A Path of Care

When I interviewed at Sooner, I thought I had landed my dream job. The duties described and the pay discussed seemed more than generous. Little did I know I would work far more hours than originally agreed upon, including weekends and major holidays. The office staff gets to take off after 5:00PM and have holidays off, but field clinicians have to work until their day is done. An average day consists of seeing about 7-10 patients, but factor in the fact you will drive more than 100 miles in a typical day, and that’s a tall order!  I was offered a company car, but I still have not received it. I’ve been here almost 2 years now, and I’ve seen many people come and go. My guess is that the turnover is high because of the large territories we cover. Other offices have staffing issues too, and we are made to cover them, which means longer work days. Many of our patients have very complex medical needs, and the charting is honestly horrendous. RNs are expected to manage about 50 people or so, which is very difficult, even though we try to work as a team. It feels nearly impossible to manage at work if someone on the team happens to be gone on vacation. Our workload increases even more as we must pick up the slack.  Fortunately, I do not have kids at home, but if I did, I’m not sure how I would be able to continue with the high demands placed on me each day. The morale here tends to be very low. There are a few good people, but even they seem burned out. More staff and smaller territories could make the job more bearable. As employees, we are asked to spread the word that Sooner is a 5 star agency and a great place to work, but I cannot say that in good faith. I am currently seeking another job due to the wear and tear on my personal vehicle and I am in need of better, more affordable insurance. I also can’t take being on call over 20 days a month and the constant picking up the slack when people call in, quit, or go on vacation. This place is a hot mess most days, and leadership are not helpful with covering nurse visits. Instead of covering a nurse during absence, those visits get pushed to later in the week, making the nurse who was out on PTO have to work the same amount of hours as if they hadn’t taken a day off. Staff get punished for taking time off, which is not ok. That never seemed fair to me, and it’s another reason I am submitting my 2 weeks notice at my earliest convenience. 

The management doesn't appreciate the employees. The office staff bad mouth employees as soon as they leave the room.  I felt very micromanaged! You are just another number and a robotic fixture to complete a task. The insurance isn't the greatest. The turnover rate is high. (That should tell you something!) Hours worked are endless! You can drive hundreds of miles per day, see 8-10 patients, and still be expected to get your charting done before the next day for a “bonus”. By the time you factor what you make with all hours spent working, you may as well choose a minimum wage job. The more I did, the more I was asked to do. I wouldn’t recommend working here to my worst enemy. I had discrepancies constantly with my paycheck and mileage. Oh, and I was on call almost constantly. It didn’t matter if I worked all night the night before due to after hours calls, I was still expected to work the next day. Loved working with patients in their home setting, but the bad most certainly outweighed the good at Sooner. No thanks! 

Management does not support direct care staff. They are focused on numbers. Lots of overtime and little incentive to complete extra work due to fixed salary yielding low hourly pay rate and poor work life balance.  Lots of gossip and backstabbing. Harsh office culture. High turnover rate. Training is lacking. Expected to cover large territories and work many holidays. Frequent on call rotation. Difficult to leave work at work because patients get your phone number. Management will not assist in the field. They do not care if you have a large workload. You are expected to see all of your patients and complete documentation within 24 hours, preferably on the same work day, but with all the drive time this is rarely possible. If you disagree with the director, you will get fired. If you stand up for yourself, you will get fired. You are constantly reminded that you as an employee are replaceable. 

Long hours. Excessive turnover. Constantly expected to pick up the slack and cover broader territories or see more patients when someone calls in or takes leave. Heavy on call rotation. Poor drive time/mileage reimbursement. Most times profits seem more important than people. People who question methods are mysteriously let go for petty reasons. Management is good at smoothing things over with their words, but rarely, if ever, take  action to solve problems. Managers are conflict avoiders and lack ability to solve problems that could address clinical or billing issues. For the most part, my coworkers have been decent. Lots of teamwork demonstrated as we continue working hard to cover more than our fair share of the pie. It seems like we’ve been short-staffed since I started. Stressful work environment most days. I can’t recommend my family or friends to work here.

There is a very high turnover here. There seems to nearly always be a staffing emergency or shortage. I’ve been asked to cover broader territories and see more patients than I felt could be managed safely for one nurse. I’ve been made to work tons of overtime with no extra compensation because patient care comes first and the extensive documentation that is to follow must be done on your own time at home. Want to enjoy vacations without your phone ringing constantly or holidays with your family? This may not be the job for you. My advice would be to set very clear and firm boundaries. The kicker is those who seem to set boundaries or stand up for themselves are terminated. Sort of a catch 22. The more you do, the more that is asked of you to do. I never felt appreciated here. I would not recommend to  friend as an employer. 

Working for a company that stands behind its beliefs and exceeds all of your expectations is unreal! The management is so uplifting and goes above and beyond to make sure you’re doing good and not just in work life. They care about your well-being. Not many companies that are willing to help with gas or feeding your family. The mileage pay is higher than any company I’ve ever worked for. The pay per visit is great! You can always call other employees or managers with any questions or concerns. The training was above and beyond. You are never thrown to the wolves and left to fend for yourself. Anyone you need is just a call, email, or text away. There is always an admin on call for anything you need. You have a service area and really get to know your patients and their families. This place is such a blessing! The other staff are great and everyone is so friendly! I can’t say enough good things!

They talk about team work, patient care, and being a positive enviroment. However certain office staff talk bad about nurses/patients when they aren't there to defend themselves, i found this very disheartening. The DON wad very sweet and seemed to care about her staff and patients. Most of the training field nurses I met were amazing and truly did great work. The will try to over schedule you if you don't make clear boundaries. (Of course if you do make boundaries the office staff will talk about you) . Overall, I had a bad feeling about this company, but couldn't place it. Seen multiple things that just didn't feel right. Be very cautious. Huge turnover rate. When I was hired I asked why such a huge turnover rate, they blamed it on the nurses.. after I been then a few months I noticed 4 (including me) quit quickly. The three before me, when they quit I was told "if they contact you dont answer or talk to them" which I thought was strange. Just very off putting 

My training was a mess. My preceptor barely had time to show me the ropes because they were so busy. I did not  feel prepared or safe to do my job. I was told to watch YouTube videos to learn nursing skills like catheters or how to give care to wounds. The higher ups  were more concerned about getting more referrals and opening new offices and less concerned about helping staff learn. The pay wasn’t great. They don’t pay for drive time. I spent a lot of time on the road. I told my concerns to the supervisor, and they told me to see the patients to get experience. I didn’t feel supported or welcomed and there was alot of office drama. In the end it was not for me. 

This company continues to be a leader when it comes to the way employees are treated, compensated, appreciated, and cared for. The ownership and management continually put employees over profit and do their best to ensure that employees have the tools they need to be productive and happy. They have been a leader in the community through the pandemic and have gone above and beyond to keep the staff and patients safe throughout the crisis. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work for a company that cares for it's employees at the level Sooner does. 

Phenomenal workplace! 100% focused on giving patients the best care. Management supports staff and hard work does not go unnoticed. Staff is given the resources and equipment to be successful. Management is supportive and family oriented. The company has bonuses as incentives for completing charting in a timely manner. Flexible scheduling so I am able to balance life with kids, school and work. I couldn’t have picked a better company to become a part of. Staff has become like family!
