Like any large organization there are positives and negatives.  Unfortunately your experience with Bayhealth will depend on where you land and in which department.  The positives are definitely Bayhealth's pay and benefits-these are very generous for the most part.  There are also some really good people, who in spite of the dysfunction, want to make this a better place.  I was definitely one of those people when I started to work here.

Some leaders in this organization do seem to have their department functioning very well and want their staff to thrive.  Unfortunately, those are the minority. 

This is my very candid assessment of Bayhealth overall. It is a very difficult organization to work within and drive positive changes. Upon arrival to orientation, they are vocal up front about all of the initiatives they are implementing, new building projects, AIDET, Planetree, etc.  

However, once you arrive to work at your actual location those initiatives become mostly lip service.  The senior leadership seems to ignore the real problems of the organization--communication to staff, listening to employee engagement surveys, leading by example, and ultimately making the right choices about key people in key positions.  Once again, this does not apply to all of their senior leaders, I certainly felt that some were more engaged than others.

 This organization is extremely resistant to change.  The various departments are very quick to point fingers and play the blame game rather than work together to implement change. Individual department silos are the norm, putting up unnecessary barriers to getting the work done is also the norm. There is not much teamwork encouraged, developed or fostered across this organization. Accountability for leadership is weak.

I was very disapppointed in my career choice to invest myself into Bayhealth.  Ultimately, I chose to resign my managerial position and leave the dysfunction behind.  

Best of luck to you if you are seriously considering working for this organization. It may work out well for you if you pick the right spot. For me, there is still a lot of change needed to make it worth the risk.

In my time with Bayhealth I have received one internal promotion. I LOVED my old department. I always felt appreciated, supported, and I was constantly learning new things. I really thought Bayhealth was a place I would stay and strive for years to come.

Fast forward, I am constantly overcome with anxiety about coming into work. My new management is incompetent, to say the least. I am led with little to no instruction, and what is given to me is vague. Management changes their mind at the drop of a hat and won't communicate it with you, so when you go to move forward from what was once asked of you, all of a sudden it is wrong and you take the fall for it. Management is undermining and will do whatever they can to be rid of any blame from anything that was essentially their fault. They do not care about their employees, only themselves and how they look to senior executives. When situations are taken to the executive team or HR, they will do whatever they can to support management-- even if they are in the wrong. At the end of the day I truly feel they don't care about the wellbeing of their employees, unless they hold a manager or director title. 

Again, this is not all areas, and not all positions. As an Admin, I feel the honorable, ethical, respectable managers are few and far between. Some are wonderful, but it's the pick of the litter. Overall, I would not recommend Bayhealth if you are seeking out an Admin position. Seeing how situations are handled and swept under the rug have left me feeling vulnerable and exposed. Until that is fixed, I am running for the hills and not looking back. 

Covid has changed so much about how people feel about this place. Ask me a few years ago and I would have said I was happy and now it has gone the complete 180. Bayhealth management gives preferential treatment to the Kent campus over the Sussex campus (Milford). Always. So if you expect to get respect dont work for the Sussex campus. The best thing about the company is the benefits. You'll be hard up trying to find anything better in the whole state.  The pay used to be on par with the best but that has now changed.  Other places in the area are starting brand new therapists out at the same amount people with 5+ years of experience have there. All they want is more more more. Do more of this, work more, pick up more responsibilities but don't expect them to compensate you for it unless you work for Kent. Because that's exactly what they did. Give them a LARGE retention bonus while the Sussex campus got nothing. It has really turned into a horrible place to work, people are leaving left and right and its not just respiratory, its nursing as well. Bayhealth would rather have you work in dangerous, short staffed positions as far as the number of patients you have, and try to hire travelers then pay the dedicated workers anything. If you want a place where you feel fulfilled,  don't come here.

A typical work day consists of taking calls as soon as I come into the office. First, I must log onto my computer and open the information I will need to assist the hospital staff and customers when answering the call. I handle several phone calls from the hospital staff such as doctors, nurses, care management and family members calling about patients. I learned that it is important to report accurate information such as the patients name and date of birth. The work culture is an enjoyable and the management is professional. The hardest part of my job is when I receive a call from an employee or customer who is looking for the answer to a question and I would need to research the answer. The most enjoyable part of the job is being able to assist patient's family members to connect with their families. It is also enjoyable when I help out a team member or hospital staff with a difficult situation they may be experiencing.

The nursing turnover at this company is extremely high. On my unit, all but one dayshift RN/CNA has quit since December 2020. If you are a new grad RN, I don’t recommend. New grad RNs are assigned to being charge nurse their 3rd shift off of orientation, and expected to precept other new grads very early on in their career (within the first few months). Assignments are heavy, it’s not uncommon to be 7:1 on Med-Surg, and you may or may not have a CNA. The biggest issue is upper nursing leadership. Managers are hit or miss, but fine for the most part. The issue grows larger at the director and CNO levels. There is a huge lack of communication and understanding of what the staff do on a daily basis. Not to mention, the pay is not competitive. New BSN RN start out at less than $29. I don’t feel that the company appreciates you furthering your degree, becoming certified, or taking on additional responsibilities. The COVID pandemic has definitely crumbled this company. A lot will need to change to entice nursing staff to come back.

Working in the sterile processing department was one of the most frustrating and disappointing experiences of my career. The management team fostered a toxic culture where disrespect and favoritism were the norm. They consistently talked down to employees, created unnecessary drama, and seemed more focused on exerting control than fostering a productive and respectful work environment.
One of the most concerning aspects was the apparent bias against male employees. Men were often treated with suspicion, talked over in meetings, and held to different standards than others. Constructive feedback was rarely given—instead, management preferred antagonistic and condescending communication styles that demoralized the team. If you’re looking for a respectful, collaborative workplace in sterile processing, I would advise looking elsewhere.




I would recommend working for this company to anyone I know. This company does a lot for its employees and has plenty of opportunities to climb the career ladder. Their is tuition reimbursement available for relevant major paths.  One issue I have is that the holidays are not company paid separately from the PTO earned. There are 6 holidays and the PRO accrued through the year is part of those days. Also if you have kids who get sick or need appointments PTO is burned there as well not sick days as it takes 2 PTO days before a sick day is used. Therefore it is easy to burn through vacation if you are a parent of young children and have your own doctors appointment to or days where you get sick. 

Over more than twenty five years, there were many changes. There were to many times staff needs were not met. There was clear bias in load assignments. Favortism was abuntant. Hospital wide the support for staff was clearly lacking. Turn over of staff was heavy.
 
Even the local paper never printed anything negative about the hospital.

There were occasional periods where there was support for the staff, they were short lived

People who could, did not stay long.

I loved my actual work, direct patient work and working one on one with surgeons.

Most of my co-workers, had recieved their training on the job. Few had experiences with other facilities and therefore had limited vision. 
While it "looked good" to have a large percentage of certified staff, there was little support.

Bayhealth is one of the fastest growing healthcare facilities in the Delaware/Maryland area. It has a great work environment starting with the leadership team that is devoted to developing high quality leaders in their staff. The team of buyers and purchasing assistance work hard at to ensure that the facility is watching cost and providing the best products for the healthcare facilities. The best part about Bayhealth is working with the departments that we provide customer service to. The purchasing department is devoted to customer service to the hospital and also in working with all the vendors that we percure product from.

A typical day is getting the job done.  I have great co-workers who work diligently to meet the needs of our patients.  We are like family -- we have our good days and our bad days, but communication is always an option.  There is always a lot to do, but thankfully I work within a team.  Workplace culture is typical.  Management works hard to meet everyone in the middle.  The most enjoyable part of my job is the patients and meeting their needs.  Meeting goals can be difficult sometimes because of the amount of work, but there are always co-workers in and out of my department who are a phone call away and are more than willing to help.
