Ive been employed with the Affinity Midlothian office as a RNCM for +1.5 years and been with other similar companies.   This has been the best I’ve worked with; we have a team that works so well together, it’s something that you don’t often find in healthcare.  The culture is positive, we hype one another up, support each other in tough cases, celebrate effective team work.  Leadership does a great job at ensuring the field staff are heard and try to improve ways that our work can go smoother and make patient care better.  They also do an incredible job at keeping RNCMs working within their contracted hours, and do not require on-call/holidays; instead, they keep their promise of work/life balance to their nurses and provide a separate on-call nurse staff in the rotation, along with admission nurses.   The thoughtful staffing alone is what makes me feel well taken care of at this company and makes me want to invite others to join the team.   Management listens to concerns, ideas and suggestions, vent sessions, and feel like kin.   Best part, the company really does all it can to ensure optimal patient care and providing the best outcomes for end of life services for patients and their families -  our company provides music therapy on top of the other standard disciplines which is not common with other companies and is an incredible benefit.  

I would say - cons:  insurance is small and private, can be a pain to work with sometimes. I do wish we had a more commonly used, big name insurance company so we had more options. However, I haven’t had an issue using it as of it.    I also wish we had the option for company vehicles or toll scanners for our vehicles; however we are able to submit expense reports for tolls and get reimbursed, and we do get gas mileage reimbursement (but it is NOT the federal standard, which is very disappointing).    Also have been told about referral bonuses and preceptor pay but have yet to see it reflected. 

Overall, pros absolutely outweigh the cons. I’m super pleased with my employment at Affinity so far!

As a critical care nurse, I have seen the pain and suffering that people endure at end of life. I believe in the philosophy of hospice, and wanted to end my career bringing peace and comfort to patients and their family units at end of life. As an Advanced Heart Failure nurse, I worked with many hospice companies, and I chose Afficity because of their ability to provide not only hospice care, but also palliative care. Across the country, some hospice companies have been known to sign patients up for hospice, without the patient truly understanding that they cannot receive treatment for their disease any longer. If a hospice company has a high live-death discharge rate, perhaps they are signing patients up too soon? I love that Affinity offers palliative care. We can truly assess the patients goals and follow them through the trajectory of their disease, allowing patients to pursue medical care if available, and supporting them when treatment is no longer available. We treat the whole family unit; not just the patient. Although we are out seeing patients individually, there is a whole team who supports your journey. 

Working at Affinity Hospice and Palliative Care as a Community Liaison is an incredibly fulfilling experience. From the moment I joined the team, I felt welcomed and supported, which is a testament to the family-like atmosphere that defines our workplace. Trust is at the core of everything we do, and it's evident in our daily interactions with colleagues, patients, and their families.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No proper training. Always  communicated you can trust me. Never got asked about what my issues were. Just got asked to leave my computer and badge. They tolerated other employees throwing a fit and leaving the office and working from home. Definitely favoritism. Everyone knew everyone. My colleagues knew I was being termed before I did. Very toxic.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
This company is like a family, everyone came from a different hospice company and had worked together previously. There was favoritism proven time and time again. Every time a conversation needed to be had my side of the story didnt matter. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Organize team get everyone up to speed on what patients need to be seen etc.

I am a HHA and I really enjoy working for this company. Things I love are schedule flexibility, the communication between staff is wonderful , management really cares and often shows appreciation towards staff, pay rate is fair and the company is very organized. We have a wonder clinical and music therapy team that really makes our clients day. It feels like a family here at Affinity and we really make a great team. I’ve worked at similar places and this by far is the best. I actually feel good about going to work and I’m very grateful to be apart of this Dream Team. Also the no work on weekends and holidays are also an added bonus .  The most enjoyable part of my job is being able to help families in their time of need and see that i have helped to make a difference. The hardest part of my job id say is it’s a lot of driving around at times but other then that I don’t have much to complain about. 

They do not keep their word,  the management does not care about your work/family life balance- but can guarentee they are at home with their families by 4pm call.  Unless you are a brown noser and suck up to management, consider yourself a piece of scum on their shoes, they overwork you and do not provide help especially if you vocalize you are swamped out in the field.  Do not appreciate good, honest workers but yet promote the ones that do the least amount of work just because they try to fit in with the crowd.  When you have had enough of their toxic enivironment and decide to leave, they steal your PTO and do not pay you out and the last day the just keep adding assignments to you even though there are plenty of capable nurses in office that could come out in the field to help.

Incredible TEAM!
Caring and compassionate not only for patients and their families but for staff too. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
As with anything healthcare related: 
maintaining boundaries because you will fall in love with your patients and their families. 
Prioritizing patient needs and balancing with wants.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Hospice is a very autonomous job. The management encourages this and supports it. 

You begin with routine assigned patients and field urgent needs.

Loved the job of Hospice but not with the current “management ”. There is no follow through. No real orientation schedule upon hire. Management is very hands-off. Will admit when their nurses are “under water” but still sit in their office or typically in the comfort of their own homes. Will talk poorly about you to others and vice versa. No annual reviews. Pay is subpar. Raises are 2% across the board; so you could be a great employee that goes above and beyond and still get the same raise as someone who doesn’t do as much as you or work as hard. Your concerns will be dismissed. My teammates were pretty great (chaplain, social workers, other nurses, aides, etc). If you can deal with hands off management and no leadership, this is the company for you. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
This company is under poor leadership 
They wrongfully fire or terminate employees. 
The patient care is not thorough- employees lie about hands on patient care time and also ED does not like to treat/escalate care . I would not let my love one to be a patient here. If you don’t want to hinder your career path stay away from this company.

The stress related to leadership 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very poor. Backstabbing & gossiping. NO Support for clinicians 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very boring the census never grew and still has not.

My experience with Affinity was not a good one. I worked as an RN case manager, driving from one end of the state to the other with minimal mileage reimbursement. It was a very busy day with several hours of driving and then documenting late into the evening I did not feel that my Hospice experience was valued, I worked with some very compassionate caregivers but the upper management was not considerate toward working field staff. I do not recommend working here. They have a revolving door for staff and staff retention. It’s very disorganized and poorly managed.
