I could write a book on how awful my experience was here. I worked in behavioral health as a psych tech and everything was so disorganized, all the rules and expectations were inconsistent. The last thing you want is inconsistency in a psychiatric inpatient facility. It made the patients mad which in turn was stressful and unsafe for staff. Speaking of unsafe, nurses were afraid to call codes because they would get yelled at if they did. Units of 4 staff were expected to “handle” a combative patient on their own. So you’ve got all staff on a code and no one watching the other patients who must be monitored. And so many people would get injured because no one knew how to handle codes. Management didn’t care if you got injured. Managers expectations of staff were inconsistent ... definite favoritism based on who could work the most overtime aka sleep on the job the most and do absolutely nothing to help on the floor. Unsafe behaviors were used such as certain staff letting patients keep clothing with strings, pens, and letting them shave with a razor without supervision — again management hardly cared.  Staff are extremely rude to each other and yelling at people to get your way is the norm there; whereas courteous and sensible people were treated poorly and disrespected. Staffing was so low — we would have 4 staff for 20 patients at times which meant two nurses sat behind the nurses station non existent on the floor while two the techs had to hope it would be a calm shift. Nurses barely knew their patients because they were never on the floor to talk to anyone. What a joke. I could go on and on. The only thing that was ok was compensation and benefits and flexibility with pto/call outs. I don’t even know how this place is still allowed to be functioning. It is so unsafe to work there. There is no Seclusion room on some units, forcing staff to remain hands on until a violent patient calms down and constantly risking harm to the patient and staff. No sense at all. Also when COVID began, behavioral health had no intention of making it a requirement for all staff to wear masks, putting everyone at risk because they were too ignorant and careless. Oh and don’t forget staff who make sexist/gender biased and other culturally insensitive remarks not only to their coworkers but in front of patients. Management still never took that seriously though either. This place is a literal joke and the absolute worst place I have ever worked in my life.

One of the best parts of working at that company was the strong relationships I had with my colleagues. We supported each other, communicated well, and worked together effectively as a team. That positive environment made even challenging tasks more manageable and enjoyable.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part about working at the company was the high volume of patients and the challenging situations we often faced as patient care technicians. It required staying calm under pressure, managing time efficiently, and providing quality care despite the workload. However, it also taught me resilience and strengthened my ability to work in fast-paced environments.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The organization has a formal structure, yet the work environment is lively and collaborative. Employees are expected to maintain professionalism, but teamwork and open communication are strongly encouraged.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day at the company is a great balance of productivity and collaboration. We start our day focused, with team check-ins or planning, and then get into our tasks—whether that's problem-solving, creative work, or supporting patients. There’s always a sense of teamwork, and people are willing to help each other out, which makes even the busiest days feel manageable.
When we celebrate holidays like Christmas and Easter, it's really special. The company brings everyone together, often with decorations, shared meals, or small parties. We take the time to appreciate one another, exchange gifts or cards, and enjoy some fun activities. It’s not just about the work here, it’s about the people, and we genuinely have a good time together during those moments.

It is wonderful working where race is not an issue because each worker feels fit in and have the same goal. 
   Last Monday was a the most pleasant day I ever experienced.  During my rounding,one nurse's client was in respiratory distress, but at that point of time she was busy with another critical client who had nearly the same health issue.  Being the PCT and new RN grad, I used my critical thinking by first raising the head of the bed for lung expansion and easy breathing, took a risk because of necessity to put him on 1L oxygen then notified my nurse and charge nurse. in less than five seconds all other nurses have taken over the primary nurse for the client safety and well being. 
   It is very important to work as a team because this scenario shows  the attitude we should have at work having the same goal.
The charge nurse took the right step and all co-workers followed. I believed this is due to the spirit of collaboration, humbleness and dialogue she has cultivated with her subordinates.
  Co-workers cooperation and participation were effective because of the spirit of togetherness, compassion and need to help that through faith an organization like SGAH has developed in each of us.
   As I always say , if we could have more workers, experience nurses who are willing to train many new grad nurses, and make sure  they are not left on their own until they feel comfortable and demonstrate  safe care delivery, our clients will be well taken care off and on time.Therefore, it is an emergency to increase the nurses capacity in this organization.
  Faith based, team work, respect of each other,the multicultural and freedom of speech spirit the organization demonstrates make me enjoy my job.

This company is excellent at making false promises and dragging you along. Upper management does not listen to their employees. Chronically understaffed. Coworkers who quit are never replaced, their work is just delegated. Repeated examples of adding responsibility without adding any financial compensation. Stretching employees so thin it borders on abuse all while maintaining the facade of a "religious" organization based upon compassion. Their mission is to "extend god's care" but the upper management is a perfect example of a lack of care and compassion. IF you do not have a degree you are looked down upon, belittled, and treated like a second class citizen. There are no opportunities for advancement. Just be weary... If you do decide to go with this employer, stay sharp and don't be fooled by a lot of promises and shiny possibilities... make sure you ask them to clearly (in writing) define your role and what responsibilities you will have. That way you will have some sort of documentation because they WILL try to change your job after you're settled in. (For example: if they offer you a position at a certain office location, clarify wether or not you will be expected to travel and work at other sites or just that one. They are notorious for hiring people for one location, then when their 90 day probation period is over, requiring them to become a floating position to help cover other locations and will insist that that was a part of the position the entire time). 

I worked their for a couple of years as a pharmacy technician.  The staff that you work with became family eventually.  The nurses can aggressive and angry most of the time because they are over worked and don't have hardly any help.  It's wise to just say as little as possible and do you work and not stress over the pharmacy and nursing staff politics. A typical day depends on your schedule, one day you are working IV 11am-8pm, the next day could be 8:30 am to 4pm as a pyxis technician.  You have to wear many hats working there and be flexible with your schedule. The learning experience with working at a hospital setting was excellent because you have the opportunity to grow and learn so many different things. The job is not stable, they are looking to build a new hospital and lay people off the regular once they decided to build the new hospital, nurse, pharmacist, technician, janitor, you name it , they'd laid it off.  So be careful, complete your certifications in a timely manner and stay away form pharmacy politics.  Do your work and go home is my best advice.  People gossip and what you say would be on the fox 5 news so keep your thoughts to yourself involving the staff and management. This place is a business first.  There is no such thing as the patient comes first. This is with any establishment.

I work with hundreds of referrals obtain authorizations, affording to the necessary referral office.  Every day I learn something new, either about a new insurance requirement, or new technology coming into our field.

I'm fortunate, the team that I work with are all very good at their jobs, very smart people, very good to patients, very willing to keep going the extra mile. 

I think the hardest part about this job. Is it you work here for the people and for your  colleagues, but management does not see our worth by promoting within. Sure they interview,  but hiring is a different story.

 Our office was supposed to be getting raises. And some people did, and some people didn't. They did not honor my entire raise that i was to be given, but would not give me an answer as to why. 

This company, also, does not provide any extra compensation for people who speak other languages  used daily in this office. Not to mention, our healthcare insurance is only accepted within the Adventist healthcare network, and there are not many Adventist Healthcare clinics/ care network offices in this area. Leaving me with a higher out of pocket. I have to pay for many of my own doctors, appointments and medications.

Everyone gossips, You work with folks that are not the most welcoming staff to work with. Lazy Supervisor, she walked in late everyday so you were left alone trying to figure things out. I had to wait nine months before finally having manager order my uniform. Instability day to day since you never know where you will be placed. There were other staff members who felt the way I did but were afraid the Hospital Administration would retaliate.

All the administration cared about was getting their money from the patients even if you had 2 weeks left to live. I was sent to collect from a dying cancer patient with weeks to live. No one cared because Administration kept sending me to the same person until I just could not take it anymore. That's nothing I could go on and on. 

God forbid you want to move up cause they hang you instead!
You get written up just for not charging patients a measly $4. for records. It's too bad cause I accepted the job with high expectations for myself.

I would never recommend this place to anyone!

I have been supported by warm collegial fellow nurses and coworkers as I have grown in my skills as a nurse.  My manager and director are always available and helpful with any concerns or challenges I bring to them.  They truly advocate for their nurses. They work to advance the practice of nursing in our unit. I have been encouraged to find leadership roles in committees that are important to me. The patient population we serve has its challenges with language and culture, but I have truly loved learning how to serve this community.  I appreciate that, as a religious facility, I am encouraged to support my patients with prayer as requested.  I love that we begin our mornings with a daily devotional and communal prayer at change of shift report.  The hardest part of the job is the ongoing language barriers and low education level of our population, even with interpreter phone support the patient population requires lots of education targeted to the low levels of formal education.  I tellI others I have the best job ever, and actively recruit nurse friends to join me here.

It's toxic, more work is piled on your role and no increase in salary, people stepping on each other to make it to the top

Toxic, Overworked & Underpaid, Stressful, Increase workload every 2 weeks with unrealistic deadlines, No recognition, Shady, Draining, Too much drama. A lot of people have bad attitudes but it is a toxic environment so it is no surprise. It's not worth your sanity. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It is not routine, everyday is different. Always prepare for the worse, there is no structure, in my role I had no training so it was sink or swim. You always get tons of work piled on your plate which is unrealistic to do in a 8 hr time frame, Toxic management, Too much passive aggressiveness from Management and Leadership team, You will not be heard, This company always has a high turn around rate for people quitting cause the stress and environment is absolutely unbearable especially in the Silver Spring area.

This place would have been a good place to go work for if management was better or got rid off people who should have never been in charge. It was always stressful because management expected a lot out of you and expected you to pick up a work load that requires 3 people by yourself. They were completely unsupportive and the moral of this place was very low. The pay didn’t match the amount of work they put you through because they didn’t want to hire more people. It is exhausting to work with management who are so incompetent and would leave their staff behind when the office got real busy when we needed them the most. Because of management, the staff suffered burn out and would leave out of there physically and mentally exhausted. Overall the benefits and pay that this place may offer you, is not worth your mental/physical health to suffer because management was very poor and HR was little to no help at all. No management took responsibility for their actions and constantly covered themselves and shift the blame on staff when all we did was do our job to the best of our ability.
