Starting in the position at 1199 SEIU Training and Employment Funds, I quickly realized that the onboarding and training process was severely lacking. In most professional environments, you're given at least a structured two-week training period, or at minimum, the opportunity to shadow someone experienced to understand the workflow. That was not the case here. The training was minimal at best, and I was expected to perform complex tasks without the foundational knowledge or support typically afforded to new hires. It felt like being thrown into the deep end without a life vest.

There was also an unrealistic expectation that I should immediately know everything about the role, even though it was new to me. Additionally, being one of the few men in a department largely overseen and managed by women, I couldn’t help but notice a sense of bias and unequal treatment. Whether intentional or not, it created a working environment where I felt scrutinized rather than supported.

One particular experience stands out: during one of my first major assignments—acting as a liaison to help students obtain their certifications—I was not only underprepared due to a lack of training but also openly set up to fail. It was clear from the tone and actions of several colleagues and supervisors that I was being watched with the hope of making a mistake. When I made a decision that was correct but not aligned with their expectations, I was publicly embarrassed and unfairly reprimanded.

They also expect you to know everything in every position; something that has to do with their new "Matrix" policy, where they will put you in different areas regardless of whether you know that other departments work ethic.

While there were some genuinely good people in the organization and moments of camaraderie, those were the exception rather than the norm. The overall culture often felt dominated by favoritism, inconsistent standards, and a lack of constructive support. Like many workplaces, it has potential, but some serious internal dynamics and practices need to be addressed and improved.

No day is ever the same day at 1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Funds (the “Fund”). I arrive to work 20 – 30 minutes early to check my voicemail and respond to emails received after hours. It is important for me to plan and organize my day and work week in order to be productive and effective. I do so by establishing a priority list to accomplish. Although some task may be more important than others, I make every attempt to complete all task before the end of the work day and week.

Working for such a diverse prominent healthcare organization, I learned to work with different ethnic backgrounds. The Fund employs many different ethnicities to better service there members. Having co-workers from all over the world helps me understand their culture, work ethics, and communicate more effectively.

I learned most of my transferable skills through my current employment at the Fund. I’ve become more proficient in researching, planning, organizing, analyzing, and problem solving. Through the guidance and direction of effective management and leadership, I’m motivated to enhanced my skills and take on greater challenges. There are times I am faced with challenges, which can be the hardest part of my job because of limited resources. I may not have all the tools needed to complete the job, therefore, have to rely on business units. This can delay the turnaround time to complete the task. At the same time, this gives me the opportunity to network and build professional relationships. I enjoy meeting and working with new people and groups. It opens the door to career advancement and future endeavors.

A typical day began at 9am. 1199 provides health insurance to individuals who work in the home healthcare field. I answered calls from clients who had questions regarding their benefits or those who needed to apply for coverage. Most often I received calls from persons who were having difficulty with their doctors billing or having prescriptions filled.

In this environment is where I learned that going above and beyond on behalf of a client is truly worth the effort. This is also where I learned the benefits of having excellent verbal and written communication skills. These skills earned me the respect of the other professionals with whom I had to work, they were more apt to cooperate with my requests on behalf of our clients.

The hardest part of the job were those few times that I actually could not fill a clients request. These were circumstances when their medical coverage was truly insufficient or when they had not worked enough hours in the month in order to maintain their insurance.

The most enjoyable part of my job was conflict resolution on behalf of our clients. I also enjoyed the fact that it was not an overly stressful environment and my co workers were mostly pleasant to work with and they helped me learn the nature of the business.

This is by far one of the worst companies I have worked.  The leadership is non active and decisions are based on favorites not in line with the  employment laws.  Forget abut the so called Employee Handbook as it is just there for use in terminating employees.  The Directors are not qualified to be in positions.   if you disagree with their behaviour, very cut throat and quick to admit it.  
Promotions are based on last name and who you know, or whose daughter is married to whose son, nephew or niece.  If you share the same ethnicity, then you are likely to advance and be promoted even though you lack the experience or management skills.
Those employees who have worked over 20 years are unable to comprehend the needs for change and innovation.  Instead it is a constant " this is how it has been done" even though the numbers prove that it no longer works.
Bad employees are coddled while good employees have to either suffer the consequences or leave.  Upper level management and HR actually prefer to not address the issues as it takes too much effort to resolve.  If you leave they are likely very happy regardless of what you have done to improve working conditions.

The workplace culture is bad.

I've been with the company for nearly four years, and while I do see the potential for it to be a truly great place to work, that potential remains largely unrealized. One of the most difficult aspects is the culture of favoritism—it often feels less like a professional environment and more like a high school clique. If you're "in," things may go smoothly for you; if you're not, it can be a very isolating experience.

The compensation doesn’t quite match the workload or expectations, and you definitely need thick skin to thrive here. Dealing with verbal abuse from some members while genuinely trying to help can be emotionally draining. Unfortunately, there isn’t strong support from management when it comes to these issues.

As a male employee, I’ve also noticed a lack of balance in leadership. This is a very women-forward organization, which is great in many respects, but at times it can feel like male voices are sidelined. There are very few men in management, and it sometimes seems as if that’s by design.

Overall, this workplace has promise, but serious cultural and structural changes are needed to make it a more inclusive, respectful, and truly professional environment.

The call center is very draining, monotonous, and stressful. They do not hire enough people, and the people they do hire don't make it past probation.  You can rarely get a day off approved because they're so understaffed. The call volume is extremely high and you're constantly being verbally abused by either members or providers. They hold you to ridiculous standards that the department itself never meets. They sweep everything under the rug. Management puts on this façade as if they "care" and "appreciate" you but at the end of the day, you're nothing but a number. There is no room for personal growth or advancement. They put out 3-4 internal openings out a week. You have to take tests to be qualified for these postings, but the picking goes by seniority. Within a year, you feel tired, drained, overworked, and underappreciated.  Some coworkers are like family and the rest are like high school students that gossip constantly. The only pro to this job are the benefits.

The work work environment at 1199 SEIU is similar to other work offices. Deadlines are always being thrown your way which makes the day go by extremely fast. Based on where you work you can get to know a good group of people who are more than willing to help you complete your various assignments. The culture is somewhat mixed as there are individuals who are more willing to accept changes and some who are not. You will get to practice your computer skills on a high level, whether it is on a web based application, or excel. The hardest part about the job would have to be the unrealistic deadlines. Unfortunately it is part of the job and you are required to complete the task. The most enjoyable part of the day are the people you work with.

I absolutely loved working here. I had pride in the work I did. I got along with all my coworkers and other departments. During the pandemic, we were able to work from home. We were given a number of workflows a day. And if you were able to finish early you had the choice of asking for more work or just relax until you receive an email for urgent member request. My supervisor actually knew the programs and always helped me. Which in my past jobs the supervisors were clueless in the programs, and you were on your own. My compliant was with the union. You think that the union is there to help you but that was never the case for me. When I needed them the most, they ignored me and never addressed my situation. They are completely useless. 

The worst.  Job postings are merely formalities, and a waste of time.  Mgmt already knows who will be hired for the position but will still waste people's time interviewing them. Human Resources does very little to help an employee. Remote work only offered at their convenience.  If you want to work fully remote because you are more productive at home/sick/ mental illness or whatever  they will not approve it even if it's against the law to deny certain accommodations. It is only offered biweekly and at their convenience. If you are unable to make it in the office because of bad weather/emergencies etc the option to work remotely will be denied if it is your week to be in the office.  It is only at their convenience even if you prove to be more productive at home they do not care.  They love to micromanage and have extreme antiquated ideas.  Remote work only offered now due to pandemic and smaller location, not because they are keeping up with the world of technology.  

Its a normal busy day at work, Working as a phone Rep in the call center for the pension dept in my company  has taught me to be more sensitive and have so much empathy, knowledge. The connection with management has been great experience in making sure we as a team interact and learn from our mistakes to be a better Customer Service Expert. Working with Co-workers is a learning experience in getting to interact with different nationalities, and working together as a team and have respect for one another. The hardest Part of my job was to multi task and navigate quickly effectively different software applications to better assist our customers. The most enjoyable part of my job is interacting with customers and making sure i have provided to them the highest quality Customer Service.
