A very old and complacent technology team more interested in doing what they did yesterday than in advancing tech or even permanent and long-term solutions.

Tech decision are handed down from the top and strictly enforced so there is very little room to try new tech, regardless of the fact that you'll be encouraged to do so at every turn 

Any effort to simplify processes and technology, or even expect a reasonable turnaround time on even the simplest support tickets will only get you blacklisted by a small army of unapologetically neurotic greybeard lifers whose entire approach to technology is characterized more by statements like "it is what it is" and "better safe than sorry", sounding more like my grandmother's fear of the internet than by any modern approach to technology.

Management at all levels is very entrenched in culture and almost completely clueless at all levels, seemingly more interested in stroking their egos and maintaining business-as-usual, fully leveraging the organization's "waterfall" process and overt tendency to gratify seniority in management. Seniority in engineering only means that you've been there longer. You're not expected to actually know about the technology beyond how it is that the last engineer there got it working.

I enjoyed 26 years of employment with the American Medical Association. a typical day at work would be to start the daily backup jobs, monitor and correct errors. Print the output for users.
and deliver all printed output to the users. I learned to be professional, dependable, all aspects of being a computer operator.

I loved the holiday parties, anniversary luncheons given to employees starting with your 5 year anniversary date. The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to be secure knowing you had a career as long as you were willing to do your job with the utmost degree of professionalism.

A typical day at work is completing each task at the time specified
I learned a lot about the postage machines but was not able to use them because of my current position. The management was okay but can do much better at being in-tuned with the staff. Co-workers are good workers and great team players. The hardest part of the job is that the supervisors were not very good at handling situations. The best part of the job was the benefits and working with the co-workers learning different things at the job.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I enjoyed the group I worked with and the variety of my work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management often micromanages which delays processes.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Mostly collaborative, however the hierarchy can be too sterile and unaproachable.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy, you have to be able to adjust quickly

Long-term employees have a way of derailing progress and isolating new talent. Most turnover has to do with poor management who allow the veteran AMAites to “rule,” especially in MMX where things have really gotten out of hand. People blame one another for numbers being down, finger pointing, employees clawing their way through the day and tossing one another under the bus to survive. VPs often support and reward this type of behavior, eSpecially if said VP has been around a while, too. 

The mast has snapped off, the rudder is broken, the captain is insane but the ship is still floating. That is the AMA in a nutshell. Once called the worst lobbying outfit in the history of lobbying, there is a reason for that. But the pay is great and the hours are easy. So if you just want to keep your head down and get a paycheck until the next round of random layoffs, it works well. Just dont work for the empty suit doing PAC fundraising.

It took me 20 years but I found my dream job in my dream organization.  I am supported, encouraged, and energized every day. And I laugh a lot.  I see this on my team and on teams around the organization - -it is woven in the culture.  And as a medical association we have a strong sense of purpose!  Doesn't get any better.

Management changes often but many people have been there for a very long time. People and systems are good to work with. Non profit means not a lot of pressure to compete but since its such a big non profit, it doesn't deal with the shoestring budgets a lot of other non profits have to deal with.

This job is secure, and the pay is good (not great) however, I find that flexibility is limited. 
While this would be a great place for a single person, it it difficult for those who have a family. I don't get to spend much time with my young child, and I wish I could. I wish I had the flexibility to work from home at least one day a week, but  it is not allowed.

Depending on your career ambitions and whether you are comfortible working for an Association (they have generally different goals than a for profit company).  Then I think the AMA is a good place to work.  If you are looking for a competitive career you may find the AMA less challenging than you would like.
