Axos-Bank

Pros:
•	Of the four companies I have worked for over my lengthy career, my role at Axos has been the most challenging and yet the most rewarding. Why? Opportunities are endless, learning is continuous, change is a given, and the ability to make an impact and be rewarded both in terms of growth and monetarily are significant.
•	The requirements to multi-task, take on more, and/or constantly evolve may be deemed "negative" by some but for those that have worked in meritocratic and fast paced cultures, it is invigorating, exciting, and a sure path to continued growth and diversified experience for one's career.
•	Individuals succeeding at Axos are those that constantly self-reflect and focus on self-improvement, rather than deflect and maintain a victimized mindset. Ideas are encouraged and Axos core values are upheld.
•	Success only breeds more opportunity, further vests each team member, and engages team members to be more than employees, but as important, Axos shareholders.
•	As I tell every candidate I interview, Axos is not for everyone. Unless you are willing to align with the above, there will be other companies better suited for you. That said, there will be no companies where the balance of pros and cons will be all or nothing. I tell people all the time that what you might not like at one company may not exist in another; however, rest assured what you will also experience at other companies are new issues that may not be to your liking. Always keep that balance in perspective and your probability of success will be significantly enhanced whether at Axos or anywhere else.
•	As I mentioned above, I have had only four employers over the past several decades which indicates the diligence I complete before joining a company and the loyalty I maintain with such companies. I have been at Axos for 6+ years now and like all my previous employers where I have been able to thrive and grow within a meritocratic culture, Axos has and continues to provide me with the same rewarding experience. It is not always easy, but rewards only come from working hard and persevering.

Cons:
•	None. Only those people that come to work daily and view their respective role as only a “job” will deem Axos not a good place to work. Those that come to work daily and tell themselves, “What I do today is what I did yesterday, but there is a better way to do it” are the people Axos wants and needs to continue its impressive record of growth and profitability. With the economic cycle as it is today, it is imperative that companies like Axos employ and retain team members that are constantly raising the bar on themselves, have a continuous improvement mindset, have a heightened sense of urgency, and do not possess a victimization attitude. Without this way of operating, companies struggle and underperform which then results in cutbacks and/or layoffs. Likewise, being able to minimize the risk of layoffs not only allows Axos to exploit opportunities today when others are pulling back, but also be ahead of the competition when the economy starts to turn in a positive direction. 


As a direct banker, you handle the bulk of customer stress and the bank policies do not make the job any easier. It starts off nicely as you are put into a three week banking crash course, which was honestly one of my favorite parts of working there because it’s when you receive the most help, learn the most, and are able to actually get to know the people you work with. Unfortunately, they only have one person training, so after training, you have to rely heavily on your supervisor and whomever is available to help, which can sometimes be difficult because everyone has things they need to take care of and they don’t get time to do so, so sometimes you’re keeping the customer on hold for long periods of time, which is discouraged. 

Customer interactions can vary and while most interactions you get the hang of, there’s usually something different everyday that you end up learning with help. The pleasant customers can make your day and the rude ones you just have to remember not to take it to heart. The job itself isn’t bad, but my main complaint is the way the bank runs the contact center. They micromanage A LOT. So much so, that even if you’re having technical difficulties, they’re getting on your supervisor to come talk to you when you aren’t on the phone, even when you physically cannot. Everything you do is recorded in some way or reported in some way that it’s suffocating and it seems like it’s only like that with certain parts of the bank, which is just unfair and sad. They don’t give you time to actually take care of the customer or ask questions for things you don’t know, so you’re constantly in a battle with a broken system that makes you look like you aren’t doing your job, when you are and that’s not right.

I believe if they put a better system in place that showed the contact center they care or even listened to the management on that floor to change the issues, the turnover rate wouldn’t be so high and people might actually enjoy working here. The team and supervisors of this unit make it worth it. The policies cripple the entire team and no one seems to want to fix it. Do better Axos.

I have been overall satisfied with my time at Axos. I recognize that the position is not for everyone, but I have seen several JCAs succeed and move on to other departments with bigger responsibilities. 

The JCA program is not for everyone. You need to be self-driven and motivated to get things done. The workload fluctuates, especially during quarter-end and year-end periods. There is always a chance to volunteer and go above and beyond. Doing the bare minimum will not yield positive results. Management will enable JCAs to take on bigger tasks and responsibilities if they show they can handle it. The program is a great opportunity to learn about finance and banking – questions are encouraged and extra training and learning is championed. Working in different departments with different managers allows JCAs to get exposure to several aspects of the Bank and can be useful in settling on a permanent department and moving to higher roles. 

For “Senior” JCAs, the program may seem to hold them back slightly as they are still required to participate in assignments and functions in order to “graduate”, but at the same time taking on more responsibility within their departments. Although the program is continuously changing in order to become more streamlined, it may be best to allow JCAs to graduate at their own pace rather than a specific date based on hire. 

Axos Bank is an “okay” place to work for but if you have an opportunity, go elsewhere. They have decent pay and benefits. Starting is at $15-$17 I guess. Minimal opportunity to move up and shady internal selection/application process. I was able to secure a raise because of good performance (and since I was able to achieve and exceed metrics) but terrible experience for front liners esp csr people. Lots of opportunity for training new hires. And limited path on career development and leadership roles for certain positions unless you know someone or someone knows you. The management is chaotic and lacks general/basic organization for most of their Department. For an online Bank, they do have a bunch of issues with the ui as well as their products. Hard to sell something you are not personally impressed with. One good thing is that the transition in wfh esp during this pandemic was great (at least in my Dept.). They are prepared and very much able to keep most of the staff home. So Kudos! 

Also, you will really know (and feel) your worth once you decide to leave and I guess it will be the case with any company. They make it hard for people leaving. Heard not a single word from my direct team leads when I sent in my two weeks even though I was a top performer.  Did not receive any pay for over 100hrs unused PTO when I left. Again, lots of opportunity in making a last impression but not surprised at all. Most of them are just in it for the $$. Still grateful for the experience and opportunity I was given for being a part of this organization.

Axos is like a start-up in terms of wanting to do a lot of things and doing them quickly, but without the downside of relying on VC funding. Axos allows, rather forces, employees to roll-up their sleeves, learn new concepts, learn more deeply concepts they already know, and, thus, enforces a culture of continuous learning and growth. This is the place for you if you like to contribute ideas to another department even though you are not in that department and have your ideas taken seriously. Axos expects its employees to be assertive, not aggressive, convince others why your ideas warrant recognition, challenge others' ideas without fear, take initiative, and grow with the company. Axos does not like people who can’t walk the talk.

Does the leadership at Axos have all the answers? No. No company in this world does, but Axos invests in learning from its mistakes, and adjusting its approach to continue its growth trajectory. There are times when work has to take priority over personal life, and then there are times when personal life gets its due attention. People who want a 9-5 job every single day should not consider Axos. Sometimes promotions and financial rewards seem to take longer than one thinks they should, but they do come sooner or later.


It would help Axos continue its growth by continuing to give employees a platform to openly voice their professional opinions, challenge and reward the right employees, and trust employees to do the right thing. Explaining more often and more clearly why Axos does what it does would help all employees buy in to the grand vision at Axos.

was promised a lot to come work here, but they never came through. too many changes and incompetent management made it really hard to do my job and make the money I was promised. The whole culture of the bank revolves around not spending money on things that are needed to perform your job. everything must be voted on in multiple committees and takes forever to get any changes done. The CEO is one of the highest paid in the industry and the bank is one of the smallest and worst performers. The benefits are a joke, must be there 5 years to vest in the 401k so they don't have to issue you their Small company stock match if you leave before then. The departments I worked for were mismanaged and they tried to have employees do multiple jobs so they did not have to hire more people. 

This bank tries to make out like they are bigger and better than they really are. they are run like a tiny local bank in the 1970's. They put processes in place that make no sense and that discourage new business all the while demanding you produce more. I have spent Many years in the banking industry (Decades) in my line of business and have never seen a bank or department run so poorly. I would not even keep company stock if it was given to me. Avoid this place.   

No two days are alike. This is a place where your critical thinking skills are used on a daily basis. It's an environment of continual improvement and change, where you are asked to think about what you are doing and how it can be done better.  

We have a formal performance review every 6 months to 
self-evaluate our accomplishments along with our competencies. While we work together in teams on various projects, you are still responsible for getting the work product completed and when others don't pull their part, you have to make sure it still gets done. When you deliver, you are rewarded in a bonus paid out twice a year and usually 50% cash and the other 50% in stock grants that vest every year until they are fully vested in 3 years. Our CEO believes in Axos and wants us all to have a vested interest by becoming owners in the company as well.

This is not an environment for everyone, nor it is a place where you can just mosey through your work day-to-day. I joined Axos to become a better professional in my field expecting full well that I would be pushed towards excellence. I have gained in experience and confidence working here and could pretty much work anywhere and make a positive impact in my field. It's great being part of a work family pressing towards excellence each and every day!

This employer is not run as a meritocracy despite all the lip service. Over time, it seems that a lot of people were disgruntled about one thing or another (pay, lack of supervision, growth, fairness, workload). Turnover is really high and work can be very stressful in part because assignments and deadlines are not adjusted when others resign. The expectation is that you are supposed to pick up the departing employee's tasks without any upside benefit to your performance, pay or growth. It becomes the norm to "meet expectations".  Over time, it breeds resentment and fear that you are being cheated or set up to fail.  I felt I could easily get fired by complaining or going against the grain. What's worse is communication from the top is pretty poor, other thank the sporadic ultimatum or spin on strategy and the bank's success. I became fearful to ask about certain activities because I felt like I wasn't being dealt with honestly or ethically.  After I complained to HR, things got worse.  Though it took me a while, I realized nothing was going to change and the high turnover made sense. You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig and a leopard can't change its spots.   

Think of this job as Banking 101 mixed with a general communication class. This position is not for weak minded people. If you want to build your skills at finances and help people this is the job for you. You will receive many calls that involve issues you will have to think creatively to solve. Axos has a team oriented mindset so asking for guidance is always welcome from associates, managers, and others in the chain of command. Luckily, they understood my strengths and would accommodate and help me with my weaknesses. 

The best part is you will encounter a new challenge every single day that only makes you stronger. You have to be quick witted with some common sense. If you can handle multitasking or want to get better at it this is the place to be. The pay is decent and if you do well with sales you can earn a nice commission check. Apply if you are like helping others, and want a crash course in the online banking world.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
An exceeding terrible company. A lot of managers talked big in meetings, but when real problems came up, people suddenly got quiet or passed things to someone else. The whole environment turned toxic fast, and even simple mistakes could turn into awkward calls or getting called out in front of everyone. The pay never matched the amount of work, bonuses were nothing special, and raises barely seemed like a thing. Most people were doing way more than their job tittle while trying not to burn out. How are people supposed to grow when nobody wants to guide them or even listen. The biggest warning for me was seeing good people lose their jobs while leadership acted like it was just another business update. I made some great friends here, but a lot of us were counting the days until we could move on.
