A typical day at work would consist of completing daily reports issued to our health plan by CMS and the state's Med Quest office. It would also consist of reconciling members' records and processing enrollment requests that complies within our company's policies and procedures in addition to CMS' regulations and the state's regulations. I would also conduct outreach necessary to members, MAPD helpdesk, the State's Med Quest office & other insurance as necessary. I'm constantly interacting with other internal departments in verifying member eligibility, demographics and other concerns or issues and also interact with external companies such as Express Scripts to resolve PDE and FIR issues. Working for this company for the past 4-5 years I've learned a wealth of information in the health insurance field that has helped me challenge myself, obtain a lot of resourceful skills, strengthen the skills I've already possessed prior to being employed here and have helped me maximize my experience/background in this field. My co-workers have varied a lot throughout the years and currently they are compassionate about helping the organization succeed. I've had 5 managers and 3 supervisors throughout my work experience and learned a great deal of different managing skills. Currently, management is okay and is still in the process of trying to establish stability in the workplace, boost employee morale and improve employee compensation. The hardest part of the job I would say would be having to complete projects or tasks at hand whenever the resources become limited. The most enjoyable part of the job has always been helping our members, working creatively with others in coming up with a resolution of an issue and the sense of unity and ohana when working with my co-workers. I feel at times that everyone is striving to help our organization succeed.

I'm lucky enough to have such a wonderful manager and director as the head of my department.  Without that, I would have left shortly after getting here.  It's a great place to learn new skills, grow, and really discover what you're good at and what you want (and don't want) with your future.  Although, there isn't much room for advancement, and little to no support when it comes to professional growth.  In a lot of ways, AlohaCare is stuck in the past and dated in it's mindset.  Despite having a new (mostly from the mainland) executive board, the disconnect between the employees and the upper management grows with every new "innovation" they come up with.  You may end up with a godsent manager, like myself, but even they are limited to what they can offer due to the lack of upper management support.  The reason I stay is because of the people, and the amount of freedom (both creatively and professionally) that AlohaCare has to offer.  You will make lifelong friends here, but you may also find yourself on the outs with certain groups.  Silohs are a real issue, yet nothing has been done to alleviate the problems.  HR's turnover is so high, it's almost typical to have a new set of faces every year - therefore any progress made by the previous HR team has been lost or misguided.  I would reccomend anyone to work here, but it's not a place to be at for long.  Get what you need, then move on.

Daily activities varied with projects that were handed down from upper management that needed "immediate" attention - meaning that a funding deadline or audit was approaching or was missed. It seemed that our department was always playing catch up because of the constant turnover and changes in management. I had 5 different managers over the course of my one year of employment. Needless to say, I worked in a department where I was one of the longest employed.
Through this experience I learned to ask a lot of questions and to document/journal daily interactions with management and coworkers as it can be helpful when dealing with Human Resources. Another useful thing that I learned is that if long time employees warn you about longevity in a certain department, it is definitely worth transferring out or finding another employer. I tried to transfer out of my department several times, but was told that my "experience" was needed to train new team members.
In general, my immediate team members were generally friendly but very guarded during conversations because they were worried about job security. The hardest part of the job was trying to sort out the conflicting messages and requests of supervisors and upper management.
The most enjoyable part of this job was the direct customer contact during the service calls.
Overall, I'd say that I wouldn't have taken this position if I had known what a toxic environment it was going to be.

Alohacare has to be one of the more welcoming companies I have worked for. My department was focused on doing what is best for the member. Typically I came into work and reviewed the hospital report, emails, phone messages. Shortly after I would prioritize and address what was needed first. Then normally I along with a service navigator would have home visits scheduled with members to address their needs. We would complete a health summary and then refer to appropriate places according to their needs if we were unable to solve ourselves. The hardest part of my job was familiarizing myself to the outside resources and what they offered. This company was an HMO plan and I handled the Medicare population. I was able to learn quite a bit of the insurance aspect of healthcare in comparison to original Medicare. The most enjoyable part of my work was the rapport I developed with members and the working environment. Management had an open door policy and made it quite comfortable to ask any questions. In addition they were quite understanding on a personal level, especially while my husband was away for deployments.

I worked at AlohaCare for a little over two years. Upper management are unsupportive in helping you gain personal and professional growth. If you worked for the company before, it is more than likely that the position you end up in will not have any further promotion or position advancement. I asked and worked with management multiple times trying to get a promotion, or more fair compensation, for the amount of work that I did. Many of my duties were not included in my job description. HR & upper management would say that they were working on it for months at a time, but no progress would be made. I had the best supportive co-workers, but when you have to work with other departments, employees and management are very uncooperative. The company is generally very traditional and are not willing to change the way they do things.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Culture and mission. Alohacare exists to serve Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries in Hawaii and help them live better lives. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is a lot of responsibility to this work. People depend on everyone at AlohaCare to get the quality care they need on a timely basis.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Good locations for the offices whether you drive or use transit, especially the Honolulu office. Culture is like Ohana! Caring, fun and a lot of teamwork. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Work at office or remote. Attend or lead some meetings, make calls, email, work with documents and applications to manage financials, care coordination, clinical data, or claims. It depends on your role and functional area.

AlohaCare was once an organization who took care of their employees and members. Upper leadership turnover has resulted in AlohaCare losing its Spirit of Aloha the organization is now all about business and saving money and not ensuring their members are taken care of or their health care needs are met! If you are passionate about taking care of people this is NOT the job for you! If you are business focused and all about saving the state of Hawaii money and AlohaCare money then this is the job for you...Don’t count on job security at AlohaCare they will work you to death and then let you go when you no longer serve their purpose unless your a “favorite”,AlohaCare shows favoritism if your in your golden if your not your out!

This is speaking only for the interview process. Although i've never held a position here, I did have my own personal experience with interviewing with them. During the interview I felt like I was being talked down to, as if all of my prior work experiences were worthless. Which ultimately made ME feel pretty worthless. I felt like the managers interviewing me were very condescending and made a lot of unnecessary remarks. I've never had this experience before in any other interview. It led me to believe that if these employees feel like they can treat you that way when you're not apart of their organization yet, I can't even imagine how they would treat you if you actually worked for them and had to listen to them. I'm so glad I walked away.

I work remotely so it is flexible and dont have to commute. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is alot of work to do and not always enough help but everyone works well together.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
My team is amazing and we work really well together. Everyone wants to do their best to help the community and each other.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It is busy. There is always alot to tackle but it is manageable with support from your management and team. There are lots of projects that we work on and everyday we have to adjust accordingly.

Although there are high turn over within the company, there are also many who have been working there for over a decade. From my experience, everyone at AlohaCare respects one another and treat each other like family.  We never go a week without celebrating a colleague's special event -birthdays, marriage, birth of a new born etc. This is the friendliest workplace with relaxed environment & flexible hours. They don't micro manage you and allows you to learn and grow at your own pace. Everyone is always willing to help one another and take pride at each other's accomplishment.
