A typical day required coming into the salon and turning on music, lights, and doing some light cleaning (and be sure to grab your coffee while you can). Before you unlock the doors you want to make sure that the Salon Professionals "Daily Duties" sheet is filled out, the reception desk area is clean and organized, each salon station is clean and presentable, and that there is at least one pot of coffee brewing (for clientele). You want to pay attention to the clock and make sure that the salon professionals and their clients are showing up ON TIME. After 9 am is when you can start calling 'next days' clients for confirmations, and calling any client that needs to be rescheduled/canceled for 'that day' (due to salon pro illness, emergency, etc.). After all the daily morning duties, and the confirmation calls are complete, the rest of your shift is pretty smooth sailing with answering calls and scheduling/rescheduling appointments (unless it's one of those busy/hectic kind of days). From working at Beauty Brands I learned a lot about what I really enjoy doing (Skin care and make up), I learned about Beauty Brands as a company and plans for the future. I also took away more Front Desk-Reception-Coordinating knowledge than I previously had. The management and Co-workers were pretty friendly for the most part, seemed like everyone had their groups that they were comfortable in. When I first started I felt as if this particular location was trying their best to make me feel welcome, but I also felt as if there were some employees that were already comfortable with their 'family-co workers' and that they didn't like that someone new was coming in. Management didn't communicate that well, and seemed as though during the interview their was clarification and understanding, but once you officially started; everything you had discussed with your manager was out the window and you didn't really have any say. The hardest part of the job was getting comfortable with the routine and what 'to do and not to do' for different Salon Professionals. Their scheduling system was very complex and difficult to manage too. The most enjoyable part of the job was the great (and sometimes interesting) conversations in the salon, meeting new people and seeing the regulars every week. I also LOVED getting to play in the 'Make-Up studio'-trying new products, and playing with new looks. The Salon employee discount was also a two thumbs up!

I went in with an open mind, my first few shifts were decent, then I started realizing how much this job wasn't for me. As a shift manager you are basically a glorified key holder. Getting paid only 9$/hr for completing tasks done by upper management was not worth it. You were also required to work as a customer service specialist, beauty concierge, merchandise coordinator, pretty much any job other than the ones in the salon and spa (stylists, estheticians, nail techs, etc), all for 9$/hr!!! ????
As with any full time position, benefits were offered which was a plus, however paid time off was not elegible for any full time employee until a year of work! That's just ridiculous, I've never heard of any such thing. 
From the time I started, the staff was also just not very friendly, especially those from the salon and spa. They would walk past me, not even acknowledging that I was a new staff member. No one introduced themselves, some didn't even offer help when I was training, it was as if I was invisible. 
Upper management did let me know that this staff experiences a lot of turn over in management and that they just need a sense of stability from a manager, but if they are not willing to even work on acknowledging and pretty much just being genuinely friendly with new staff, then they are also part of the problem. They are pushing managers and other associates away because they arent giving them a chance! I would work as beauty concierge and stylists would push me aside to check clients in as if I wasn't there and ready to do my job. By the time I left, there were still a good 50% of employees who didn't bother to interact with me as a shift manager. 
This job is not worth the money at all!

For starters, let me just say that I personally loved the job itself. Being able to help people find their perfect shade of makeup or help them find the perfect product that wont weigh their hair down was always the highlight of my day. However, there are many more cons to address. The management was very unprofessional. There was unfair favoritism between the salon workers and the retail workers. For instance, the General Manager would baby the salon workers and never scold them for calling in all week or applying makeup in front of customers (which was always a big no-no). While on the other hand, retail workers were always made to do work in the salon that was not their responsibility whatsoever. I do not have a problem with lending a hand to anyone that needs extra help, but we were not pushed to work together as a team. Instead, we were pushed to do the salon workers' jobs strictly because they were too lazy to complete them. There were so many issues with the signage throughout the store that I would personally address to corporate, but these issues were never taken care. The signage would be confusingly worded and horribly misleading. There were even typos on permanent signs hung throughout the store. The pay was also far too low for the amount of work we had to do. Beauty Brands has the potential to be a great company, but more and more people choose to go to Ulta over Beauty Brands because of their better deals and better service.

Every location is different, I’m sure. The location I was in was poorly managed and no one in corporate cared whatsoever. It became unbelievable hostile and catty, even for a salon, and it was too much to handle. I initially loved the position when I joined the company and I was overjoyed to be apart of such a great business, but too many people who didn’t care about the company were being hired. It brought down the rest of the team and those who didn’t care about the company created a very negative work environment for those who cared. Just be mindful of who the manager is and how the front end treats customers. Workers are constantly on their phones and sitting around when customers are in the store, so the title of “customer service specialist” is a complete joke. However, there are fantastic stylists at every location and they do a great job at providing continuing education. It’s also a great place to start at if you’re just coming out of beauty school. No need for clientele because you’ll get a lot of walk-ins especially if you’re in a busy location. If you actually manage to get full time, the benefits are very nice. You also get a 30 minute lunch break and some don’t even bat an eye if you take an hour, which can be nice.

Working for BB hasn't always been awful. When i switched districts, that is when i really felt myself starting to loathe going to work. The upper management (ex: District Managers, CEO, Loss Prevention) are all just creating messes that they expect their employees to clean up after. We would get items in shipment WEEKS in advance, and have absolutely no idea what they'd be used for, for about two or three weeks. There is little to no communication about anything from Home Office. I worked at a store located not too far from Home Office, which happens to be in KCMO. We NEVER had anyone come from HO just to check up on us, it was always a negative encounter. Also, the company is all TALK, no ACTION. They will hire just about ANYBODY, and keep the negativity and toxic people within the company, even though they know it's not good for the work environment. 
I loved working for this company for about a year, but now things are just going down hill, and FAST.

I've worked at two Beauty Brands locations in the Kansas City area, which is where the company is based. The atmosphere of the store really varies amongst location.
Team members from the corporate office are in the KC-area stores frequently, which I think is a plus, because you get a better idea of what the company is about and they get a better idea of what's going in the "field."  My manager and district manager are more than happy to listen to employees' concerns and relay any necessary information to the appropriate person (at the home office, etc.) 
Beauty Brands offers employees the option to attend product education classes (and service classes for the salon professionals). Because of the proximity to the home office, brand representatives are frequently in my store and will often times give product samples.
Employees working at least 32 hours a week consistently (full time) are given benefit options.
My one and only complaint is compensation for hourly retail employees--pay is barely above minimum wage and not competitive at all.

During my time there of nearly two years, we went through eight managers. They hire eighteen year olds with no job experience let alone experience in management to manage not only retail employees but stylist, massage therapist, nail technician’s,,etc... People who are licensed professionals. It is an insult to your profession when you have a person who has no idea about any of these professions to tell you how you should be doing your job. It is not the young people who are hired as managers fault. They are promised training that never comes. This company does offer health and pto benefits. A rarity in the beauty industry. 

A typical day at work consisted of helping and greeting every customer. Some needed to be checked into the spa and salon and some needed help finding a product or gaining knowledge on products. I learned so much about how to give excellent customer service and how to deal with all types of people. The management was strict but fun. I developed relationships with all of my managers. Beauty Brands was my home away from home. I enjoyed working with all of my co workers. Everyone was so sweet and helpful. We all had each others back. The hardest part about my job was that everyday was different. You never knew what you were going to walk into. You had to multitask through out your entire shift which could get tricky but I enjoyed staying busy. The most enjoyable part about the job was learning about all the different beauty products we sold and getting to try them out and take them home. It really helped you know what was good product and bad product for different clients.

A typical day at Beauty Brands consisted of me coming in to work around 1pm every day to close the salon and store at 9pm. I was constantly busy with clients or employees. There was always something to be done.
I had been with Beauty Brands for a year before my second round of employment in 2013, but I was constantly learning new things. From tasks, to products, to things about my co-workers and clients, I was constantly learning.
I was in management for Beauty Brands for 1 year... There was a very high turn over rate for managers at my old location. I had worked with so many new managers within a year, just to see all of them go. The location's management team was not the best, and constantly gossiping about other employees, in their store or in others.
The hardest part of the job was the ups and downs of the other managers. There was no balance and no structure, which led to a very crazy work environment.
The most enjoyable part of the job hands down would be the entire salon and retail staff, as well as a majority of the clients. Those are the only reasons I stayed with the company as long as I did.

I was hired in summer of 2014 as part-time shift manager & part-time merchandise coordinator (so i could work full-time). I began to quickly evolve myself into an amazing manager (merch fell into that), as well as training each employee on the basics of our business. I helped create schedules, orders, maintenance requests, maintained reporting and sales while managing a team of more than 25 retail associates & salon professionals. The best part of my job was being complimented everyday on customer experience and keeping my employees happy and taken care of. I developed everything in management real life versus the school version. Payroll, Accounting, Distribution, Customer Relations, Marketing and Sales Plans, LP, Inventory, Policies, HR Management, Business Law were all among the things I experienced and learned to manage while at Beauty Brands.
