Apple Rehab

I have only been at Apple Rehab of Farmington Valley for a few months. In my short time administration has turned over and NOT for the better! My first month here was great until the old administrator left. Staff morale has gone down. I’m a firm believer in a work place and its employees is only as good as its management and management seems to not care at all. Constantly working short staffed for the amount of patients which is a safety issue. Staff can not give proper care due to understaffing. Constructive criticism and suggestions on how to improve flaws go on heard and taken as an insult rather than good. There seems to be a lot of entitlement for people who do not deserve it. Those that try to make the work place better and more cohesive are ignored and under minded because they don’t hold a certain title after their name. There’s a lot of “that’s not my job or it’s not in my scope of practice attitude” in this building. Supervision from supervisors is none existent due to the fact that they have to wear many hats and unable to effectively do their job. There are more times then not that a unit will be only staff with one CNA to 25+ patients and at times only one nurse as well. It seems to be the “norm” to not do certain tasks/duties because of inadequate staffing which hinder care. It has really become a hostile work environment at times. Management is suppose to lead by example and the example you get is them talking about other staff member out in the open, making statements such as “I’m done and I don’t care what is left to do.” Or you have certain “supervisors” who hide in the office while their units are in shambles. 

First, I am sorry for the negative post, but I need to share this...I want to warn you all that if you have any elderly loved ones in an APPLE CARE facility, it is in your best interest to find a safer place for them to be cared for.

I taught yoga at two of their facilities from November - March and was SHOCKED.

In the short time that I was there, I witnessed a number of staff changes. A putrid odor of urine, feces, and bleach (so much so that I had difficulty breathing). Patients left out alone in the middle of the hallways having panic attacks. Some of the staff that I interacted with were extremely rude, not just to me, but to the patients as well. Telling them to "shut up."

After sharing my experience with a few people, I have also heard other's horror stories about their negative experiences with Apple Rehab (Like staff refusing to change patients after they wet themselves). I also have a friend who works there and has shared with me how cheap and understaffed they are.

I want everyone to be aware of what kind of care is provided.

I do not want to blame all the staff because some of them are good and actually do care, but it seems that the people at the top do not have the best character. 

Apple Rehab hired me to teach Chair Yoga and has not paid me a dime. The staff kept telling me that it takes a while for them to process my invoice, but after 4 months of no pay it looks like they just took complete advantage of me.

The residents there are so sweet and I worry for them.

Working here for almost three years I learned how to improve my skills as a nursing aid, how to communicate and have patience with certain residents that needed extra communication. I worked on each shift and learned the different responsibilities for each shift. A typical day at work for 2nd shift started with clocking in, going to the nurses desk to write my list of residents to take care of for my shift, then starting by passing out linens and getting residents up and changed for dinner, answering call bells and then getting them all ready for bed. At the end and during the shift we could use the smart computers attached to the walls to record important information for each resident. On third shift I was responsible for doing two sets of rounds while patients were asleep, stalking items and helping the nurses with filing. I learned many things from each co workers and their pointers on how to get the job done to the best abilities. The hardest part of my job had to be learning how to communicate and have patience for those with special needs such as dementia or antimeres. The most enjoyable would be making my residents smile and helping them with every need that they needed done. Nothing inside feels better than giving back to the elderly and hearing there wonderful stories about how they grew up.

I work a typical 11pm-7am shift that includes no more than 30 residents on my assignment. I answer call bells, complete vital signs, perform basic care needs, assist with ambulation as needed, report any changes in mental and health status to the nurse in charge, record intake and output, chart overall resident status and assist nurse as needed with residents. I have learned time management as seeing I am the only aide responsible for a large group of residents on my shift, I have also learned how to prioritize based on the need of the each resident. In total I work with 3 other staff members which is a small number but it works well throughout the night. We each actively stay busy and we learn how to work together and effectively communicate as needed. The hardest part of my job would have to be learning how to stretch myself thin at times with the residents. Sometimes 5 people want you at the same time and you have to learn how to adjust to each residents need as you come across them. The most enjoyable part of my job is getting to spend a bit more time with my residents opposed to other shifts, which lets me bond a bit more with them on a different level.

The whole place was pretty disorganized. Care plan cards weren’t updated. It was hard to find what you needed for supplies sometimes. Constantly understaffed and the nurse in the back unit was expected to finish both med passes and then leave the floor to do another med pass elsewhere. It was impossible to do ghat while actually keeping with the “within 1 hour” rule of med administration. Not great training/orientation on the floor (although the sit-down orientation day was informative). They throw you to the wolves by putting you on a cart by yourself on a new unit your second day of orientation (that day there also happened to be a new supervisor, so neither of us really knew what we were doing). The staff seemed to care and management was friendly and tried to be helpful, but it seemed they had to just make the best of what they were given, which seemed to be a very small budget from corporate who just looked at the number of residents on an assignment and not their actual care or needs. It was too much. They said you “had to take your break,” but there was no chance to actually do so. At least meal breaks were paid.

I love being a CNA, but had to quit working here after 5 months. The lack of communication and amount of stress I experience at this job were just to much. 

I worked part time, 3 days a week at this facility. 

There is no teamwork at this facility. 

The regular nurses and supervisors, with the exception of one nurse who was excellent, refuse to listen to the CNAs concerns about residents or answer call bells when the CNAs are busy with other residents. 

When you bring problems to their attention and provide a solution to the problem, you are not heard and nothing changes. 

I was expected to consistently have the split assignment which consisted of me working on both the rehab and long term sides of the building and having 20 people on long term care and 13 people on rehab and a total of 11 changes/people to toilet on rehab and 10 changes on long term for a total of 21 changes 3 x a night while the other aides had between 12-14 changes. 

If you like killing yourself for to little money, the workload not being split evenly among all the CNAs, and being micromanaged, this place is for you. 



Assignments some are harder then others some may be easy it’s the most friendliest place I’ve been and helpful place I’ve been they also show appreciation to all staff and have a bunch of different free food days where they offer tacos or cheesecake or pizza free ice cream truck when they want but they have done it more then most places I’ve been ever have done since I’ve been there no rats pay is higher then a lot of assisted living nursing homes for starting rate it’s just a matter of sometimes dealing with having a easy day or a rough one depending on assignment and residents u have 

Working at Apple Rehab Watch Hill, was an actual nightmare. The administrator is a liar, corporate office offers no support, and has no regard for anyone’s license, or the residents they cannot care for. Constantly short staffed. Often you would be scheduled for 3-11 and there would not be an 11-7 nurse scheduled. Second shift has only had one CNA for the past two years. Weekends plan on being there at least 16 hrs. Overtime was rarely paid, to be reimbursed whatever pay you were shorted would take weeks of back and forth calls to corporate. Corporates response is always prove that we we you! Vacation is rarely approved, and employees are not reimbursed the hours they have earned. Covid bonuses funded by the government never actually reached the employee’s,    funding for staff appreciation, god only  knows where that went. PPE and nursing supplies are sparse. It’s shocking they have managed to hold on to their one star. It’s only a matter of time before DPH closes the doors! 

This was one of the worst nursing facilities I have ever worked at. The Administrator/HR does not care about his employees. Tries to guilt trip CNA’s into working double shifts and talks down to them if they don’t. They only like you if you can help them if not, they could care less about you. Employees kind of do what they want there and only certain ones get disciplinary actions. They are extremely understaffed. The facility is practically run by agency and it’s not their fault that they don’t know what they are doing because there is no permanent staff to help them. The pay isn’t that good they say it is up to $26 an hour but thats if you pick up a shift you get an extra five dollars an hour possibly bringing you up to that $26 an hour.  Realistically, your hourly rate is anywhere from $18-$21. You only get the five dollar bonus after working there for three months so if you pick up a shift before then you won’t get that bonus. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
If I must say something I'll say the work flexibility is the best thing. However, I'm aware that it's because there's plenty of availability. Not too many ppl stay once hired. The staff that's been there for years is very rude.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part for me was dealing with the attitudes of the workers. This includes management. In an environment that required so much hands on care, lots of the staff seemed really non chalant about things that truly should matter.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment seemed hostile a lot. The aides and nurses punched in and began complaining about everything almost every morning.  Lots of workers there that don't like each other. Some are bullies.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day there was very busy. Most of the London term and rehab residents have a lot of physical needs.
