Position: Director of Academic Services
Hours: Typical Work Day: 10:30 AM – 7:00 PM
- 3-5 hours of social media and phone outreach every week (outside of work day hours)
- Some weekend work will be required throughout the year (Typically during College
- Application, Financial Aid, and Test Preparation Programming season and annual
- NAC Graduation and Thanksgiving events)
- Travel to college locations during Fall and Spring, potential in- and out-of-state travel, including weekend trips
- Hour shifts - During summer and winter breaks, the organization will potentially shift their hours to an earlier time frame and may potentially have some work from home days to accommodate the needs of the organization.
Status: Full-Time, Salary, Exempt Position
Compensation/Benefits:

Requirements:
- Masters Degree highly desirable
- Majors in Social Services, Human Services, Education, Psychology preferred
- CPR Certified

DESCRIPTION
As a member of the Nicholas Academic Center Management Team, the Director of Academic Services (DAS) is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing an education program and services that support and strengthen students’ (8th-12th grade) academic achievement and higher education eligibility. The DAS provides individualized academic case management services to all underclassmen who attend their Nicholas Academic Centers (NAC) site. This position manages a team of 5-7 members who help the Director accomplish departmental and organizational goals. The DAS position supports the implementation of NAC summer programming at their site, working in tandem with other Directors of Academic Services and other NAC Directors to provide comprehensive learning opportunities. The DAS creates and maintains relationships with school, local, and national stakeholders. This position acts as a mentor to current students and alumni who have graduated from the program, providing them with in-person mentoring services throughout the time they remain active participants of the program. The DAS does some travel 4 to 6 times a year; they visit alumni enrolled in university (in/out-of-state) to aid with students’ transition and retention in college. The DAS works with the Executive Director, the Director of Operations, the Director of Programs and NAC management team to assess students’ academic progress and needs, and to develop programs and services accordingly.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
ADMINISTRATIVE/OPERATIONS
●Conceptualize and manage the creation and implementation of all Academic Services
Programming.
●Oversee student attendance and progress in the data system. Provide staff with training
as needed.
●Manages the implementation of NAC’s calendar of tutoring services and other academic
support activities.
●Participate and actively lead in NAC management team and staff meetings
●Prepare reports, briefs or other data as needed.
●Create, maintain and manage an auditable record of:
- Student participants including current school, home, and parent information
- Student attendance and behavior
- Students’ academic progress
- Students on NAC academic probation, including remediation action plan
- Student participation in NAC’s extracurricular activities
- Student participation in Test Preparation program
- Outcomes of academic programming
- Outreach to school, local and national stakeholders
- Programmatic planning

provides opportunities for staff to collaborate with others, creates opportunities for
professional growth).

counterparts across all centers.

whole Academics Department across all centers.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION
- Provide educational case management services to Nicholas Academic Centers students (8th-12th grade)
- Oversee and track NAC student attendance and transportation
- Conceptualize, develop and implement year-round academic programming that focuses on improving students’ academic skills, social skills, cultural capital, academic knowledge, and leadership skills to name a few.
- Track student attendance and progress using an internal data system (Bonterra Apricot).
- Develop, implement, and measure outcomes of effective academic support programs that includes tutoring services and academic advising.
- Oversee student intake and assessment process to determine eligibility and other NAC participation requirements including student data tracking.
- Develop orientation activities for new and returning NAC participants in collaboration with NAC Directors.
- Advice and counsel students on academic subject requirements, classes for graduation, and college eligibility.
- Maintain positive working relationships with school counselors and teachers to identify and provide instructional intervention and other academic strategies that increase academic achievement and facilitate success.
- Communicate with parents as is needed to address students’ academic needs, concerns and successes
- Collaborate with other Directors and Managers to create, manage, and NAC summer programs.
- Collaborate with other Directors and Managers to create policies regarding NAC programs and services year round.
- Collaborate with other Directors and Managers to plan, create, manage and implement student programming (i.e.: College Spheres, winter, spring and summer programming).
- Maintain consistent and effective communication with the NAC management team, teachers, staff and administrators to advocate for students.
- Coordinate academic enrichment activities including guest speakers, workshops, and other presentations to inform, guide, and inspire students.
- Develop and implement Test Preparation services and maintain student data, and monitor effectiveness.
- Provide students with support and resources that sustain motivation, help develop good study/academic skills, and engender positive attitudes and high expectations.
- Attend and participate in community events, identifying stakeholders and resources that will provide services to students within center
- Create curriculum for year-round academic programming related to cultural and global issues
- Directs and conceptualizes programming to encourage students to apply and participate
- in summer opportunities/pre college programs, classes, fieldtrips, and other enrichment programs.
- Oversee vendor partnership with Test Preparation provider: overseeing finances, enrollment and continued participation.
- Support alumni services outreach, communicating with alumni and traveling to college sites to support college retention and graduation.
- Travel to college locations within and outside of California about 4-6 times a year
- Collaborate with the Director of Programs (DP) to develop, oversee, and execute stakeholder MOUs and partnership agreements.

MENTORING AND ADVOCACY
- Mentor and guide students as they face barriers in their personal life, education, family and general environment
- Provide emotional and advocacy support to students’ parents
- Work with colleagues, using a holistic approach, to help resolve students’ emotional and academic barriers
- Travel to college locations to visit alumni, offering mentoring and advocacy
MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Academic Services Managers
- Hire, train, supervise and evaluate Academic Test Prep Instructor
- Hire, train, supervise and evaluate Officer Coordinators and NAC Driver
- Manage the hiring process of NAC Academic Mentors
- Train Academic Service Managers, Office Coordinators and NAC Driver to ensure they implement NAC Academic Services to the best of their abilities
- Help Academic Services Managers to ensure they train their Academic Mentors to implement NAC Academic Services to the best of their abilities.
- Provide management support to Academic Services Managers to help them succeed in their role of managing Academic Mentors
- Collaborates with Admin Team in overseeing NAC Academic volunteers
- Manages mentors and guides the growth of all direct and indirect employees within the
- Academic Services Department.
BUDGET/FISCAL
- Monitor Academic Services program and personnel expenses.
- Monitor interdepartmental program and operational (P & O) expenses.
- Assist Executive Admin Team with developing budget for Academic programs and general operations.
OTHER
- Perform other duties as assigned and/or needed to meet operation and program goals.
- Maintain current and knowledgeable on trends, policies, and issues relevant to youth development programming, K-12 education, and college access program development
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Characteristics
- Knowledge of education/youth development program planning and implementation.
- Knowledge of high school courses and graduation requirements and academic counseling.
- Knowledge and sensitivity to the education and academic needs of a diverse urban student population.
- Communication skills with an ability to establish and maintain positive interpersonal/human relations with diverse and multiple stakeholders including students, parents, peers and high school personnel.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical conduct.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to establish priorities.
- Knowledge of computer applications and software, i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google.
- Bilingual Skills: Ability to speak and communicate in Spanish.
Pay: $78,500.00 - $80,000.00 per year
