Alternate Solutions Health Network

As a former employee, I believe that an accurate picture needs to be painted for prospective employees who may be sitting on the fence.  This review has no emotionally charged rants, no finger pointing of other disciplines, or creating more of a divide between internal and field employees.  Just the facts.  I believe that the reviews posted paint a pretty accurate picture, however they need to be divided into two groups : in house employee review and field staff employees.

If you do decide to roll the dice, PLEASE ask to shadow internal and external employees for at least a couple days in each setting ( the same person to get an accurate picture ).  Each "side" has a very distorted view of what the other person "does" ie. "Field staff just ride around, see patients when they want and most are finished by noon or 1pm. They do not work full time hours" or "The internal staff sit around doing very little all day and they never answer phone calls.  They just exchange recipies and chat all day."

 It is vital to understanding how this organization works.  There can be a lot of finger pointing between Internal vs. Field.  If everyone had a better picture of what one another does it would likely defuse some of the division.  Everyone works very hard and is dealing with more and more demands for their job.  And NO ONE gets raises ever unless you change positions.

As a clinician who has worked both sides of this fence, I would like to review both.  (I have answered my star review questions according to my field staff job.)


Field staff- 

Pros- The patients! (And unbelievable stories! HIPPA safe. :)
Helping people/families.  
Support from other field staff as they are able.  Sometimes this is impossible due to your own work to do.

Expectation to pick up additional visits without additional compensation. (Except after 3pm when they start bonusing. )  And it is expected when there is a need.  You receive emails placating you to manipulate you into picking up the slack.  (It is very offensive and condescending.  Please stop.) This is like expecting your internal hourly employees to work overtime with no overtime pay and letting them know 2 hours before they are expecting to end their day. ( But why should this bother you?  "You are getting paid for the extra visits". Yes, paid what is due to me, but nothing additional. 
 Why not create overtime rates for extra points??  Perhaps this would be a better use of resources versus the need based bonus system.  (Why are we judged if we wait until the larger bonuses to pick up EXTRA work?  Yes, they monitor this....who only picks up when there are bonuses.  Does extra/over time in the field not deserve appropriate additional compensation???   

You will be worked like a dog.  Burn out is not whether you will or not it is just a matter of when.  

Scheduling can be a challenge and it can be hard to make your points.  It depends on your scheduler some, but other times they are forced to assign clients to any territory to get visits covered.

Your pay does not match the duties, effort, responsibility or workload. THERE ARE NO RAISES EVER.  I never hit a bonus my entire time in the field.

There is very little support from internal employees, be it supervisors, managers or liaisons.  This is due to them being flooded with ever increasing workloads/responsibilities that do not allow for them to do the jobs as described.  I wish good team building, support, were a priority there.  What a difference that would make overall.

PTO is ridiculous.  2 weeks.  No more EVER. vs. Internal staff who are given yearly increases for specific number of years with the company.  SO wrong.  This creates animosity between the staff. 
( This makes me wonder why it isn't the same.  Does the management think that field staff is not working full 40 hours a week? How disheartening.  We work 40-60 hours.  We do not clock out at 5pm and walk away until tomorrow.  We make phone calls, complete charting, prepare supplies, schedule next day visits etc.  There is an unwritten rule to never shut off your phone.  It is like always being on call, but you are not paid for it.

No paid holidays.  You are still required to work all of your points and if it is your holiday off, you must figure out what normal day off or extended hours you will work to make up for having the holiday off.  Many choose to just work their normal scheduled days as it is a cluster trying to fit 5 days of visits into 4.

Internal Staff-

Pros
Pin drop quiet work environment. 
Needed supplies and equipment generously provided
Special themed days to break up the monotony.
Great coworkers.  
No expected/mandatory overtime.  
PTO is normal with increases per time at company.
Special recognition/celebration of birthdays as a staff
Appreciation shown on group level.  i.e. Ice cream or treats, full Thanksgiving dinner brought in, perks unbeknownst to field staff.


Cons
The environment is very controlled including your work area.  Impressions are a priority for the powers that be.  It can be quite depressing.  They allow little to no individuality.  Limit is 2 or three personal items visible in cubicle.  We work 40 hours a week.  Management needs to realize this.  Seeing photos of our children/family lead to better attitudes and allows others a glimpse into our coworker's life.  It BUILDS bonds that support team work and relationships.  

The color scheme is gray, light gray and locker room gray.  Changing this alone would boo
st morale, productivity, and satisfaction.  (Do your research. It is proven that certain colors affects different aspects of a person hunger, mood, productivity, satisfaction. )

There are many demands and your job description is ever changing.  Adding duties and responsibilities without compensation.  There is nothing to do about it unless you quit.  Many have done just that.

Micro-management - I wish I could put that in bold letters.  It is ridiculous.  There is very little trust or confidence in people to do their job.  (Do the managers realize that as field staff I went into people's homes unsupervised?  Performed my assessment/care, teaching, communicating with other professionals involved in the case without needed approval? In the field lives at stake. I am trusted to do this... then why all of the checking-up, delay of care and waiting for an equally qualified person's approval.   It is frustrating and a waste of resources.  (People who look behind doors have stood behind doors.)

Favoritism/gossip- Yes, I know in any company this size it is inevitable, but there needs to be a line and open/anonymous communication to address it.  It is affecting morale, productivity and divides the team.  

Lack of professionalism with communication.
All communication is to be done via email, even if you are sitting across from someone.

Mandated field visits for nurses working in field staff support areas.  No overtime pay.  Regular visit compensation.

Getting "chewed out" by top management for things beyond your control.   It is such juvenile and bullying behavior, especially in front of colleagues.  (We are all working for the same goal here.)
 
Overall, there are many great people there, inside and out.  They have good aspirations.  They are constantly evolving.  Money driven.  Growth is good....but is it sacrificing quality if care and losing people who are valuable assets?  Yes, the positions can be filled with new people but the ones leaving are the ones you want to keep.  They are caring, smart, dependable,accountable, positive  and supportive.  Not anybody has these qualities.  Who do you want your team to be?

ASHN is one of those places that truly lives by non-discrimination. The organization is a melting pot all across the board. If you walk into the corporate office, you'll see people from all walks of life from college students working their part-time jobs to full-time nurses at their desks to people finishing out their tenure with the company and looking to retire. When you get to know people, you'll see that the organization has got people who live in large houses with tons of family and people who live in little apartments getting by through college. I truly feel this organization thrives on diversity. 

There are positions for everyone willing to work. There's entry-level data entry where you focus on entering accurate data into patient charts. There's two halves to medical records, focusing on accurate patient documentation being sent off to insurance and getting physician compliance type things. There's clinical review where nurses review all kinds of things. When I say there are people from all walks of life, I mean it. I mentioned college students working part-time jobs with maybe their high school diploma or maybe an associate's while finishing a higher degree. There are nurses who've had their bachelor's degrees for years. There are employees with master's degrees. Everyone gets along. 

This is not the company to work for if you have no desire to participate in the healthcare industry. This is not the place to work if you're looking for a paycheck without wanting to do the work. Every department within the organization, whether you're internal staff working in the office or a nurse/therapist/aide/social worker out in the field, has a certain requirement of daily duties. If you're looking for a paycheck without work, regardless of your department, you will burn out. You will hate your job. You will wonder "why did I even apply for this place?" When you get that call - that "we'd like to offer you a position within the company" call - know that you're signing up to WORK. You will be interacting with other staff on a regular basis. Depending on the position, you will be interacting with patients, their families, physicians, physician offices... you name it. The reward for your work is bountiful though. 

The organization does have discount programs and such. There's an employee discount available in the ADP portal for a membership at your local YMCA. There's also a discount for Verizon Wireless, if you're into that. 

After your first ninety days, you're eligible for a quarterly bonus for meeting certain productivity goals (they're called STEPS goals). That bonus is beautiful, and you really feel like you're doing something. For those of you who like to feel important and that you're useful, this organization is for you. For those of you who like to work, this organization is for you. 

I guess I'll make a little note about birthday cake... twice a month, we celebrate birthdays within the organization. We get a big cake delivered to the office and we all just pig out. Beware the freshman fifteen at ASHN.

I started out with a class of 7 and was put in a class with a new trainer that taught us nothing for the 5 days he had us. Got to week 2 and the new trainer Who they put me with crammed so much information in 5 days it was ridiculous. By week 3 I was running a mock team and still wasn’t even finish with training. Week 3 two more new trainees came in so my training was stopped so the trainer could focus on them. The trainer seemed like a good trainer until you asked to many questions. She was so harsh she made a grown woman cry in our class. I myself was let go because of this trainer for performance who didn’t know I was even a victim of domestic violence. Once I seen how mean and non caring she was to others life I chose to not share with her the horrible things I was going thru in my life. I took off one day from work because of the violence and was wrote up for performance when I wasn’t even done with training when I came back to work.  She treated me like an outcast because I spoke up about how horrible my training experience was. Every last one of the schedulers I was around complained all day about how stressful the job was wven the nurses complained. I never received a welcome aboard from any worker it was always good luck and negative basically warning me of the company. I watch nurses leave by the bulk. I could tell that my manager back was put against the wall about me and i was forced out the door instead of giving a chance or any support after I told the trainer and manager I had a horrible week at home and it was part of the reason I left the state I was living in. I actually contacted a lawyer because there are laws on employers treating domestic violence victims certain ways but I just let God deal with them and I’m Moving on. I don’t suggest this company to no one to work because they don’t care about your life only about you helping the company be successful. But without care to your employees work/life balance how can a company really be successful. The managers talk about other employees terribly and they are in cliques. The benefits and pay is horrible too. They make you do 10 jobs in one they should be paying at least 20$ an hr for the patient coordinator position. No overtime pay and you can’t start having 401k for a whole year. The trainer is single with no kids and none understanding at all to others feelings after being there for 10 years she should actually retire in a another profession that she wouldn’t directly deal with people. All she does is gossip and eat all day.... Run Run Run....

It is simply not possible for this company to value their employees any less.  They are all about hiring new grads who are heavily in debt and willing to do anything for a paycheck.  They are not above hiring employees who are on suspension or probation for unethical behavior.  Managers who promise bonuses and then find any way possible to not actually pay them.  They come into an agency right before Christmas, cut pay, cut seniority, offer horrific benefits that are unaffordable, offer next to no PTO and then act baffled that the employees aren’t grateful to them for “rescuing” the situation.  When they hire new employees they will promise them whatever territory they have to to get them in the door, shoving other employees to the side.  Do not accept a sign on bonus from these people.  It is like selling your soul to the devil.   Their rates are mediocre and you are lucky to meet your productivity as they Will overdraft to avoid paying bonuses.  If you don’t meet your productivity, you will not accrue the precious little PTO they offer and you will end up using your PTO to subsidize your income when you can’t meet their productivity.  This company is evil brilliance at its best.  They have figured out a way to make a ton of money while putting all of the risk and overhead costs on their employees.  Managers spend their days finding new ways to cut employees pay.  Then brainwash them into thinking they are the be all and end all of Homecare.  Work anywhere but here.  They are all about talking about how great they are but there is no quality of care.  You will not even know the people you work with or are expected to supervise.  There is no support, and it gradually gets worse.  And the quarterly bonuses are a joke.  The best day of my life was the day I handed in my pda!

This is a company that seems like a decent place to work initially. Benefits aren't horrible, PTO is reasonably generous (if you're allowed to use it), pay isn't BAD. You can tell there is a spirit of camaraderie within certain groups of people in the company, mostly between those who have worked for the company since the beginning. For those of us who aren't in that group, it can be difficult. Favoritism is a massive issue. Rules are not enforced fairly. Management picks and chooses when policies are convenient. If you suggest an area where something can be changed, you are either ignored or put on the black list. The people in the organization who should be reporting to the owners about the actual situation for the people in the office and in the field, in my opinion, shield them from information. As a result, the company is growing way too fast for what the current staff can withstand. I don't believe any departments or markets are sufficiently staffed, and those at the top continue to pursue additional joint ventures. This stretching of human resources leads to really, really poor patient care. It is a company that could be great, but is blindly managed. It's a very frustrating place to work. I would not recommend it.

If you aren’t apart of your managers “favorite groups” you are expected to perform above the normal standards in comparison to who are the favorites. You get no flexibility or exceptions. Don’t you dare out shine the favorites or you will be constantly under the microscope and they will find ways to make you look bad. Although the CEO is promoting change and a positive work environment in order to grow their company the buck stops there. Managers do not like the change, nor any ideas that doesn’t suit them best. They do not care about the majority of their employees and those employees are miserable, they stick around for the bonuses and good salaries. If you are brave enough to speak up and go to HR you will be blackmailed until you quit or they have grounds to fire you. The majority of the people I met with my same experience are amazing people and employees, working along side them was the best thing that came out of my time at ASHN. I strongly suggest that unless you are hired for a position in which you are a director or higher and you can make changes at the manager/ supervisor level do not consider this company it’s not worth the carrot that they dangle in front of you.

I'm proud to be a part of the Alternate Solutions Health Network Team.  Walking into a positive atmosphere every morning and working with people that are friendly, supportive and always willing to help with any issues or questions you may have is such a plus.   This leads to a work atmosphere you WANT to be a part of and excel in.    

Everyone has the same goal in mind and that is to take care of the customer first and foremost.   There is an excellent training process in place, your questions are always answered and you're made to feel comfortable quickly.   
     
When I first walked thru the door I had no intention of working again in the healthcare industry.  But, after a few months I KNEW I didn't want to leave!    I wanted to become a part of a company that is continually growing, shows support to their employees, contributes to the surrounding communities and has motivational supervisors, managers and directors in place.   I found that Alternate Solutions Health Network is an all-around great company to work for and I encourage you to make the decision to become a part of the team!  I'm glad I did!!!”

I have worked at ASH for 6 years internally. I feel that it is the best job I have ever had in my career.  No company is without its growing pains and missteps, especially at such a fast growing pace. But what I like about ASH is they want these pointed out so that they can work toward correcting them. The support and value as an employee I have received here has been wonderful. I understand that not everyone's experience will be great and that's ok - that's why you have the right to go somewhere else. 
I have many co-workers who have been here for 3+ years and still love it. I believe that means that there is a solid base of support, culture and compensation to have a numerous employees that do stay and invest their valuable time into this company.  
Leadership, directors and management support and value your input. Within every large company there are communication breakdowns, but you must also take an active role in that communication in order to be heard. 
I believe that my work makes a difference in our patients lives and that is the main goal.

First Job I ever walked in and quit without notice, hired for 30 visits a week, full time , 2 times in 6 months did I have 30 visits and they were so scattered from far west to southwest travelling 30 miles to the next patient, a lot of dummy visits they put patients on your PHONE that were non compliant not wanting homecare over and over The Manager was a PT no CLUE.... had absouletly no one to contact case mgr never answered TEXTS, no one to call period. Walked into a mess had this complicated electronic charting on a phone, schedulers were sarcastic, all their about is milking medicare not everyone needed a PT but they got one. I would not waste my time with this company unless you really like to travel I was told I had 17 Territories and still could not ever get 30 visits they will  wear and tear your car down and smug when questioning whats up ?hired full time?  No continunity never never could have the same patient they would give the visits to the RN , LPNs not treated same .they represent one the finest facilities, excellent MD's, should drop this group .

When I started here I was so stoked in the beginning. It was the beginning of Covid and they sent us home and this was my first wfh experience. I loved it. We have phone meeting when we needed to and when over reports, seemed very casual and typical. Then we got pulled into the office. It was clear our manager didn’t want us working from home and it was clear this is because she wanted to micromanage us. We were constantly understaffed and overworked. Expected to work OT to make up for that. 
Additionally when there is a survey asking about if there are improvements, be sure to not fill those out. You’ll be blindsided by the corporate VP and your boss into a meeting you didn’t consent to. You’ll also be expected to fix all your own problems. At that point your manager will single you out and start writing you up for literal nonsense. LETS NOT GET INTO THE FAVORITISM. Because that trumps all the work people actually do. I’ve worked in some terrible places with bad management and this is by far the worst. Top to bottom.
