP Mining Ops is accountable for ensuring that business strategies, production, and development targets are achieved as scheduled and within budgeted cost constraints. Key targets for accountability will be measured by metrics such as key safety indicators, full cost of operations, free cash flow generated from operations, tons and mcf produced, completion deadlines, and capital spending targets. The initial responsibilities will concentrate on the southern operations inclusive of the Navajo Mine, NTEC Helium, and Four Corners Plant Ownership, with a transition of full responsibility for overseeing the NTEC’s Powder River Basin’s active operations, Antelope Mine, Cordero Rojo Mine, and Spring Creek Mine.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Lead NTEC’s health, safety, and environmental programs ensuring appropriate resources, both financial and human, are devoted to these programs to allow them to be successful.
- Ensure that an effective safety culture is maintained at all operations with a goal of achieving a zero reportable incident rate.
- Collaborate with the CEO in setting and driving the organizational vision and operational strategy.
- Provide strategic direction and vision for the mining operations in alignment with the overall organizational objectives.
- Responsible and accountable for leadership, management, and growth of the company’s active operations.
- Ensure that professional, technical, and operating resources are efficiently and effectively allocated to enable the achievement of operational budget, production, safety, and development targets.
- Manage capital investment and expenses to ensure the company achieves targets relative to growth and profitability.
- Provide direction to and develop management teams into cohesive and effective work units to achieve common goals and establish and reinforce an environment of continuous operational improvement.
- Responsible for the development, direction, and outcome of business improvement programs in areas such as safety, operational productivity, plant and equipment maintenance, construction, mine planning, and cost management.
- Ensure the company’s values are implemented across the operations and all policies and procedures are consistent with the company’s policies, procedures, standards, and objectives.
- Monitor performance with tracking and data analytics to prepare detailed reports, both current and forecasting.
- Maintain and build trusted relationships with key customers, clients, partners, and stakeholders.
- Work as part of the executive team to develop key corporate growth strategies and directions.
- Ensure effective employee training and development plans in the areas of safety and leadership are implemented.
- Ensure that the operations comply with all applicable environmental, regulatory, permitting, and legal requirements.
- Work with the CFO and Finance/Accounting department and Technical Services to ensure that appropriate budgets, spending controls, and reports are developed, implemented, and maintained.
- Represent the Company externally to government agencies, suppliers, and the general public.
- Frequent travel required (about 40-50% of the time) to the company’s operations.
Necessary Qualifications:
Knowledge and Relevant Experience
- An undergraduate bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) from an accredited institution is required. Advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 20 years of progressive experience in a heavy industry, mining, or utilities company with demonstrated operational, financial, and external relationship experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing both preparation and execution of annual operational budget responsibilities in excess of $125 million and capital budgets in excess of $25 million.
- In-depth understanding of accounting principles including budgeting, balance sheets, income statements, cash flow, and capital planning management.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of corporate management, administration, and organization.
- Direct management responsibility over salaried staff and hourly workforce employees.
- Demonstrated experience cultivating positive company culture and proactive employee health and safety programs.
- Demonstrated experience facilitating employee training and development programs.
- Proven experience in senior leadership positions at multiple sites.
- Strategic visionary with sound professional skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and strong operational focus.

- Proven history of creating positive working relationships with mining equipment OEMs and their dealerships as well as support service organizations for heavy mining equipment.
- Excellent negotiator who is experienced in contracts, government regulations, and oversight.
- Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
- Experience managing relationships with local, state, and national elected leadership.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to frequently sit with frequent forward bending and occasional rotation. The employee must rarely lift, carry and/or move up to 13 pounds and rarely lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee is required to rarely push or pull up to 45 pounds horizontally. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required occasionally to walk; climb stairs; and stand with rare rotation. Rarely the employee is required to squat repetitively or reach up to 74”. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. At times the role will require significant travel throughout the United States and possibly other international locations is required, in addition to regular travel to the company’s operations. This job will require long workdays.
Working Environment: Works in an office environment. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
