I mainly worked on the Tele/Oncology floor. Staffing ratio was fantastic. I made $35 an hour as an almost 1 year nurse. I worked nightshift so I made $5 more for nights and Weekends were another $2-3 an hour. They had lunch break nurses and if they didn't have one you could would be paid your salary for that 30 minutes extra. Management was competent, if not a little robotic. Not entirely "human", but acted appropriately if not robotic in mannerisms. Honestly a great manager though, she inspired a lot of confidence, and just talking to her made you understand that she was SEASONED! (She would have you covered and would help you in any way possible - she even tried to help me / educate me on becoming an Infusion certified RN) The rest of the staff? Amazing. Charge nurses were awesome / amazing / knowledgeable / capable / helpful … everything. Staff was amazing and helpful. No favoritism or neglect. I felt safe / secure / helped / everyone had my back / … I just felt well looked after. No "Clicks?" … is that the right word? All the nurse were cool and looked out for each other. We were a UNIT! Other may have some negative things to say … to each their own. But I had an amazing experience. I'm not super attractive, or epic people skills (everyone loves me / life of the party) so really there is no reason they were so great to work with except that they were really good and nice people. I truly miss working there. BUT if you know the area then you know it's pretty sketchy … 1 giant ghetto. Only left because I wanted to raise my kids in a safer area. Also it's CA = strong union and I got like 1.5 to 3 months of 67% of my salary paid paternity FMLA. Amazing.

Arrive 2 work and organize my delivery packages that had already been delivered, stack my packages up neatly on cart, deliver items to hospital departments along with getting a signature upon delivery, return back to warehouse and check printer for any as needed orders request from hospital units, charge out all requested orders that come in by phone, printer, or walk in. Make special orthodic braces or equipment needed orders from outside vendors for patients after surgery or emergency. There is no specific or particular job function with all i have done, because there are many different things needed in a hospital facility and every situation varies on the condition of the patient, but my always concerns distribution and thing needed to treat patients needs. The hardest part of my job was not getting the approval from management to order a non-stock item that a Physician personally requested, but I tried my best. What i enjoyed the most about my job was when i did not know what an item was but knew what it was for and had to research it, find it, and deliver it. So this allowed me to learn gain knowledge of what it was, how it was used, what it was for. It also provided for the patient and was pleasing to the Dr. for going out of my way.

The employee health, human resources, and other essentials are all outsourced from the hospital to secondary and tertiary companies. If you ever get hurt or exposed to something that makes you terribly sick, you have to jump through so many hoops for each company just for the hospital to recognize that you were really hurt or sick. But once the hospital recognizes the incident as detrimental to you, almost everything is paid for outside of required insurance co-pays.

It is very hard to advance yourself in the hospital. You can move sideways into comparable positions to what you already have, But you have to have the hand of God working for you to be able to move even one step forward regardless of your education or experience

Most equipment in the hospital is, at its newest, 20 years old. Everything is breaking down. However, the nurses, nurse techs, doctors and all support staff are phenomenal. You won't find a better group of people to work with or for. You will work with true exceptionalism, even while the hospital crumbles around you.

Te executive team is going through some changes, and that effect is being felt throughout the hospital, but there is faith that the organization will become stronger when finished.

I'm someone passionate about technology, built my own PCs for years. However, I get treated horribly by management while a coworker who clearly doesn't even like working in IT gets special treatment. She outright stated that she hates IT work, but management bends over backwards to appease her while chastising me for simple mistakes. Also, management and the employees have lunch together and post pictures on Facebook where they're going out having drinks. This doesn't motivate someone to work hard. The amount of collusion and favoritism within IT is outright disgusting. We can impeach a president over collusion with foreign countries, but not investigate a department within a hospital over this. That makes no sense to me whatsoever. 

Maybe they did me a favor by firing me, because this was a toxic work environment. AV Hospital should outright fire IT management and hire a team who's more concerned with functionality rather than being BFFs.

Speaking of which, Cerner is garbage software and has been the source of many a painful phone call. It's not intuitive, it crashes a lot, and it holds up patient care. I'll never understand why this horrible software was chosen over Epic which is superior in every way.

I had the opportunity to work as a nursing student on many of the units at Antelope Valley Hospital. We spent 8 weeks on each of the following units: Med/Surg, Pediatrics, OB, Mental Health, CCU, and PCU. The appearance of the hospital could use a little love but the staff who work inside those doors are absolutely wonderful.

I also got to spend some time in the ED during my summer preceptorship. The nurses in the ED are dedicated and determined. The ED is often overcrowded - meaning  that sometimes the waiting rooms are full at the same time there is a line of ambulances out the back entrance, while patients line the halls in gurneys. As a student feeling a bit lost in the chaos, I was led by a few phenomenal ED RN's who did not hold my hand nor leave me hanging off their coattails. I was able to assist in multiple trauma intakes and a code blue. After watching the care and passion present in this department, I would trust these people to care for my family and friends. 

I must add, the stuffed portobello mushroom in the cafeteria is pretty delicious too.

This is a very bad place to work as an RN.  You get tons of experience because of all the shortcomings this hospital has.  You don't realize how bad it is here until you go somewhere else.   At this hospital when I was there we rarely had break RNs or a charge RN.  No one is willing to pick up extra because it doesn't pay well and RNs are treated like dog excrement.  Doctors dont answer their phones, they dont put in their orders, you have to remind them about critical labs and they dont care about patients.  They try to speed discharge patients when they are not ready to go, and guess what? They come back!!!   The managers here are a joke they manage like 3 floors each and their best interest is the CEO, not their staff.    AVH would retain staff and people would work extra if they paid better and had resources for nurses.  I'm so thankful for the experience but my new job is less stressful, pays better and has the adequate resources.

Constant change in CEO's with layoffs each time.  Especially affected were long term employees who made more money than new hires that replaced us. Cut throat management that did lay offs so they could continue to receive their overpaid wages.  No recognition for continued loyalty. An attitude of if you don't like something, go ahead, quit we can replace you and you can commute else where. Atmosphere was very tense, poor morale and actually not a safe environment for the patient. Staff tried very hard to do their best but were constantly understaffed due to "loopholes". Emergency room doctors that chose the quickest way to discharge, often missing a vital diagnosis.  Human Resources is absolutely not on the employee's side.  You could not go to them with a problem with management.  Retaliation is common and personal.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The staff in their ICU step down is wonderful. I have never gone out of ratio. And the people are usually nice. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The pay is way too low. For being in the Los Angeles area it is WAY too low. RNs should be making way more in LA County considering the cost of living. The patient acuity is extremely high. Feels like a lot of the patients are in very bad shape when they come in.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The night shift staff in their ICU step down is wonderful and very helpful. As for the rest of the hospital they needs to fix their attitudes. Not very welcoming on the towers or their ICU. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Some days are way more stressful than others. Always on your toes and always have to keep a very close eye on the patients.

Very repetitive, we are constantly moving and walk several miles a day, involed a lot of lifting people in and out of bed. We work side by side with the nurses on a regular basis and I was able to learn a lot from them. Overall my Co-Workers were wonderful! Every job is going to have someone that you dont really care for, but I really didn't find too many. The hardest part of my job is all the walking and lifting. We typically walk up to 10 miles a day and have to be able to assist in lifting patients of all sizes. The most enjoyable part of my job is meeting new people. Being in my department most of the staff know you and a lot of the patients get to know you by the end of their stay.

- I continue to learn every day there and the biggest thing I have learned is team work.
- My co-workers are my support and my second family. Very good positive trustworthy people.
- The hardest part of the job would have to be going home at the end of the day as I want to stay and continue to help and care for my patients.
-What I enjoy the most about my job is to hear my patients compliment me on the care I give. it is rewarding to see my patients improve. Patients are my number one concern and priority always.
