Let it be stated that when I was employed in the beginning with Alfa- the employee morale and workplace was better. I understood what was required of me concerning customer service and  "sales." After management was changed it was not for the better. All employees were explained the "new" way and title of our jobs. We were now Customer Sales Representatives. We were now with quotas each week, quota calls for life, auto, and assisting with homeowners quotas and if we did not meet the requirements--our "performance review" meaning salaries- reflected it. A typical Customer Sales Day was non-stop from the minute you hit the door until it was time to go home. It seemed by become more emphasis on "sales" move them in and move them out. The new quotas are not bad in themselves but everyone become very competitive however, to a point where backstabbing was coming between employees. Employees would watch other employees to match sure about quotas. Everyone knew that management kept watch and had "certain" individuals report to them of any questionable activity. 
 
I am grateful I am not there any longer. I was able to obtain employment elsewhere and been so blessed to work with people who enjoy what they do and I enjoy what I do because I enjoy them.

I typical day at the office would be to sign on to the AS/400's (Production and Development for two Systems four partitions total) and make sure all subsystems are up and there are no outstanding messages waiting for a reply. Then check all outq's for messages. I would also check to make sure the status of Itera up and running.Then I would do a morning check run for multiple accounts (Claims and Underwriting). Then run Claims reports and Underwriting reports. Then check my email and tickets. Create user profiles on the AS/400 and in SIS (security software). Schedule incoming tapes to come in on the following day and get backup tapes ready to go out. Update documentation, Transmit jobs via multiple servers. Run afternoon check run and miscellaneous tasks. I have great co-workers and upper management has always been great at explaining new tasks coming up and they have always been able to answer and questions that I have had for them, Hardest part of the job is keeping up with profile security as their are multiple rolls in each position and they each have different functions that are available to them that I have to figure out. The most enjoyable part is great relationship with co workers.

Call center was properly staffed. Call volume was acceptable.
Job duties were clear and concise.

Information in interview was misleading and differed from actual events that occured once assignment began.
Hours worked were unreasonable and changed once assignment began and was advised working this schedule was mandatory- 4 ten hour days in a row- Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon- not discussed during interview.
Manager behaved inappropriately- favoratism to bi-lingual staff and staff whose family also worked with company; sent personal emails to certain staff members.
Manager's communication style was unprofessional- irritated, condescending and sarcastic. Very unprofessional.

Retired after 37 years as the company's first compliance officer. I also worked government affairs. During my tenure there I was fortunate enough to work first in marketing, then underwriting and then legal. I worked with some great folks whose teamwork efforts made it easy for me to succeed in my job. We had great IT,  Claims, Marketing, Federation,  Training, Auditing and Government Affairs  departments with outstanding personnel! Benefits included great group medical, short and long term disability, 401 K, dental and eye insurance and great holiday and PTO benefits. The hardest part of my job was being able to accomplish everything I had to do doing legislative sessions in the 11 states of Alfa's operations! I was part of management and there were times when I disagreed with others in management and some in higher positions than mine. But, overall if I had to pick a place to work, Alfa would be that choice!

The overall company was good to work for if I had been in the corporate workforce, but I was in a satellite office under the owner of that office.  

Working with the public was awesome and teaching insurance to unknowing clients was fun.
 
What I learned was to keep my mouth closed when I was under attack by the owner.

Management was the owner and she played favorites.

Workplace culture was; if you weren't a favorite, you were laughed at, yelled at, ignored for raises and stepped over for advancement. 

Hardest part was getting through the three days a week I had to work under her.

Most enjoyable part was helping the clients understand insurance and working with them to get the coverage they needed. Meeting the new clients and seeing the established clients as they come in to pay their premium or to make changes was gratifying.

The job itself is good with the freedom and flexibility you need to be on the clock 24/7. However, that comes with small levels micro management from a district manager in the form of almost daily production reports. Ultimately a lot of success has to deal with what office you are assigned to and the staff that are assigned there to help you. I know very skilled and experienced agents struggling to hit numbers in a certain office while others seem to effortlessly cruise to success. With assigned staff that do not directly report to you and office space that you do not fully control, it can lead to an ideal situation or a very helpless feeling one. Overall, ALFA is a great company and depending where you are placed will have a lot to do with your success. 

Responsible for the preparation of policies, including the assembly of proper policy forms, proofreading for accuracy the computer-generated pages compared to the application, underwriters’, and policyowner services representatives’ instructors, and for proofreading for correctness and for clarification of policy information. To assure that these are mailed in a timely manner to appropriate destinations. This position is responsible for choosing the endorsements and amendments, and for the use of proper wording on these documents that best clarify policy conditions. I proofread all life company letters, checks, forms, and assures that all materials leaving the life departments. Also this position supervises the Proofreading unit in the absence of the Unit Supervisor.

The company is made up of reps who are older women set in their ways. The system and technology are so old compared to the rest of businesses not just insurance companies. The reps aren’t allowed to do their own job, they are required to call the home office for answers to give to your customer sitting right in front of you. So the customer just looks upset and confused at you b/c the company will not equip you with the knowledge to actually help your customer on your own to make the company look good and trustworthy. Not a good day to day experience. 

Alfa Insurance had numerous insurance lines: auto, home, fire, etc.
We would run various jobs associated with these lines 24 hours a day. Some jobs couldn't run at the same time with others so we had to be mindful at certain times of which ones were being processed by the computer. These job programs would generate printouts or billing that would have to be distributed to the department responsible for generating the job program. We had a competent group of people in the computer room. The hardest part of the job was making sure certain programs didn't run at the same time as others as they would access some of the same computer files.

This is a good company to get started with in your insurance career. Don't plan to stay long due to high turn over. You will be told that you are an independent contractor but you will be highly micro managed. They encourage you to write all of your friends and family's insurance then they will cut your contract. Management will keep you on board for about 3-5 years in most cases to allow you to build up your book of business before your contract is ended. This is a cycle with this company.
