What is the best part of working at the company?
Employees are friendly and helpful. I felt supported and trusted to complete the tasks charged to me. My Director was always available to assist and provide guidance when needed and requested. I was able to make the job my own and excel in the workplace.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The hiring manager, in her rush to onboard me so she could take another job, did not accurately complete my onboarding paperwork, which cost me a huge decrease in salary. It was immediately discovered and brought to the attention of the Division Director and State Personnel. Despite State Personnel stating the Department could correct the issue and the HR Director being provided the documentation needed to complete this, he refused. I spent years trying to correct the issue before taking a promotion in another Department. I would have happily stayed at Public Health if the situation was resolved.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment was friendly and helpful. We looked out for one another. We celebrated life, be it birthdays, pregnancy, or holidays. Everyone was supportive. It was fun to be around.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I started my typical day checking my email and reviewing things from the previous day. I also checked my board to see if I had any deadlines pending. Usually, I had items waiting for my supervisor's signature, so when she arrived, she would pass by and sign those documents. I had folders for documents needing signature for my supervisor, the bureau director, and finance and as I completed items, I would place them there. Most of my morning was spent handling finance/budgeting and HR tasks, meetings, emails, or calls. Bureau Director and finance folders were delivered mid-morning or around lunch time. Sometimes I traveled for interviews or visited other offices across the state for various reasons. I usually went to lunch around 1pm. After lunch, I reviewed items in my inbox and email for processing, updated the board, and prepared items for the next day.  My supervisor usually came by to get me when time to leave as we usually parked near each other. On telework days, I checked emails, attended virtual calls and other meetings, and completed what tasks I could from home. I also aligned tasks that needed in-person attention for the next day.

	Operate office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, and phone systems, and use computers for spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and other applications.  Greet visitors or callers and handle their inquiries or direct them to the appropriate persons according to their needs.  Answer telephones and give information to callers, take messages, or transfer calls to appropriate individuals.  Set up and maintain paper and electronic filing systems for records, correspondence, and other material.  Locate and attach appropriate files to incoming correspondence requiring replies.  Open, read, route, and distribute incoming mail or other materials and answer routine letters.  Complete forms in accordance with company procedures.  Make copies of correspondence or other printed material.  Review work done by others to check for correct spelling and grammar, ensure that company format policies are followed, and recommend revisions.  Compose, type, and distribute meeting notes, routine correspondence, and reports.  Learn to operate new office technologies as they are developed and implemented.  Maintain scheduling and event calendars.  Schedule and confirm appointments for clients, customers, or supervisors.  Manage projects or contribute to committee or team work.  Mail newsletters, promotional material, or other information.  Order and dispense supplies.  Conduct searches to find needed information, using such sources as the Internet.  Provide services to customers, such as order placement or account information.  Collect and disburse funds from cash accounts, and keep records of collections and disbursements.  Arrange conference, meeting, or travel reservations for office personnel.  Operate electronic mail systems; coordinate the flow of information, internally or with other organizations.

Alabama Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
Program Director
This role emphasizes clinical and management skills. The role encompasses directing the Child Lead Program to ensure that all program activities comply with National Lead Standards and all administrative functions adhere to ADPH protocol.
Provides medical and environmental case management for all children with a confirmed elevated blood lead level of 10μg/dL, so that all cases are identified, followed and entered into lead database.
Conduct community home health visits to families and agencies to monitor protocols.
Provide consultation service, advisory and education service.
Plan, organize, implement and evaluate the activities for the Alabama Childhood Lead Program throughout the state.
Compile data for use in preparing program budgets.
Prepare proposals for budget hearing.
Provide information to general public, clients and civic
organizations, concerning services offered.
Manages child lead data to ensure accuracy of information so that
reports are accurate and complete.
Responsible for providing statewide health education materials to
include personnel, budgeting and organizational activities.
Supervises an ASA II and provides administrative guidance in a
clear, precise manner.

Worked for ADPH for a year and a half. Completed my MPH while employed there. Got one 2 step raise after my 6 month probationary period. Program Manager, if that is what you want to call him, had NO IDEA of how to run a successful Communicable Disease Program. He Lacked Education and experience to become Program Manager and refused to take advice from other leaders and experienced people. High morbidity rates in the health district lead to everyone being over worked. They would not hire more people. Just kept piling the work on people. Not compensating employees based on merit, tenure, etc. Chastised employees for taking time off or sick days. Wanted to know why you were taking time off. Had a clock in system and if you clocked out after 5 pm cause you were working late, the Program Manager would change your time to meet the requirements of ADPH.  Don't get me started on mileage. To claim mileage, it would take an act of God for them to approve it after having to fill out 3 different forms. Then it would take 6-8 weeks to get reimbursement. Traveled out of state for training. I had to pay for everything up front on the mediocre salary of 31k (gross) 19k (Net). Only to have to wait 3 MONTHS to be reimbursed.

Bottom line, the ADPH does not value its employees and many people just deal with the nonsense for the job security.

Receive survey assignment from supervisor. As team coordinator, responsible for making team assignments for team members. Prepared for survey by making copies and obtaining necessary documents. Traveled to survey. Conducted all survey tasks required and investigated any complaints or concerns. Continuously communicated with the facility and was the mediator between the facility and survey team. Reported to supervisor in main office located in Montgomery, Alabama. After exit from facility, report to office to write up report and gather documents to be submitted to the main office for processing. Communicated with the facility of necessary post-survey.
Meet new people in different places throughout the state
Stressful and demanding position- responsible for ensuring team members are following CMS survey process and completing their tasks and investigations and ensuring team  has gathered evidence needed. Environment and each survey is unique and unpredictable. Did not know where going or for how long

A typical day would consist of having the pleasure of working with wonderful people to accomplish specific goals in regards to Cancer Prevention and Control.  Our program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for women who meet eligibility guidelines. In addition to that, we promote screening guidelines and quality assurance for Colorectal Cancer through worksite wellness programs, reduce barriers in patient access to Colorectal Cancer screenings (such as copays) and we educate patents about easier ways to be screened for Colorectal Cancer.  

Since I've been working here, I've learned how much cancer affects all kinds of individuals.  I've learned the value of teamwork, being a leader and communication.  The hardest part of this job, would be to hear of a program participant that has had a positive test.  The most enjoyable part of my job is being able to help others.

ADPH has the typical schedule of five days per week, forty hours per week.  While employed with ADPH, I have learned crisis intervention/management/prevention, case management, benefits (insurance, entitlement programs, and community resources, etc.) coordination, etc.  
The most difficult part of the job of a public health social worker is lack of resources.  In Alabama a large portion of the population is rural and funding is limited and stretched among the "at risk" population.  That fact does encourage creative thinking and sometimes you can identify/implement a "work around."  The most enjoyable parts of the job are seeing that you have made an impact upon the lives of some of the consumers with whom you work.  There are also opportunities provided for continuous learning, marketing, etc.

One of the most toxic jobs l've ever had! The work was pretty easy as a RN but the micromanaging was overbearing. It was constant nitpicking! It's always someone watching you from management all over the building to see if you make the smallest error whether it's coming in one or two minutes late or taking your full hour that you're given per employee handbook. It created a culture of surveillance rather than support. It was always something! I wouldn't recommend this job to anyone. It definitely isn't worth the pay with all of the harassment and hostility you have to deal with. I even had patients that would say, "I'm surprised you still work here." l've always heard about their high turnover rate and wondered why but I definitely found out during my time working there.

Enjoyable place to work. Traveled short distances in Mobile and Baldwin County to state and school states to perform wellness checks. Finger sticks to perform lipid profile checks, blood pressure screenings and diabetic screenings. Health, wellness and medication education. I learned how much I enjoy just being with
people and helping them with real life situations. Educating patients the importance of a healthy life style, that they can take home and make changes to their life style, eating habits. importance of medication administration and to make sure they take their meds as prescribed by their physician.

This is a part-time position.  Wellness nurses perform well screenings for Alabama State employees and Alabama teachers.  Currently I work only a couple of days per week, which fits my current situation.  This position has been extremely good for me, but I need something more challenging and stimulating.  The best part of this position is working with people.  It has allowed me to keep a bit/few of my skills up to date and feel as though I am making a difference.  The hardest part of the job is that I live in Fairhope and must travel to Mobile for this job.  The workplace culture is extremely pleasant and professional.  Management does the best they can with their limited resources.
