Albany Area Primary Health Care

1. After getting this DSME program ADA certified for this group of FQHC's-  the program quickly became an afterthought, with zero funding for supplies and zero support from management.
2. Even though there was only one diabetes educator, the expectation was to cover four plus clinics per week, no home base office & no desk.
4. PCP's, Midlevel's, OB's, and Pediatrician's send referrals for DSME. Random employee's schedule patients for DSME. Goal is to schedule patients back to back. 
5. The DSME process is chaotic and no one knows/cares about the program itself, (besides the CDCES) unless "productivity is down". 
6. The Program coordinator, CDCES will deliver all education, make all education packets, & call patients to reschedule, etc. The CDCES has no budget  or time for continuing education, supplies, etc., & cannot make any decisions about or for the program.
7. The CDCES will report to a autocratic-style DON, with no prior DSME experience. There will never be any communication unless negative or the CDCES initiates. No meetings. No inclusion on any committees, with exception of the diabetes advisory board meeting. The CDCES is on their own. 
8. The CDCES will receive 2 days of orientation, but no training for the position itself. There is no one to train the CDCES. However the CDCES, will be expected to train MA's for diabetes paraprofessional positions.
10. The RN/RD CDCES does not gain or  earn respect here, improved patient outcomes and evidence-based practice mean nothing to this organization. 


A typical workday for me was relatively normal. I would be reprimanded for my time management however my work would be completed every day. I learned a lot from this job experience. I was a stay-at-home mom for 11 years, so the opportunity was greatly appreciated. I enjoyed being around the people and different cultures. I truly enjoyed my job and miss it every day.

4. Strong likelihood of loan repayment. 

Cons 
1. Time Debt - if you get any loan repayment
2, Lower salary
3. The administration is all about productivity and does not value providers.
4. Disconnect between many clinic managers and providers. There is a difference between a "clinic manager" and a practice manager. 
5. The last CEO was definitely better than the present CEO. 
6. Administrators are gatekeepers and very difficult to make impactful change. 
7. Not the most innovative place to work

An average day at worked consists of scanning medical records and placing records and the appropriate charts, answering phones, making appointments for  our family planning program at the local colleges.
I love my manager he is so easy going and understanding.  We have some awesome caring Physicians. 
The entire office is like one big family. The front staff works well together and response well with patients checking in or out.
AAPHC is one awsome place to work.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Some providers are difficult to work with and they require fast learning on new systems. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working with difficult providers and their lack of patience.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Uplifting among coworkers but not all providers are tolerant of learning difficulties.

A typical day would be busy and stressful.I have learned to perfect all of my medical assisting skills. Management needs to focus more on employees needs other than just the company itself. The hardest part of the job is being able to work at a fast pace and still provide the best possible care for the patient. Most enjoyable part is meeting great patients and making a difference in their lives.

AAPHC is based on the belief that everyone is entitled to health care. I love how they help the less fortunate & reach out to the rural
Areas that are oftentimes looked over. I worked with a great bunch of nurses and staff. They were dedicated to their jobs. 

Lack of experienced leaders.
Workplace culture is less than ideal.
There are a lot of "clicks" so opportunities for growth is highly driven by personal relationships instead of a person's experience and quality of work.

I love being apart of the AAPHC family. There are some cons of course but overall it’s great. I love that the schedule is 8-5 with weekends and paid holidays off. There are opportunities for overtime on Saturdays as well which has benefited me greatly.

I am new to healthcare so it was a big change fro me coming from sales. The person who trained me made everything so simple and easy to adapt to. Im a very outgoing person so it wasnt hard for me to get use to the staff. Everyone made me feel welcome. With any job there will be things you dont like but the pros outweigh the cons for me
