A typical day started by initiating the schedule along with occupational therapy team members to ensure all patients would be seen and that assignments were equally divided. Also, would plan and schedule co-treatments with PT staff. Flexibility was a vital part throughout the day due to the unavailability of patients for a variety of reasons including tests, inability to tolerate at the time due to critical illness or just being asleep. I learned a great deal about working around critical care lines while treating a variety of patients on the rehab, burn, infant/toddler, neonatal, cardiac, and intensive care units. I gained skills in providing therapeutic feeds, oral stimulation techniques, therapeutic activities for developmentally delayed infants/toddlers due to being vent dependent, PROM techniques for severe burn victims, and aquatic activities. I worked with a great staff of caring, compassionate and fun therapists who were very engaged in providing the highest quality of care while making the therapy session entertaining and fun when needed. Management was very supportive in offering advice assistance. Frequent in-services were provided for continuing education through staff participation. You were required to provide two in-services per year. The most difficult aspect of my job was when a child died. The most enjoyable experience was seeing a child smile and the joy of seeing them achieve developmental milestones and regain their health.

I spent almost 10 years in this organization with a complete administration change and mission change occurring during my tenure. While the new mission drives all that occurs within the company, there are those who take it to extremes. 

My unit experience was amazing in the beginning I felt heard, valued, appreciated and an asset to the company. After a new director was hired in my unit, all of that changed. It is now an arena filled with favoritism/cronyism, double talk and politics not conducive to positive staff morale. Even though staff are given the opportunity to voice opinions on actions that would directly affect patient care, opinions and concerns go largely ignored. Staff feel unheard, undervalued and easily replaceable as a result.

The majority of my coworkers are amazing individuals who are passionate and driven to care for our patient population. They make difficult shifts better and offer support through true teamwork. I have made some very amazing friends here and will value them as I move forward. They are the most enjoyable part of the job. 

I'm very aware that my experience is limited to the unit that I was employed in and the director of that unit. I know that others have not had these experiences or feel that they are undervalued or unappreciated. As a whole, the organization is wonderful and there are a myriad of opportunities to experience different types of nursing within its walls.

It's entirely cutthroat as far as staffing. The staff is being stretched to unsafe limits and it's becoming like all the surrounding hospitals staff to patient ratios. When I first started the RNs were allowed a max of 4 patients but usually they tried to keep it down to 3. Before leaving it wasn't uncommon for them to have up to 6 patients pushed on them. And it is all closely managed so that after the daily census goes in (at midnight) that's when they will start pushing patients up to the units. So patients who have been in the ER as long as 12 hours sometimes would be pushed up to units and a lot of times it wasn't just 1 or 2, but more like 4-6 and they would try to bring back to back. I loved this place for the first 2 years I was there but then the 2 years after that is when changes were really starting and it's been a consistent chain of bad decisions and constant switching of roles in management. I understand having opportunity for advancement but there should also be a limit of time before someon can change roles. It's all too much when also taking in the considerations of the house wide changes that occur.

Arkansas Children's Hospital was a phenomenal hospital that provided superb services and care for their patients and families. As a child life intern, I witnessed the effectiveness of the child life and education services, trained volunteers, made assessments, completed case studies, and encouraged age and developmentally appropriate play for the patients I served. These experiences furthered my ability to manage my time and prioritize my cases. I easily engaged in conversation and collaborated with my co-workers. We made a great team. The most challenging part of my job was not being able to serve every single patient and family that could benefit from child life services. The most enjoyable parts of my job were being the reason for a patient or family members smile and being able to make a difference in the lives of various people.

Culture greatly varies by unit.  My floor was overall very supportive. Patient to nurse ratio is low (4 max on med surge unless drastic issue which I never experienced). Best part is working with kids; hardest part is working with kids. They are fun but also require extra support for many procedures due to fear levels, emotional outbursts, etc. ACH has continual online trainings. You will always have work to do outside of your patient load. Day positions are difficult to come by. They offer self-scheduling but it is rarely left greatly unaltered by scheduler. I always had the supplies that I needed. Overall clean and organized unit. If you are looking for career advancement, ACH is an ideal hospital for that. The organization wants you to continually be advancing and offer many opportunities to continue your education. 

I am so blessed to be a part of the ACH team. I have worked in the PACU since June 2007. I have learned and grown in so many ways since I first began. I started off with no hospital or medical experience but I was given the opportunity to join the ACH  team.I got hired on as a Patient Care Tech in the PACU. Some of my first duties were to learn the routine and flow of the patients, and learn how to properly assist the nurses and patients. I will never forget how many screaming and crying kids I seen that day! I really didn’t understand why they were screaming and crying like they were but, it didn’t take long for me to get comfortable and knowledgeable in my position and understand why.It’s been eight years since I started at ACH. Many employees have come and gone since I started in 2007, but I can honestly say I have learned something from each and every one of them. I am very thankful.

It is a steady-pace work environment, divided into four stations.  Unit dose, Oral liquids, IV fluids and Stat.  The unit dose area is consist of the tablets, pre-filled syringes and whole vials.  The oral liquid is consisted of liquid medications that you fill with an oral syringe.  IV medications are specially prepared in the cleaning room in a laminar hood, using aseptic techniques.  and the Stat area is the area that prepare the drug that are needed by the patient right away.  sometimes they will send drips to the floor and the patient.    I learned so much about the hospital setup, and the role of the pharmacy in a hospital setting.  I especially love working in the cleaning room, preparing IV injections.  The biggest issue with the job is management.  Management is not organized enough and doesn't not respect the cultural expectations in a work environment to take matters on it certain issues.

Productive and fast pace environment. Effective communication with Social Workers, Doctors and Nurses as well and other vital team members that have a role in the Social Work/Emergency Dept. What I have learned in this role is the true meaning "patience". I work without  supervision, so I am a self starter and depend on my own judgement to make decisions that are best for our families. I respect and value my co-workers because I know that it takes all of us to make a team and do our jobs effectively. The hardest part of my job is seeing the hardship families encounter when dealing with sickness and or the loss of their child. The most enjoyable part of my job is feeling rewarded when I have made a positive impact on patients and families during their time at ACH.

A typical day on this job was a challenge, but yet so very rewarding.  The hardest part of this job was not being able to bring the parents into the picture in order to provide the best care for the child/children.   I feel that management gave it their all in all best care and attention to make the job enjoyable and provide a pleasant environment by keep making sure their employees were informed of company policies and ensuring that the workplace culture was in proper alignment with the company goals for the well-being of their employees.  While working there, I became a stronger team player and learned how to work smarter, which has enhanced or sharpened my work ethics.  

While the opportunity to gain experience in a medical teaching environment is rich, the culture of the hospital has suffered under a change of CEO. Employees are more regimented and support  staff and services are reduced. Many nurses and physicians, and other employees. that had a long association with the hospital have left, as the care environment of this non-profit organization has become more like a for profit organization.The organization is top heavy with administrators, building elegant but unnecessary expensive buildings, and fewer dollars spent on care of patients and nurturing and empowering front line staff.
