I hate the negative stigma associated with community mental health programs, but it is 100% true , if you have extensive clinical experience, you may not like working here, because it’s nothing that you haven’t done before, the work is repetitive, unfulfilling, and excessive. I was 2 months in and already burned out . As a clinical care coordinator my job felt more administrative than clinical , due to the excessive amounts paperwork that’s required for one client . Most Jobs are fee for services , so you never seem to be able to get away from the productivity monster . It got to the point where I started to struggle with anxiety because I did not want to clock in and deal with all the paperwork , meetings, trainings, etc , It’s a struggle to find meaning in the work that you’re doing here , especially when you have a vast set of clinical skills that you can’t use ,because the county says you can’t , you’re required to use your personal car to chauffeur clients as if you’re a caregiver, you can’t get much done in the office because it’s a open space and extremely noisy at times, not to mention you work with a lot of petty , immature,messy , and miserable employees, the wellness center is a free for all so you’re gonna be disrespected by the same people who need your help , there are some clients who make the days easy because they genuinely want help, they make this work worth doing , I was excited to work here , because most people tend to stay for years , I only ever heard good things , BACS came to Sac ans employees started quitting the other community mental health providers in droves , BACS was known for having a good work culture ,I didn’t learn anything of value that I can use to further my clinical experience working here , you pretty much last here because you’re suffering through your day , if you value growth , education, professional development, and don’t want to work a job you dislike , or never want to go to , you may want to look elsewhere 

Working as a Program Supervisor for the Housing Community Supports (HCS) program was a rewarding experience. A typical day involved supervising care coordinators, reviewing documentation, supporting clients with housing stability needs, collaborating with county partners, and addressing program compliance requirements. I learned a great deal about leadership, housing systems, behavioral health services, and managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

The workplace culture is mission-driven and focused on serving vulnerable populations. Many staff members are passionate about helping individuals experiencing homelessness and behavioral health challenges. Management expectations can be high due to contract requirements, documentation standards, and funding regulations. The hardest part of the job was balancing administrative responsibilities with the needs of clients and staff while managing changing priorities. The most enjoyable part was seeing clients obtain and maintain housing and supporting staff in their professional growth.

If you ask around about this organization you will likely get a mix of reviewiews just as I did. For me it leaned more the negative. I worked here knowing what others have said about the organization with the hopes that things would improve because the talk to good talk and the work that BACS does in communities is needed. Working with the clients is easy, they have challenges but they just need support and authentic connections. You will drive a lot working here, they will have you do much more than any other non profit which you learn a lot from but often feel used and overworked. They may pay more than others but they need to pay much more.  There  are  too many untrustworhtly, morally ill and unprofessional people that work here. People are mostly focused on getting ahead at all costs, which may mean bending their moral compass and backstabbing others to do so. I have never worked somewhere where people routinely lack boundaries, ethics and act in ways that are just all out unprofessional. If you turn the other cheek you will survive but you won't feel good doing it, if you speak out you will be targeted. If you befriend the right people, run yourself into the ground, don't publicly embarrass them, do a few good deeds they may promote you but you will soon regret it.  Before you consider working here, do your research. Check news articles, news stories etc.

Relative freedom to plan and manage your day as you like, with some flexibility on hours. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?

Dealing with management. Productivity requirements. Buggy programs and equipment. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?

Upper management is the most uncaring, rude, and directly hostile I've come across in my work in community mental health. Turnover is constant and it absolutely affects the quality of the care being provided to program participants. Motivating employees through fear seems to be pretty normalized (based on conversations with others in my role who had been around for much longer). 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?

Morning meetings four days a week. Sometimes you schedule your day ahead, sometimes meetings help you fill in your day. You can plan out your schedule perfectly, but you will likely have people cancel, which means you have to create more work for yourself on the fly to meet productivity expectations. Sometimes it seems that the quality of the services you provide end up being sacrificed to scrambling to meet productivity requirements. 

Handle 988 calls if you’re a dispatcher and drive out to field if dispatched by dispatcher if you’re a  Responder. Everyone is trained at both so you will do both parts of the job as well as many other things that is not part of the job. Management and coworkers are toxic with management not caring about you and coworkers talking behind your back. Most people dont last 1 year and new hires quite usually within 30 days. If you want to work here and ruin your mental state of mind then its up to you. The management was under investigation by their human resources within the last year and shady things are done. If your a responder they will force you to go to unsafe locations and if your a dispatcher your always blamed for not doing anything correctly. Overall no one is truly happy and management have made one of my coworker cry that forced her resignation as well. As for me I couldn’t handle the toxic environment so one morning I decided to drop my things off and just leave on the spot.  Yes this is how bad this job and company is. You been warned.

I’ve had a generally positive experience with my direct program manager at BACS, who has been supportive and professional. However, concerns at the executive leadership level have created uncertainty across the organization.

There have been ongoing issues that have affected staff morale and raised concerns about the organization’s direction and stability. This has led to uncertainty around program continuity and funding, which can make it difficult for employees to feel secure in their roles.

BACS does important work in the community, but stronger transparency and consistent leadership at the executive level are needed to rebuild trust and provide staff with a clearer sense of stability moving forward.

The community BACS creates is fantastic. 
The team is there to take care of the community and genuinely enjoy what they do

Service requirements as a provider.
There is pressure to provide services at a high rate. The work done has a high burnout rate and those together are difficult to maintain long term

Welcoming and inclusive.
There is a sense you are appreciated for the work you do.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Lots and lots of driving with a focus on client care. I put a lot of miles on my car in the short time I worked there

The turn over rate for this field of work is high. Managers come and go. In my two years of employment I have seen 5 so far and a new one is on the way in. The programs efficiency depends on the structure and how management sets the stage. With a solid foundation everything under it flows smoothly. The employees, well that’s a whole different story. You have some good and some not so good, who show up for the paycheck and treat people with no respect at all. Whatever it takes is the model and while some demonstrate this beautifully some suck at it. 

A typical day at Woodroe Place, consisted of supervising/observing clients,-everything from grocery shopping, house chores, interactions among themselves, group meetings and ending the day by updating patients chart. 
I learned a lot from this job, but particularly how to handle and be more tactile in uncomfortable situations.
I enjoyed management because there was no micromanagement. I was able to manage the clients through out the whole day, without any supervision.
The hardest part of this job, was hearing the patients backstory, their pain, turmoil and even anger.
The enjoyable part of this job was simply when they thanked me, for the simplest things.

I enjoyed working on different teams for the most part and enjoyed the very diverses and generally friendly culture. However, management can get downright nasty when it comes to meeting deadlines, often not providing adequate support and having unrealistic expectations. Can come off like they only care about money and getting notes done. Clients and their stories can be trying and emotionally draining at times but they help you grow as an individual and it feels so good when they reach their goals.
