Alameda County Medical Center is certainly not an organization one would choose to stay for the long-term. There is little to no advancement. Hard work is rarely appreciated. Individuals in leadership and management positions are, for the most part, not qualified for their positions. The organization lacks clear goals and reasonable expectations. Overall, this is a broken system. If you have friends in high places, you are destined to be fairly compensated and rewarded. Skill and intelligence are rarely rewarded. A typical day at work includes completing many tasks outside of a given job description, however management takes the credit for their workers' accomplishments. 

One positive aspect has been the level of cultural competence. For the most part, coworkers respect one another regardless of differences in beliefs and way of life. 

Health coverage/cost is also a positive aspect of working for this organization. 

Advice to upper management is to hire qualified leaders instead of those who simply look good on paper. Instead of hiring consultant team after consulting team, who tend to make matters worse, focus on the permanent employees in management positions who should be evaluated on their performance.

Alameda Health System is a good place to gain experience but I would not consider it a good place to work. While there are many wonderful employees there are too many long-term employees that are jealous, rude, and bitter. Management often consists of unskilled  'interim' Consultants that have been there for years. Even if you don't work for one of these managers you will have to deal with them (and their unskilled employees). While the pay is quite good it is not very competitive for the Bay Area. Much of the culture consists of gossip, backbiting, and other inappropriate behaviors that are encouraged by unskilled, interim managers.

Hard work is rarely appreciated

C-Suite turnover is high
Rewards are doled out by favoritism and not performance
Pay increases are done using a 'grading-curve' type procedure
Salary is based on who you know or can manipulate

As another reviewer said, "If you have friends in high places, you are destined to be fairly compensated and rewarded;" however, if you do not you are better getting a job somewhere else. If you live in the Bay Area, there are much better opportunities - unless, of course, you are unskilled and can rise through the abuse using manipulation.

I loved working here. It wasn't about the pay it was more so of the benefits. Pretty much free benefits for you and the family. The pay is OK but I was willing to sacrifice due to the benefits. 

The Managers that I interacted with was really nice and did care about your well being. I only wished my manager would have gone to bat for me when there were positions made available. If you are a good employee that goes above and beyond their job description you would think they will talk to HR. 

I can finally see why a lot of employees stay in their current role. Some are due to being comfortable but most of the time when you try to apply for a different position you have to meet all job requirements before you can even meet with the hiring manager. I had the hiring manager reach out to the HR recruiter stating they want to meet with me but they refused. I never heard of a recruiter or HR refusing the hiring manager a candidate they wanted to meet. 

This is one of the key reasons how you lower morale in the workplace. They talk about boosting morale but the HR department is outdated. There are people that abuse the system yet they are still there and HR protects them but for the people that genuinely care about their jobs and want to advance they stunt your growth

Working in a closed tight workspace on phones and computers. Coordinating with the providers being the liaison between the patients and the provider to ensure patients are cared for. Scheduling specialty clinic appointments and procedures ED and hospital discharge. I have learned communication skills adapt to different schedules for the provider managing calendars attending several zoom meetings conduct OSW standard work processes for each workflow assigned and to share with management. Using a CRM communication tool in EPIC. View and verify medical insurances for each specialty clinic service. Train new employees in a super user role as needed. Management has lack follow through make promises that are not kept. My dept has employees who come from many different backgrounds and faiths but we respect each others differences and work as a team. The hardest part of my job is not being able to be compensated for the added work assigned not allowed to work for and moved out of our work home to merge with another dept against the advise of the employees that do the job

A typical day at work in the Environmental Health & Safety department includes the weekly staff meeting, tracking scalable events and codes called at the hospital throughout the day, checking the mailroom, archiving hard copy documents from previous years to make space for the upcoming year's documents, proofing email correspondence for my manager before it is disseminated, preparing documents for 2 monthly committee meetings and entering tasks into my weekly productivity log. What I have learned is the importance of not letting new environments, transition and increasing workloads overwhelm you mentally and negatively affect your work ethic. Management has been understanding and patient as I have adjusted to a new role which required more than I was accustomed to at the time. My coworkers have been amazingly helpful. The hardest part of the job was trusting and being confident enough in myself to know complete it to acceptable standard. The most enjoyable part of the job is seeing all that is accomplished from the team effort and my manager encouraging me to use my voice.

A typical day a work is very fast paced, I come in get my computer programs open and get straight to work.  The Emergency Room is always busy and filled with people from all over the Bay area.  As I interview patients they often share with me pieces of their life.  I spend at least 3 to 5 minutes with each of  my patients and so I have to pleasure of being a positive image to represent Highland Hospital.

Each day I learn something weather it be an easier way to do something or coding a new insurance I always learn something. The hardest part of my job is trying to get all of my co-workers working together like a well oiled machine because it is very necessary for us to keep up with the patient flow.

What I enjoy most about working here is that I get to interact with so many people from various walks of life. I get to meet highly educated people, poor people, foreign people, people who are medical miracles, people with different cultural and religious beliefs.I eel like I  have spoken to at least one person from every part of the world.

Alameda Health Systems is a great place to learn if you are interested in a career in the health care industry however there is no room for advancement unless you know somebody which is usually how you get hired hire. 

Management here is horrible. Don't expect to work for an organized management team who's focused on leading their staff into success. 

Staff shortage seems to be a big issue here. Expect to things outside of your job duties. 

Communication within managers is horrible. One manager says one thing, the other manager says another which creates a lot of confusion within departments. 

Managers never offer any feed back. Don't expect to be recognized for your hard work. 

Morale is low in departments.  

Feedback from employees is not welcomed.

Employees are ghetto. No other way to put it.  No one is a team player or wants to do anything outside of their job. 

If this place would hire qualified employees and managers with leadership abilities to lead these departments this organization would improve a lot. 

Pay is good but that's about it.

Depending on the department a day can range from extreme stress-to-boring hours-upon-hours (shifts are usually rotated). Although you will experience both within the 3-day period, this extremity is not for whom want steady-pace. 

I learned a lot. I find mornings peaceful with up-rush during mid-day. Most of the hecticity resides in the management and clerical work, versus the clinical. 

The work-culture is dominantly populated by an affirmative culture of hard workers. I am from Taiwan and find that the balance between workers is shared relatively evenly.

Although you might not get along with all staff, you will find a good select few that are helpful, fun, and can make you enjoy the environment, over time.

I find nights-to-early mornings most enjoyable. Good ER and bed-side experience, I would start off working immediately at noon-ish and have the rest of my shift relatively relaxed. Seldom night-time emergencies at Highland.

I was a contractor traveler in the occupational and hand therapy department . I was there there for 3 months in Oakland and experienced one of the worst cases of poor management I have ever seen. 

Not only were they actively causing confusion to patients and staff alike, they ended up canceling my contract after I fell sick and was unable to take on a normal caseload. Now they're trying to hire more contracting staff and I'm here to tell you stay away. They will use you and burn you out without a care in the world. If you get even a minute of overtime, your contract will be canceled. They required me to clock in for lunch manually and would send weekly emails threatening cancellation of contracts with even a minute of overtime. The staff itself is great but highly burned out. The whole system needs to be completely restructured and management themselves need to learn to take accountability for their poor decisions. 

Having said that, the pay is excellent thanks to the union. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing:  Organization does not value their leaders.  High turnover and political leadership model.  Leadership and governance only reacts to collective bargaining and as a result of clown and bad faith bargaining has experienced recent to executive complete overhaul  and new regime even more disrespectful and lied about recent layoffs due to financial constraints and really about reorganization to hire preferred replacement leaders fitting certain characteristics values by new leaders. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of support for managers from leadership! 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Poor leadership only respond to leverage from collective bargaining efforts. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working 50 hours per week without  any recognition!  Leadership dumps daily extensive basic charge posting tasks on their managers impacting other job responsibilities.
