Most frontline staff are passionate and caring. The doctors are great and excel at what they do. It is a smaller hospital setting which is nice - less layers of red tape to go through. There is unfortunately, no support and many tactics and strategies are not thought out or planned with the teams in mind. Many things are based on whims and lack strategic direction. They expect much and give little resources to get the job done. You are doing more with less. The infrastructure is old and outdated. From their budgeting system to their emr systems to their computers and phones and patient buildings/rooms. Many best practices have not been adopted due to many years of financial constraints due to poor design and decision and it shows. Multiple wage freezes and lay offs - except for executive level which got any pay that originally taken away give  back to them, while front line did not. Nurses do receive their increases but are overworked. Very self interested and not for the people. Lots of talk but no action. Further, there is no room for growth in a career as a mid level manager. Also, the more successful you are at completing projects/implementing tactics the more work and meetings you get without compensation or appreciation. 

A typical day at work included signing in, gathering our necessary materials for the day, and then scurrying to finish the locations we were assigned for the day (usually 2-3 WHOLE areas). Although I did not learn much from this job, I did learn my way around and throughout the hospital. Management was very unprofessional. They would pile excessive amounts of work on us and expect us to finish it all in 7 hours (8 hour shift with a 30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks that we didn't even take because of the amount of work piled on us), and if we couldn't finish it all, we were scolded and treated like toddlers. They would hold staff meetings with little to no notice when we were supposed to have a day's notice. A union rep. was supposed to be present during these meetings, but since management gave no notice, a union rep was never there. My coworkers were excellent. They were friendly, genuine, and all around helpful. The hardest part of my job was struggling to complete all of the tasks assigned to us that day. The most enjoyable part of my job was getting help from my coworkers on the rare occasion that they had time to help.

I worked as a housekeeper for Arnot in the past year. I was retired for a few years from a professional career at their major competitor and was looking for something to do a few days a week. The department was chronically understaffed. That appeared to be the case in other departments as well. While the housekeeping department staff got along well with each other, the other departments seemed to have a problem "playing well with others"...something we all learned in kindergarten. RNs looked down on LPNs, who looked down on CNAs, who did the same thing to the housekeepers. The manager I had was not very good at her job and made things harder than they needed to be. The turnover rate is higher than other places I've worked. My and my co-workers hours were kept just under full time so that benefits would not apply. One part time co-worker worked several weeks at full time hours and was told no full time position was available when she asked about it. I would not recommend Arnot to anybody as a place of employment.

I work 36 hours on call every 3 days and 48 hours on call on weekends on call, as a pulmonary/critical care MD.I take care of the sickest patients in 2 hospitals in the community and have to respond immediately to any and all emergencies. I have been doing this for over 20 years.My partners are well trained and responsible, which makes my job that much easier.We sold our practice to Arnot Health 3 years ago and they replaced our office staff with people who have lower standards than those we worked with in independent practice. We continue to do the best we can with what we have to work with. Our patients in the community appreciate our efforts but this is not reflected in support at the administrative level of the Medical Center.

I have enjoyed my experience at Arnot Health for the past 31 years.  I have been able to work alongside quality healthcare providers and coworkers to provide quality care to our community.  At present, I prepare patients for surgery and care for them in the postoperative period.  I enjoy caring for and helping patients through their hospital experience, it brings me great satisfaction. The medical profession is ever changing, bringing with it many frustrations as to how to work with the changes and provide optimum care for the patient.  This would be my greatest frustration and challenge.  I have achieved great feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction with my nursing career at Arnot Health.  The experiences and opportunities I've had enable me to bring a wealth of expertise and knowledge to my future job place.

There are so many things the AOMC is doing right.... sense of community, camaraderie, support of other RNs and CAs. I love this about AOMC. What the reality is for RNs in the ICU is that they are only given 10 weeks of orientation, even as a NGN. Then comes the pressure, the criticism, then the reality that this isn't sustainable.  I feel like NGNs are being recruited and then discarded as soon as the 10 (maybe 12) weeks of orientation is over. Also, there's no LPNs. Everything falls on the RNs. Also the level of social inequities is so apparent here that if you are a nurse trying to be aware of SDOH and stigmatizing language, most everyone around you will not be in agreement or understand so the moral distress is exhausting.


Arnot Health has too many Managers and not enough staff. Employees are expected to pick up the slack when a job has been vacated, as opposed to filling the empty position. Management and Support Staff are extremely unhelpful and show a high degree of favoritism and retaliation.There is a severe lack of training when a new software program is implemented (which is usually every few months) as well as a severe lack of communication between Management and employees. Policies and Procedures are different at every campus and often times non-existent. The employee turn-around rate is extremely high and every department is understaffed.

Arnot is a great place to work. However, modifications to ensure fellow employees complete their daily job duties needs to be enforced instead of dealing with petty issues. The inappropriate relationships and drama should not happen in a work place. These people should be reprimanded or fired. It's getting old. There are to many "bosses" getting paid to do nothing when the hard workers deserve a raise. The medical doctors are rude to nurses, demeaning, and receive awards for being lazy. I have spent years as an extremely hard, reliable nurse who has been told straight to my face that I am replaceable. Arnot should be ashamed of its losses, and considered future losses and negative impacts towards there reputation.

Upper management doesn’t want anyone to think or act independently. They will wear you down until you doubt yourself so much that you feel like giving up. They don’t encourage growth or offer any kind of praise for hard work. They never come around so they have no clue about department needs or even how it runs, but they have a million opinions to give that will short staff you, stress you out, and create a ton more work. They don’t care about the staff, only that bills drop and they get that revenue, no matter the cost. They treat people as disposable, and retaliate against them if they speak out. It’s a horrible place to work for. It used to have integrity, but they stopped caring about the workforce and care more about money, power, and their own egos.

I worked at Ira Davenport first in ED Patient registration, and then in a satellite blood draw station. While the work was not difficult, and I appreciated the chance to learn new skills, I was put off by the amount of drama that occurred on a daily basis at the hospital as a result of some malicious gossip that went on amongst some of the staff members. I had never worked in an atmosphere quite like that before, and thankfully haven't since. Unfortunately, the behavior of a few colored my experience at the hospital as a whole. But my supervisor was a good and fair person to work for.
