What is the best part of working at the company?
I connected well with the staff of my school, and I found a lot of support from school staff and the therapist that I worked with in my school. There were moments of good conversation with my team members, and I felt supported by my team lead to an extent.
It was easy to work with students due to them trusting me, and I experienced general cooperation from parents and students alike.
Curriculum and materials were reimbursed or bought by filling out order forms. Mileage reimbursement was 0.07 to the gallon which was not too bad.
Benefits are decent.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I would ask my team lead for support and she would promise it but consistently did not deliver. I asked her to come to my school for in-person support and when the week came, I did not see the team lead OR receive an acknowledgement of being stood up. The lack of support is directly related to why I no longer work here.
I experienced two mergers in my 3.5 years of employment, and there was little to no information every time we were informed which created a lot of job anxiety.
My team lead did not advocate for me to school staff when I requested assistance, and was only attentive via messaging or with select team members.
Inconsistent communication but many emails a day made it difficult to know what was important versus spam. 
Upper staff would say they are there to assist but consistently did not deliver either.
Training was minimal, and a lot of knowledge came from other providers helping rather than supervisors, team leaders, and training.
Often felt ignored or disregarded by team lead due to a lack of trust in my ability to provide meaningful services.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment and culture when I was in my school was not great but not horrible. I had good days and bad, but if I did have a bad day, I was able to confide in school staff or the therapist I worked with.
School felt cliquey sometimes, however it is difficult to not group up when the scheduling was as it is.


The A&C offices were quiet and sterile. Upper management did not engage with myself unless we did something or wrong or were being informed of company changes. Communication was encouraged but it did not feel genuine.

Adult and Child is a very mission driven organization that is passionate about providing services to its clients. The agency is also passionate about becoming better and stronger as an agency. While initiatives and policies can always be improved, Adult and Child is always trying to further the employee work/life balance and has recently implemented a formal flexible work option. Many reviews talk about service delivery/productivity expectations - Adult and Child has put the effort in to make sure that employee expectations are not out of the norm as compared to other community mental health centers. In many instances, the productivity expectation is better at Adult and Child, as staff are not penalized on their productivity when they take a day off as they are with other centers. Ultimately, productivity and billing do have to occur to keep the doors open so that clients can continue to receive the great services that Adult and Child provides. Also, many reviews talk about lack of availability for career growth if the person does not have a Master's Degree. This has definitely been true in the past and to some degree currently. But this is another area that Adult and Child is working on. Adult and Child is currently implementing processes where staff can earn raises and career advancement without needing to obtain a Master's Degree if they do not want to. Things that Adult and Child can continue to work on include additional Wellness programs, rewards (there are already some in place, and they are working on more, but it could still be better), and more continuity in staff transitions. At this time, I consider Adult and Child to likely be my "forever" employer home and continually look forward to growing with the company and making it better!

Be careful if you choose to work here.  You must be a drone and assimilate (like the Borg) or risk termination. Overly-sensitive employees exist at all position of the organization.  They claim to be inclusive but anyone who offers perspectives to consider that differ from what the company wants to to believe are quickly terminated. They claim to encourage employees to speak up about the types of people that might be a trigger for you, but it is a bad idea to say anything to this prompt. They pretend like they care about everyone, but act more like an exclusive country club where only certain types of people "fit in".

The IT area has several toxic people who trample over others and fail to focus on the meaningful work.  It is  an absolute joke because they do not plan much or thoroughly test changes that might impact the organization and suggestions to improve are ignored. There is a distinct lack of meaningful training and mistakes of any kind are not tolerated after your 90 days.

When I started working at A&C, I thought it was going to be the most amazing place to work. I was excited because one of the things I saw before interviewing was a pin with a pride flag that allowed you to "check" your preferred pronouns. It was after the 2-3 weeks of training that I began to realize what I'd gotten myself into. You're expected to meet productivity every week no matter what barriers (client's cancelling, non-billable duties, meetings, etc.) may have set you back. There's no room for advancement, and I just received my first raise after working there for 14 months. The caseload is nice, I have about 22-25 clients; the clients deal with all sorts of barriers such as homelessness, trauma, mental illnesses, transportation, finances, etc. Last year around this time, they changed a lot with helping positions and this ultimately forced skills people to take on a larger workload while getting the same rate of pay. A&C claims to care most about clients and employees but neither is true; all they care about is money.

My direct manager was great, the people I worked with were great but the organization is awful. The clinics are pitted against each other, different departments in the same clinic are pitted against each other, no one trusts anyone if they don’t work with them all the time because whoever yells the loudest gets their way. One of my managers was fantastic, proactive, helpful. Another would reply all to emails of people asking questions and he would chew them out without answering their questions all the time. Never worked some place where that guy gets promoted except for there. The only department that’s actually fully staffed is management, everyone else who was actually doing the work was overworked and under appreciated. I honestly felt bad leaving but I also couldn’t continue to work for such an unprofessional company. The CEO might be great, he honestly made me proud and excited to work there the first few months of attending all staff meetings but the place he was talking about was fictIonal, I learned pretty quickly. 

Working for this agency has been enlightening to me and has helped me to better understand the limitations and parameters within mental health as a result of government policies. Although there are a variety of positions that one can work  within the agency having only a Bachelor's degree, there is no real opportunity for advancement within the company unless one receives a Master's degree or higher. There is a lot of emphasis on paperwork and documentation, which can interfere in the amount of time a provider is able to spend with clients. Even though these job requirements seem daunting, the time with clients and helping them to gain skills to be successful and to have meaningful lives is highly rewarding. Each day brings new challenges and surprises. In my position, work hours are semi-flexible to meet the needs of client's and their families.

I have worked at this agency for some years, more than a handful of years. I have been in tons of positions. The supervisors do not have say anymore, and the directors micromanage everything right now. The directors are so far removed from real clinical judgments and situations, that it makes situations very stressful. Very negative culture with productivity and notes. I adored my colleagues completely and I worked with some of the best individuals in the field. Adult and Child has changed over the past few years and not for the better, they are in tons of debt. Workers have not seen a pay raise in yeas, and our CEO admitted that if you have more experience than you would make more money at another mental health company. Adult and Child needs to change its protocols.

The administration appears to prefer quanity over quality. Productivity expectations are outrageous. It appears they would prefer providers to ensure they "hit" their quota for the week rather than provide quality services for the clients. Turnover rates are very high within all departments, and instead of keeping the position open for a qualified individual, administrators will higher someone who is not competent in order to ensure they fill the position as soon as possible to keep the money flow coming. For example, when I was a school based therapist, they hired someone with no mental health background to provide skills development to children; this individual had a business degree. They promote doing what's best for clients, but as a former therapist, this is not the case at all. I would not remember working here if you want to actually help clients improve.

I have never worked for a better agency. A&C capitalizes on your strengths as an employee and allows you the freedom to make decisions based upon your level of comfort, knowledge, and expertise. There are plenty of opportunities for advancement. Hard work does not go unrecognized. Management is friendly and not afraid to jump in when you need help. There are a lot of really experienced clinicians at Adult&Child who are open to providing guidance. Supervision is  provided and of high quality. I took a bit of a pay cut coming to A&C, but you can't put a price tag on an agency that cares about your wellbeing and understands the challenges of being a working parent. 

How satisfied you'll be working at A&C really depends on the kind of role you have. I had a pretty unique role that I was generally happy in, but I can tell you that some lower level social work roles in the company are very demanding and stressful for not enough pay. The company, at least when I left, was going through major financial issues and couldn't afford to give any raises and was cutting costs and benefits left and right. They're trying so hard to make primary care work right now, but it's bleeding them dry and every other department is suffering for it. But most individuals there are wonderful, caring people who love to collaborate, innovate, and help others. Basically, because there are so many in it for the clients, who just want to give all they can to those suffering, they'll put up with some crummy management to do that.
