My experience is in sales. At B&H I've found a company that provides stability and room to grow, and one that ultimately rewards loyalty with great compensation. The company treats employees with respect, understanding, and provides a stable schedule, only full time, never leaving past early evening, lots of benefits and time off. 

B&H doesn't pressure sales employees to hit numbers, just make a great experience for customers and show effort and reliability. It provides lots of training and a low stress environment to help people be the best in sales possible

Schedule for retail is a dream (half day Friday and always off Saturday? Off for a ton of Jewish holidays and PTO on top of it?) No company is perfect, everything is a work in progress... but at B&H work culture and life balance is at a high level and they don't play games with nickel and dime raises. Management focuses on customer experience, growing the knowledge of its sales team, and opportunities for them to grow through varied experiences and training. 

B&H likes to promote from within. It's a reality that people will say they've worked for years and not had opportunities, but those same people will surely be able to name many of their peers who have been promoted and with merit. With a winning attitude, hard work, persistence, and patience, I think it's possible for anyone to grow here. 

There is a great diversity of employees. Some have said only Jewish people are hired or get promoted, and that's just not true. People from every walk and faith and orientation/identity work here and are accepted, in my experience. This also extends to leadership, where increasingly there is representation by minorities. I think sales leads the company in this area. 

Of course, this company is Jewish owned and run, we observe the Jewish calendar. If it's going to bother you to see that some of the structures and schedules have built-in accommodation and consideration for the Jewish faith then this is not the company for you. But in my experience as a non-Jew, the kosher aspect of the company has never imposed much more on me than extra time off, a decent schedule, and perhaps the occasional annoyance of waiting for the approval of an overzealous internet filter to be unblocked.

Overall, I highly recommend working at B&H. There is the feeling of being a part of something great, a company that really puts its money where its mouth is and isn't just obsessed with the bottom line. More often than not, the salespeople as well as the sales managers have some professional or serious interest in the category they work in (specifically the pro areas like photo, video, audio, lighting) which makes the whole place an environment where staff has a lot in common, and passionately so, despite diversity in backgrounds. 

Worked at B&H for a short time but I was hired through a staffing agency (United Staffing Solutions). I was thrown into my department and not any rules and regulations. I learned the basics of the job nothing much about the company and structure. I helped customers, mainly tourist so I was able to meet people from all over the world. That was a positive. B&H as a company is a pretty good place to work, good pay, even better hours and good benefits. Since I was hired through the staffing agency and not B&H I was only paid $9.00 and received no benefits. Management for USS was terrible. Bad communication and not flexible at all. Too many different supervisors and managers as well. And there was clearly not much room for growth within the company. The hardest part of the job was management. The most enjoyable was the customers and the people from all over the world that I met. 

If directly hired through B&H company, this place is a great place to work if you have a love for photography, music, computers and technology. Good pay, hours and benefits. If hired though USS it's not the best place to be if you're looking for a place to grow. Very unlikely that you will move up in the company. Its possible, but there is a 2% chance that you can actually work for B&H if hired through USS. If you are looking for something temporary and just for a short time, then it might be the place for you.

Sort of love what I do and have learned a lot about various industries, but I've also learned that this top-heavy company and out-of-touch upper management does not care about a good chunk of their employees. Just about profit. Before the pandemic, most of the floors were packed with people, and that hasn't changed after they made us all come back in the summer. Even the people who can, and did, prove how well they do their jobs working from home, were required to come back. The "mask policy" is a joke and HR simply exists to shield upper management. There's no enforcement, no improvement. A portion of the employee base isn't on board with masking or vaccines, and since some of those same people are in upper management and HR, the policies are not enforced. And little happens if anything is reported. People don't feel safe now. But thanks for the free bananas! I think a lot of it is due to very top-heavy management structure; the higher they go, the more out of touch they are about the employees they oversee. Directors don't get to direct much, they're just given the bucket of bad news from senior management or HR and told to deal. There are things I do like, but it's hard to feel thankful for any of it when I worry about antivax colleagues getting everyone sick.

Joined this company under false promises after a good interview. When I began my first week I was eager to train and learn new things however the coworker that was supposed to be training me did not and made it very awkward for me to be there. The job cuture is also something that needs to be fixed. Almost all management are under qualified and family related, which is very clear to me that the people put in those positions are just those related to the CEO. No promotion opportunities either since they do not promote if not within the family. I even overheard the Vice president of the company talking down on people who are in management positions in front of me. Expect anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes after your shift to leave the facility  due to there uncomfortable and unnecessary lengthy security screening process. Also, the parking lot situation is beyond ridiculous. Management gets all the good parking in the front while TM's are forced to park behind the site with the potential of getting run over by a crazy driver while walking to the front of the building. Just some advice for qualified persons look elsewhere! Not worth it!

At 4:30 or so each day, B&H turns all the lunchrooms into mini-worship rooms for employees of a certain background. The shades are drawn, the rooms fill with people shoulder to shoulder - this happens everyday - and happened after Covid-19 warnings were issued. B&H will not let you take any bereavement time if a close relative dies - only if they're a parent, child, spouse or sibling. At B&H you are property, not a person. Unless you are the same background as the owners, have a beard and wear a hat, you are treated as a non-entity. All the buyers are males from a certain background. B&H has refused to let me leave 15-minutes early for doctor appointments. There is almost zero job training - and zero room to grow. There is rampant discrimination that affects getting hired, promotions, salary, and how you're treated. B&H doesn't advertise job opening - those are given based on favoritism. B&H retirement contribution is very low. No matter how many years you work at B&H - you only get 15 days for personal, sick, and vacation. Communications from management are often condescending and mean.

A typical day at work is very busy with thousands of first time customers coming in completely clueless about how to spend their $$ but they heard about the store from someone else who had a very positive buying experience so they come with very high expectations. 

I have learned how to be extra patient with neophytes but also stay on par with advanced techies. 

My coworkers make my job easier because I know they will always help me just as much as I help them with product specifications, troubleshooting or big sales. No one is on commission and that is why it is a very friendly workplace. 

The hardest part of the job is staying positive and energetic from the moment the store opens to closing time. There is always an influx of customers and some can be easy while others can be difficult but the same calm attitude must always be maintained. 

The most enjoyable part of my day is a customer who is happy with the service provided because they were paying attention the whole time and now have a good understanding of what they just bought.

I worked as a maintenance mechanic in the Florence, NJ warehouse, and the biggest problem wasn’t the job,  it was the leadership. The maintenance manager and supervisor were consistently uninformed, dismissive, and more focused on appearances than actually supporting or communicating with their own team.

I had legitimate medical absences with a doctor’s note, and no one ever warned me or told me my job was at risk. Instead, they removed me from communication groups, shut off my badge without notice, and let me discover I was fired only when I showed up and couldn’t enter the building. No call. No explanation. No professionalism.

If you expect competent or communicative leadership in maintenance, you won’t find it here.


A typical day starts by arriving to work early, greeting co-workers and reporting to assigned station.  Greeting customers and provided assistance with their purchase.  I make every efforts to provide the customer with the best product.  It is a personal goal to make eye contact and greet each customer with a genuine smile.  At the conclusion of the transaction, I thank the customer and bid them a good day.  
I frequently find myself assisting French speaking customers.  This happens both in person and on the telephone.   Often I’m called to assist  co-workers with French speaking customers.  It is always my pleasure to assist the customer and co-workers and not allow the language barrier to complicate the transaction.  
I take breaks and lunch as scheduled and always adhere to company policies.  
I truly enjoy the opportunity to meet and server such a diverse population of customers.  I am happiest when customers are pleased with the service I provided.

B&H Photo was a great store that I had the privilege to work in. The manager was always on the floor making sure everything was running smoothly. The Boss would come down to the floor as well everyday to supervise the floor and his employees. One thing i learned working in B&H Photo was to keep my composure no matter who i seen or what pressure we were under, especially when famous people would come in to buy very expensive equipment's, we still had to treat them as normal people and still ask them for ID. We treated everyone all the customers equally. Yes, their was a set schedule and they didn't go around it, if you had a doctors appointment you just had to call of you couldn't start in a later time, but you get used to it. I enjoyed it we all started at the same time and finished work at the same time. Store opened & closed at the time everyday. I do wish that they was a way move from floor, more people to meet and socialize with.

When I got hired years ago, this company had a welcoming and thriving atmosphere, with leaders that actually cared about us as people, our advancement in the company and our future. Since then, I have witnessed lower management becoming a revolving door and the people coming in did not share the same mentality. The company did their best to outwardly say they promoted internal growth while hiring outside employees directly into management positions or putting them on the fast track to said positions and passing over the people who actively demonstrated that they had those skills. Perks and benefits offered in my first few years slowly began to disappear, never to be seen again.

All of this being said, the PTO policy and benefits are generous and the pay is decent if you're willing to put up with an environment so violently in flux.
