Started off here as an RN who had no home health or hospice experience. They say that they "train" you. If "training," consists of online modules for hours on end or webinars, that is the bulk of your training. When going out in the field, the "territory," I was placed in evolved over time. Could drive up to an hour one way to see a patient and one hour back to my home. Was not practical with end of life patients. Shadowing other nurses for weeks, they called this "training." One nurse told me she had too large of a caseload to actually train me, so I was just going to just watch her. Bottom line....STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!! it isn't just lack of training that was my issue...it was long amounts of time spent in my car traveling throughout the day in various road conditions, frequent calls from the office/emails that needed answers on a daily basis, large caseloads, "territories" they "try" to keep you in, which doesn't apply because they will send you everywhere. I was actually transferred to another office closer to me in RI. This office, I encountered bullying/harassment from my immediate managers, having one of these "managers," go with me on a supervisory visit, even though he knew I needed additional training and decided to make a surprise visit at my facility and then proceed to insult my skills as a nurse and performance. I repeatedly was talked down to, by some members in management. I was not respected for being an RN and I had people from the office going to some of my facilities to double-check my work. They like to play the blame game on the nurse, when the facility is not happy for one reason or another. They also, take the facilities word over the nurse who is actually working out in the field. They do not trust the nurses judgement. They tried to tell me, that I "don't take this job seriously." All I would do was get bombarded all day with many issues, that were not nursing-related and all they did was in turn, tell me that  I wasn't seeing enough patients per day. When someone told me that this and I quote, "wasn't going to fly here." Very rude some of the office staff. They are not organized, even though they try to be. All they do all day is micromanage you to death. Very exhausting work mentally, between the dying patients and communicating with the office on a daily basis. The wear and tear on my vehicle is ridiculous, I have a crack in my windshield from hitting a pot hole in the road, I have a dent on the side of my car from rushing between patients, so that I would not be late. This job has no work-life balance, it literally never ends. I would still be making calls and working past 5pm, on a mostly daily basis. They want you to "chart at the bedside." It is almost impossible to do this,  when you have so much communicating to do throughout the day. If you actually do have a patient who is actively dying, good luck finding the time to see that patient, and the rest of your assignment for the day. I found the nursing aspect of the job to be quite sad, but manageable. The case management aspect of this job where I worked briefly in RI, was boarderline impossible to do successfully. This is by far the worst company that I have ever worked for as a nurse, and I have worked for some bad ones. I was asked while working for this company, to do some unethical things, like see patients who declined visits, order supplies that the "facility requested", even though the facility told me they never requested the items, they over order supplies in this company to make $$MONEY. Everything in this company, you will find is about $$MONEY. It isn't about terminal end of life care, that isn't of their concern. They do not care how good of a healthcare professional you are. It is totally a numbers/productivity game to them and getting positive reviews/comments on their survey. Well, I can't tell you how many times nurses were changed in the 6 months I was there, whether it was at a facility or in homecares. Consistency of care providers, is lacking here. Which, makes this confusing for patients and families. Advocate for your patients, terminal or not! Advocate for yourselves as a nurse! and don't let this company take advantage of you and burn you out! I was never told GOOD JOB here, but let me tell you, working here for the 6 months I did and being thrown practically to the wolves and surviving for the time that I did, guess what Amedisys...I DID A GREAT JOB! and moving on from this company, I have my life back and my sanity and I can provide good nursing care at a company that is deserving of the difference a nurse can make.

The documentation system called Oasis, is extremely cumbersome & redundant. Nurses spend many, many hours charting at home. Unfortunately, this system is required by the federal government. The orientation program is not that great. The day I started, my preceptor informed me that they had “X” number of days until retirement. I was also left in a conference room & forgotten about. The staff ordered lunch & didn’t include me, the person that was supposed to be training me that day, just left & no one bothered to check on me. When I came out to see what was going on, everyone was surprised that I was there. They are more interested in sending all the various specialty’s through the client’s home, despite the case manager’s recommendations. They do this so they can charge Medicare/medicaid/private insurance for the visit. Most patients really need help with bathing & other CNA type visits, but the Chester office, doesn’t have many CNAs and frankly doesn’t want to provide that type of care bc the reimbursement fee is not as high as a skilled visit. They also will send staff into the most disgusting/unsafe homes to obtain the reimbursement. They also direct the case manager RNs to get a person to accept visits, even if they don’t really need the services, especially patients with beautiful/clean homes with good insurance. The sad thing is that patients & families do not realize that there are other HH options in the area that could really give them what they really need. It’s sad how many elderly people are living in deplorable conditions that they cannot control & their family members really don’t care about them. When discussing this with management, although they do have a social worker, those services are also curtailed for a variety of reasons. If you have never worked in HH as an RN, here is the basic setup:  A dr’s office will send the office a referral. Then the office will determine if they can provide services & if they take the pts insurance. How about if they don’t take a certain insurance, as an example let’s just say Atena. They call the pts home & tells them, but they don’t inform the person of HH companies that may accept Atena. Anyway, a RN case manager is sent out to evaluate the situation.  Type of insurance, private or Medicare/medicaid will determine how many visits will be provided & the length of time the pt will seen. It is up to the RN to divide those visits up between the different specialties. Although they may only really need personal care help, Amedysis prefers that they get the “most bang for the proverbial buck”. As previously stated, skilled providers such as RNs, OTs, PTs & STs have a higher rate, so they really discourage CNA visits. Sigh. They also want each specialty professional to go into the home to also provide their own assessment, so again, Amedysis, can charge a higher rate for that visit, despite the RN Case Manager recommended. So in short, the insurance companies only allow a limited number of visits for a period of time, so those visits have to split up so they will bring in the most money. Also, if the RN Case manager determines that the home is dangerous or the pt is in danger they don’t care. If the RN wants to report the family to DSS, management provide NO guidance. They are told that “it’s up to you.” This area is so incredibly rural & has so much poverty that what Amedysis is willing to provide is not what the population really needs. The staff are incredibly caring, management is the problem. Also, the individual that sets the schedule has really no idea of the layout of the addresses and although staff can reorganize the weekly schedule, the office staff really have no clue what the professional staff is facing on a daily basis. 
However, if you choose to work there, make sure to get your day going as early as possible. Make sure you have plenty of car stock, you will work every other Saturday. Keep roach spray & dryer sheets in your car. If you are going into a house with bugs, spray your shoes prior to entering the house. If the house smells awful & is sticking to your clothes, rub the dryer sheet on your uniform. Also, keep extra clothes in your car in case you have to change clothes. 

Fast-paced environment, plenty of work/job security. Expectations too high for the pay. Self-training plan through online modules with a remote "mentor" to be used primarily for prepared questions or minimal remote meetings is not realistic. You will have to communicate your training needs to your local leadership and build your knowledge through other staff members, but still are required to do all the modules and mentor meetings, per the corporate training plan. Everyone has an assigned "workflow" with many recurring, redundant, micromanaging reminder tasks that further monopolize productivity and increase the likelihood of having to work overtime or face questioning as to why they are not done, even when the actual main task is done, and you have many other duties outside of the workflow task list. Mornings are always hectic up until lunch and then you have to coordinate lunch times to cover the phones. Most staff either skip or take a short lunch most of the time to try to minimize the afterhours overtime to be ready for the next day. There is no Receptionist or Administrative Assistant, so the phone rings and rolls like a call center, which makes it very difficult to get work done timely, and to concentrate, especially during daily meetings when staff have to constantly leave the meeting to answer calls, which prolongs meetings because everyone keeps having to leave and re-enter needing to catch up, or are not even listening because there is so much other work to do while the meetings drag out. Overtime is not asked/required, but pressure is ever-present, so almost everyone in most every role usually works overtime to meet the needs. Most staff are frequently overwhelmed and stressed. It is particularly difficult to have enough support at times when staff are out sick, on vacation or have to come in late or leave early for appointments or emergencies. Some overtime is very likely on Fridays to prep for the weekend on call team. Shockingly unprofessional behavior throughout all levels of the organization, especially when various issues arise; lots of blaming others instead of focusing on resolution and camaraderie.

Like so many previous Amedisys, Beacon Hospice (Boston), employees before me I can say that my experience with this company was one of the worst I have ever experienced as a clinician.
I was hired following the dispensation of 100% of their nursing staff. These talented RNs went on to work for other agencies in the Boston area.
Committed to doing Hospice Nursing, I was so excited when they hired me on the spot, that I failed to do my homework on the company's history of dissatisfied employees, legal issues,  poor management, and anemic patient census.
When they hired me, I was the only full time RN. The director hired a per diem nurse, who turned out to be her sister. The relationship between the two women was not revealed to myself, or other employees, for months.
I am a novice in hospice nursing. 
For my "training" I spent nearly 3 full weeks staring at a computer screen while I did module after module of their "on boarding". I was given NO preceptorship in the field. I was handed a nursing bag & a box of supplies for my trunk. The director assured me that if I had any questions I could call her for support.
At least 85% of the time she was unavailable for that "phone support" she had promised. Often calling back long after I had left the patient for whom I had the question.
After my first month of employment, there were many occasions when she failed to call back at all, although she would say "As you know, you are doing an awesome job!"
She counseled me to stop coming into the office in the morning, but instead to get right out and see patients.
This only made any access to her even more improbable.
I was attempting to provide care to patients in nursing homes with absolutely no previous experience in a facility.
This resulted in my failure to follow proper procedure in obtaining an MD order, and I was fired.
I was told there is "zero tolerance" for my mistake.
The director asked for my badge and nursing bag. She refused to take any of the medical supplies, that literally filled my trunk, saying "well, we can't take those back and use them". Making the disposal of hundreds of dollars worth of supplies my personal issue.
It was a nightmare.
I own the reality of my mistake, and for not following my hunch early on when I recognized the trouble the company was in. But I was so committed to hospice care that I hoped I would get my training wheels, and the company would begin to gain traction in the Boston market.
Not so.

I have been a clinician with an Amedisys branch full time since 2015. I had previously worked for the same care center part time and loved the company so much I came back full time. Initially I loved my time and was happy with my transition. Our agency had just been rated a top 100 care center. As a agency, the care center has slipped to a home care elite and will undoubtedly lose of consecutive string of recognition this year. Recently the turnover rate has increased at the care center and morale is down which is reflective of both the culture in the care center and the change in company direction. Our director has publicly challenged clinician assessments without ever seeing the patient all in favor of down scoring Oasis, something I consider to be fraudulent, but our Oasis reviewers have always sided with the clinicians. These challenges are often done publicly with assessments being criticized on a care center wide email, again without ever observing the patient. Since PDGM our productivity scale has changed, and was still attainable, but now the company policy is 90% completion of the documentation done in the home. Considering the documentation takes approximately 20 minutes to complete for a standard physical therapy treatment, and we spend 5 to 10 minutes getting subjective information, vital signs, and assessment of current medical conditions, this leave little time for treatment. Under PDGM the goal is to reward quality of care, but without quality treatment this is not possible, unless the company pressures clinicians to score patients at the start of care that is favorable for the company. This is exactly what has occurred. The direction has shifted from patient oriented treatment to paperwork completion and Oasis scoring driven by STAR ratings. Everyday on our "team driveway calls" the discussion is centered around how to score a patient to show improvements, as opposed to what the patient actually needs. I saw the writing on the wall back in November and I am so happy to have found a position for a not-for-profit healthcare company. Despite being one of the highest paying home care companies, no amount of reimbursement is worth risking my morals, ethical beliefs, and health care license to sign my name on a inaccurate assessment in favor of boosting the companies STAR ratings and revenue.

I felt the benefits were  an added value the pay was above average 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful aspect of working for this company is the constant pressure to prioritize census and numbers over patient care. Staffing shortages are ongoing, which makes it difficult to safely manage caseloads and provide the level of care hospice patients truly need. There is also a lack of clinical support, and concerns raised to management or HR are often ignored. This creates an environment where nurses feel unsupported and, at times, professionally at risk.

Another major stressor is seeing patients admitted with inadequate or questionable care plans, including cases that other hospice organizations have declined. This puts staff in difficult ethical and clinical situations while trying to advocate for appropriate patient care.



What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The workplace culture is best described as high-pressure and numbers-driven rather than supportive or collaborative. There is a noticeable lack of transparency, accountability, and respect for frontline staff. Frequent turnover contributes to instability within teams, making it difficult to build trust or maintain consistency in patient care.

Open communication is limited, and employees may feel discouraged from voicing concerns due to a lack of meaningful response or follow-up. Overall, the culture does not reflect the compassion and teamwork typically associated with hospice care.

Overall, my experience with this company has been disappointing. While I entered hospice care to provide compassionate, patient-centered support, the organization’s priorities appear to be driven more by business needs than by quality care. The Toms River office has high turnover, which reflects ongoing issues with management and workplace culture.

Leadership at both the local and upper levels lacks communication, accountability, and support for staff. Despite raising valid concerns, there is little to no follow-through or change. In my 20 years as a nurse and 10 years in hospice care, this has been one of the most poorly managed organizations I have worked for.

I would not recommend this company to nurses who value ethical practice, supportive leadership, and delivering meaningful hospice care.

Start day with a general idea of location, drive to/from/to/from and type of assigned appointment in the home of a clinical patient.  Every assigned appointment has a rating scale which corresponds to the expected goal of work output.  THIS is no way, shape or form has any attribute to a predicated time investment and is largely advantageous to the company at large to get more for their bang within their model of pay-per-visit model for in home clinicians.  Large mileage use of personal car without reimbursement other then pay per mile AFTER first visit to LAST visit.  IF one must drive TO their first visit say 30+ miles, this is NOT reimbursed.  This company pulls their data from their points and do not consider the overall investment of mileage, nor time, of a field clinician.  When completed for a days work, one should expect 2-4 hours of after hours in home work for completing required regulatory documentation which is time scrutinized by the local and regional staff.  The next day's assignment begins the day prior.  This  is NOT considered 'time on the clock' and is not considered 'payable/ billable' so, that's on the field clinician.  There will be many, many items of which this company and any/ most Home Health companies will require of a field clinician and will not to be called out  being advantageous to a field clinician's time and work mandates.  A field clinician will be taken advantage of for their morals and ethics.  This position is a vulnerable, highly autonomous and demanding role of regulatory expectation of professionalism.  And, even though this may be enough for many to be seen in these lights, this company and many like this company will take these highly sought out characteristic traits of a 'good and loyal employee' and take advantage of these same traits; and will scrutinize and refuse compensation of economics or a  consideration of human to human.  I would never recommend anyone taking a position within this company nor any company to this degree without having a lawyer look over your job responsibilities, and pay per visit pay model in relationship to time on the clock and expectations to be held during on the road travels.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I currently work as an Account Executive with Amedisys Home Health in Tucker, GA. This has been one of the most positive professional experiences of my career. Our leadership team is incredibly supportive, accessible, and genuinely invested in our success, which makes all difference day to day. Our operations team runs like a well oiled machine. There are so many checks and balances in place so we can prioritize patient care.

One thing that really stands out to me is how many employees I’ve met across,  all areas of the company who have left at some point — and then chosen to return. To me, that speaks volumes about the culture and how team members are valued.

The benefits are strong, but what truly sets Amedisys apart is the investment in training and development & opportunities for growth. The time and resources dedicated to educating us is truly unmatched.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My role revolves around meeting with local doctors, PA, NP’s, and medical staff to educate them on the services we provide and why referring patients to Amedisys helps patients live independently or with their care givers to improve their quality of life. I make calls, visit offices, rehab centers, assist patients to transition from being inpatient to independent.

It was a bumpy start at Amedisys however I stuck with it and I am glad I did.  I learned SO MUCH at this company and made some great friends.  Home Health is not easy, you do work hard and it can be very stressful if you have a large case load and a lot of driving.  The Medicare OASIS documentation done by the RN's is long and tedious and most companies say you need to get it done in the patients home, for a start of care/resumption of care/recertification this is not the reality nor does anyone want to sit and watch you document on their couch for 2 hours after you have provided the wound care/teaching etc... which takes time in and of itself.  Most at Amedisys do understand this though.  Once you have been in HH for a year it gets smoother and easier however, even seasoned and fast you end up documenting a lot at home after the visits and then have to call the days next patients to schedule them so it can and sometimes does really cut into your down time.  I was lucky to have great co-workers and a great clinical manager and my team was close and had each others back (RN, MSW, PT, OT, Psych RN, HHA).  I look back and know that this group of coworker was phenomenal and I have yet to experience that anywhere else.  Like all companies Amedisys has things to work on, but I can say that I look back so fondly on my time there.  The hours can be rough, and seeing a full day of patients then coming home to finish documenting then having to take turns being on call and working a weekend day as well as rotating holidays can be tiring.  This is pretty normal in HH so it's not just Amedisys.  Overall it was such a good experience.  Just be aware that HH can be really hard and you need a really good preceptor if you are new to HH!

Many of the cons come from having to adhere to the absolute ridiculous Medicare (CMS) standards and are not necessarily reflective of Amedisys.  

The opportunity to get to know your patient and really help them is there all day long. Most patients and families are so happy that you are there to help which is rewarding. Occasionally you get that patient that thinks they were ordered home health by their physician as punishment and they can take a little time to come around but I enjoy a challenge… The big problem with the work atmosphere at Amedisys is a very poor training program or shall I say lack there of. My training consisted of sitting in front of a computer completing so many training modules, then a short time talking to someone who basically takes care of payroll as well as many other things, a short visit with a PT, an OT, and the Social Worker. The following week (this would be the third or fourth week) I was assigned to do ride alongs with another RN who wasn’t even a permanent employee but a temporary nurse… I learned from her how to get into the computer (Samsung tablet) that visits are done on, how to complete an admission, a recertification, an evaluation,and a resumption of care. 

The things I was not trained on were very important omissions… To include how the pay worked with number of hours and number of visits. Mileage reimbursement. The fact that you have to manage your own non productive hours, and if you want to use PTO after it’s approved you have to add it to your time, as well as adding your time for on call ext. Basically it’s kinda like you’re self employed and you keep up with everything. Yet you aren’t shown that during the orientation process. The compensation for the amount of work you do is not worth it… The bottom line is that they seriously need to work on a training program in which the employee learns precisely how to be successful in this area… I feel like I was bound to fail due to not enough training…

I was told that home health nursing is a way of life… Ok but some of us just want a job in which we enjoy and can make a decent paycheck … It is very difficult to be successful when you feel like you don’t know enough about how the process works…
