The owner has little respect for anyone that isnt his jeweler or a manager/ manager in training. He personally embarrassed and verbally attacked me in front of colleagues and customers because I disagreed with a policy that could possible make me responsible for managers' mistakes (I wasnt a manager, although I did managerial duties). After the scene in front of the customers he took me back to his office to further verbally attack me at which point I put in my 2 weeks notice and he sent me home that instant, not granting me the 2 weeks. Les Gold will push you to choose between simple respect and common decency or a job and although he emphasizes having his employees backs as one of his greatest core values it is sadly the one put into practice the LEAST. The truth is, I LOVED working here, the experience, the customers, and the knowledge was great, even if the pay wasn't. As it turns out, unfortunately, the owner is petty, low, and fake. He could get away with talking to me any way inside his building, but the least I could is write this review! So if you happen to join the AJL team, don't get me wrong, my coworkers were AMAZING! But the turnover rate at AJL is POOR for a reason: Les Gold himself. So learn what you can and MOVE ON. If you feel like you're being picked at or targeted, then you are and its time to MOVE ON!

After only working with American Jewelry & Loan for less than 5 months, I felt compelled to leave a review.

It has been years since I've worked with owners that honestly care for their team members and the customers they serve - it's refreshing. Les and Seth Gold are not people that sit in their offices and bark orders or constantly check sales.  They are in the thick of the business every day greeting customers, helping with transactions and taking pictures when requested.  Because of the success of the show, they understand the microscope they're under and toil relentlessly to ensure that things are done right.  

Thousands of people depend on AJ&L on a daily basis - a fact that the entire team takes seriously.  They aspire to be kind and to work with each customer to ensure complete satisfaction.  

I've enjoyed watching the different personalities from all departments interact and form strong bonds during the work day. There's a sense of family and togetherness....which is why some people have worked here for almost two decades.  

I'm looking forward to seeing where this journey leads. For now, it's been a great ride.

You're made big promises, sold a bunch of dreams and none of it is true. The training is garbage, employees are taught nothing, most of the staff isn't knowledgeable,it's just trash. It's a flailing business, disrespectful management, inconsistent operations, illegal practices and overall a terrible place to work. The "boy's club" there sees the employees and customers as scum, they pay isn't worth the effort the want from you. Have an opinion? You're wrong. Accomplished your task? What about the 43 other ones no one told you about? Don't let the TV show fool you. This place is a cesspool of dysfunction, filth, roaches and overall unprofessional-ism. You can't afford the benefits so don't bother looking at them. The management will belittle you and make you hate it here. All in all, unless you're in desperate need of a check every 2 weeks, keep it moving.

Family oriented staff!! Along with helping
customers when they need it most.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not knowing where you stand in the company.. The communication of this business is very poor ..

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful there is a condescending manger who can’t think or make decisions on his own. The staff keeps this business going. Day to day interactions would not exist if it wasn’t for tenured employees. 


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Slow paced but can be steady! This business has been around for decades! The Operations manager is out of touch with the entire staff and clientele.

Having been employed with American Jewelry and Loan for several years I can say that having the ability to talk with the owner one on one is definitely a huge plus.  With expansion happening all the time, being able to advance as you learn is definitely possible. Almost every day something exciting happens!  They have always been very accommodating to my needs as a working parent, and had my back when I have needed help in my personal life as well.  I have learned so much working here over the the years.   Be willing to learn and work hard, and you will be successful!


A type day at this place is Hectic. I don't know if there is so many problems in the business because of the type of business there of but it needs more structure. They don't seem to want to change anything for the better and continue to blame others.  The hardest part about the job I would say is moving at a extremely fast pace with zero mistakes. I enjoyed the customers some come frequently and are a  pleasure to speak with. The owner is also an Awesome Guy !

I have worked a few place throughout metro Detroit and by far a great job. Each day is different and exciting in its own way. This job keeps you on your toes and is never dull. Each day brings new challenges. This job challenges you to grow each day.  Working with the top Pawn brokers/managers is the country is a blessing. Everyone is happy to teach and even learn with you sometimes. You get to meet the most interesting people from all over.  Must be able to multi task and prioritize in a fast pace environment. 

I love working here. The job is challenging, and each day is full of new things to learn. Leadership is patient and takes time to teach you what you need to know to be successful and feel confident. The compensation is really good, and they do offer benefits and a 401K. There are also plenty of opportunities for growth and career advancement.  I'm very happy at AJL, and I encourage you to apply soon. 

Working here was probably my most interesting experience and it's not a terrible job. If you do good then you'll likely recieve a raise. The problem is with the owners and their sporadic approaches. You could see a co l-worker fired for no reason and now you have to do their job and yours. 

The owners are genuinely nice and truly care about their employees.  Mgmt is helpful and wants to see you succeed within the company. Everyone is one big team and if you need training or have questions, most all of the employees are ready and willing to help you learn and feel apart of the AJL Team. Great job. Easy tasks. In-house training. You’ll feel accomplished by the end of the day and enjoy going back to work the next day
