The job provides solid investigative experience, and you will learn quickly due to the volume and variety of work pushed onto you. However, compensation does not match the workload or level of responsibility expected. The first red flag for me was the interview process. The interview felt more like a formality than an evaluation, with minimal discussion of experience or qualifications beyond what was already listed on my resume. It gave the impression that hiring standards were focused more on filling roles quickly than carefully assessing fit for the position.

This was shown with the other investigator hired in my state who had little or no relevant experience. Lower-performing employees may simply receive fewer case assignments rather than additional development or accountability, which can place a heavier workload on employees who consistently produce strong work and take pride in their cases.

During my time with the company, the role expanded significantly through ongoing job creep, with responsibilities that felt equivalent to multiple positions combined into one without corresponding pay adjustments. Raises were not provided when expected despite increased duties and performance expectations. Training materials are outdated and often insufficient, and new case types are frequently assigned without adequate training while still expecting high-quality results.

The company culture strongly emphasizes cost savings, which can leave employees feeling undervalued. There is an expectation to take on additional responsibilities without additional pay, and employees who question workload or compensation may feel discouraged from doing so as it will not be taken seriously. Rather leadership will tell you you are "overwhelmed" rather than taking accountability for their job creep. 

A major concern is pay structure: drive time, administrative work, and report writing are compensated at state minimum wage rates. For a large corporation reporting strong financial performance  this past year, this pay model feels misaligned and unacceptable with the professional and investigative nature of the work. 

This role may be useful as a short-term stepping stone for experience, but prospective employees should carefully consider the lack of pay and long-term sustainability before accepting the position. 

Working for Allied Universal Compliance and Investigations has been very rewarding so far. A typical day at work can be very different depending on the case and even the same case can vary day to day. You are in your vehicle for a lot of the time, so if that is not something that is appealing to you it most likely won't be a fit for you. This job has taught me that you can never be too prepared for something. Also, that you can not expect to know everything and to expect the unexpected. Things can and do change as human beings are usually routine, anyone at any moment can decide to do something you weren't expecting them to. At the end of the day you try your best with the information you have or have gathered yourself. Management is very communicative as they have to as most Investigators live all over. It's a position where you will most likely not be seeing your managers face to face, so emails, calls, texts, will be the main form of communication. Knowing this management tries to be available in said ways during the day. If you can't reach someone for whatever reason there is always someone else during the chain you can reach out to.  Workplace culture is mostly everyone trying to help everyone be successful. At the end of the day you want results so everyone does their best to set you up in the best position possible. The hardest part of the job can be the unpredictability of it sometimes. Cases vary and the time does as well. Some checks can be subpar just based on the types of cases you have been getting and you have no control over that. The most enjoyable part of the job I feel is the way you feel invested in.  You are apart of a company that cares about the work you do, but also the PEOPLE who do the work. There is no work without you and they understand that.  


A typical workday involves case preparation either the night before or the morning of to review key details, followed by traveling to the provided residence and conducting stationary surveillance while remaining alert for any activity, including completing hourly time shots. Through this role, I have developed skills in strategic surveillance positioning, balancing discretion and effectiveness during mobile surveillance, and producing video documentation and detailed reports. Management has been supportive and communicative, particularly through consistent team updates and availability for questions. Due to the independent nature of the role, exposure to workplace culture has been limited thus far. The most challenging aspects of the job include long travel times, maintaining sustained focus for extended periods, decision-making during mobile surveillance, and the overall time commitment, as workdays can extend beyond eight hours when accounting for travel and post-shift reporting. While the role initially offered a strong level of engagement, maintaining constant alertness and working in varying weather conditions can be demanding over time.

At Allied Universal Compliance and Investigations every day is different for an investigator. Having the ability to work out of my home, gives me the opportunity to be there for my family and friends if needed. I feel supported with my opinions, questions and work product by my management team. The work culture is unlike I have seen at other employers because everyone works typically out of their own home, but you still feel a good moral throughout the company. The hardest part of the job is keeping focused and the overall objective of your job, which is the client. Things move and happen very quickly in surveillance, so you need to be able to pivot and adapt. The most enjoyable part of the job is knowing that the work product you provide to the client is exactly what they wanted and exceed their expectations. You actually receive this feedback from case managers and your own managers. It gives you that boost you need. One of the biggest pluses at Allied is, they care about you. You aren't just a number. We have all been at one of those employers where you are just some numbers on a piece of paper. Another aspect is that I feel more supported because higher up supervisors will reach out to you directly to encourage you and just check on you. I think one of the biggest surprises is the President records and sends out a monthly update where he announces work anniversaries for every employee and provides updates. It might be something small to people and wouldn't matter to others, but it shows me that the company appreciates and cares about their employees. 

If you're looking to get into investigations, this job is a great stepping stone. This was my first job out of college after earning my B.S. in Criminal Justice, and it gave me solid experience in surveillance and report writing.
Management was okay, my investigations manager was very supportive and understanding, which I appreciated, whenever I needed help he was right there. Some of the case managers were helpful, but others would never respond when I needed assistance... but whatever.
Now, onto the issues. Vehicle wear and tear is a big one, and certain expenses aren’t compensated. Safety can also be a concern, especially when working in sketchy neighborhoods. But one of the biggest frustrations for me was the high pressure for numbers, performance was judged based on metrics like activity rate and PID shots, which is frustrating because claimant movement is completely out of an investigator’s control.
One thing I did enjoy was the schedule. Most days, I’d be home by 2 PM, start my report around 3 PM, and finish by 4 or 4:30 PM, with the day typically starting around 6 AM. Some cases were an hour or more away, but that wasn’t super common. 
Overall, this job is a solid way to gain experience in investigations, but not something I’d stick with long-term. If you’re considering it, just be prepared for long hours in the car, unpredictable workdays, and some pressure to hit performance numbers.

I worked in operations for this company for several months before they replaced my team with an AI tool. After that I went to orientation to work as a field investigator. I did not know a lot about what the expectations for the role were prior to my first day of training in the field. The orientation was entirely virtual and was not really a great preparation for the field. The company sent me about 4 to 5 hours away from my town for field training and put me up in a sketchy motel. 

The good - I felt that they provided most of the tools a person needs to complete the job except for a wifi hotspot which is not necessary but would increase work efficiency. I did not feel uncomfortable asking questions to others who worked there. 

The bad - Understand that you will likely not be using a company vehicle. You will most likely not be working near your home and your hours may be unpredictable. It would not be a good role for someone who wishes to spend time with their children or loved ones. 

The major reasons that caused me to leave, aside from relatively low pay for the actual value of the work they expect from a field investigator, was that I could not sustain living on the road all of the time and sleeping in dumpy hotels.  Also I felt that the corporate management structure was very bloated. 

The management focuses EVERYTHING on their team/region stats. An Investigator can have an outstanding result in the eyes of the client, but if the case manager believes you missed something, they lower your case grade. You are literally just a number in their eyes. If you handle your cases, management will leave you alone. Otherwise, they only talk to you when they have a question on a case. 
Investigator's get one day of training on report writing/format and are expected to not make a mistake. 
I worked over 400 cases during my tenure and only had one complaint from a case manager. After the ONE complaint, I had my cases reduced and was threatened to have remedial training. The Irony was that it was one of the handful of times I actually spoke with my manager. 
The case load is consistent, and you will always be working, which is good. You never get questioned on your expenses and there is always overtime available. I averaged between 9-12 hours per day. 50-60 hours per week. 

A typical day is fast paced but manageable, usually involving phone calls, statements, and report writing. What I really value is the autonomy. I am trusted to handle my cases, organize my time, and get the work done without being micromanaged.

Over time I have learned a lot about investigative work and how to manage caseloads effectively. Management has been consistently supportive and approachable, which makes a big difference when things get busy. The workplace culture is positive and encouraging, and I feel valued for the work I contribute.

The hardest part of the job can be balancing multiple cases at once, which requires good organization and self reliance. That said, it is also what makes the work interesting and rewarding. The most enjoyable part for me is the independence, being able to grow in my role and know that my efforts are trusted. Overall, I am very happy with my position and feel this is a company where I can continue to build my career.

Typical day is doing self starting projects that are intellectually challenging, laughing with my co-workers, and knowing that I am a valued member of the team. My team works all remote, but there is real love and respect that we have for one another that you cannot BUY. I have really only had two managers, but both have taught me so many different things, and different GOOD ways of arriving at the same answer. My manager always includes all of us in decision making and goes out of her way to make sure we are recognized and taken into consideration when ever a pay raise may be available  (sometimes before I am even looking out for myself).  I cannot imagine finding another job....I hope to be here until I retire or get fired, lol. HR has also proved to be supportive and kind in times of stress.

The job itself is reasonable with a decent work/life balance. I have learned more about the investigative side of insurance as well as the terminology. My team lead is fabulous. I do not have much interaction with my manager, although they have been perfectly fine thus far. 
My complaint is the pay. They have structured metrics that you are required to meet; however, there is no incentive to meet these other than not getting fired. I have exceeded those metric points well beyond expectations, volunteered to take on responsibilities outside of my role, and signed up for extra shifts. I have not received a raise in the years that I have been here. There are no Christmas bonuses or any other type of bonus. I do not earn a living wage and do not intend to stay long-term with this company. The CEO sends out quarterly letters discussing "record-breaking" growth, and yet, there is not enough to acknowledge the employees putting in the work towards that growth.
