Belmont Pines Hospital

Belmont Pines is my first job in this field and W O W. What a learning curve I experienced! It is mostly behavioral, not mental health. 

The patient population: Behavioral, with diagnoses like Borderline, Bipolar, ODD, Conduct Disorder, PTSD, Learning disabilities. Residential and county kiddos are the hardest yet most rewarding staff-patient relationships. 

The staff: make my job worth working when the going gets hard. There are cliques, but if you avoid them eventually you will find some true friends and supports.

The management: it’s love hate. I love the supervisors, but everybody is under extreme pressure to staff the units so it can get tense at times. Most charge nurses are supportive, good humored, and respectful. There is one bad apple but I avoid her. Personally great. HOWEVER, I feel like upper admins don’t care or appreciate any of the staff. We only hear from them when something is going wrong or they need more work from us. 

Staffing is atrocious. Nobody wants to work here d/t the nature of the work. Staff are underpaid For the number of times we get punched, spit on, and disrespected. Everyone is under pressure to perform. And we don’t really get weekends off. Usually we have one day off a seven day work week. Some people work twelve or fourteen hour shifts Without a good two days off. Staff still get mandated. 

The psycho/philosophical debate nobody will tell you: “effective” staff run the RTC tight with little time for therapeutics. Kids “respect staff that have proved themselves”. But management replaces them with staff that “don’t do anything”. The Kids know who the staff are that “don’t do anything” and when they are staffed on the unit, the kids take advantage of that and riot / act up. 

The work here as an RN is quite easy, but more like a higher paid secretary than a nurse.  I learned that management is unprofessional and unwilling to work with it's employees in order to meet the needs of the employee as well as the needs of the facility. It seems like a control issue.  They would rather let a highly skilled professional walk away, rather than meet them half way and try to work something out that works for both.  I was not even offered an exit interview.  They would not even return my calls.  I remained very professional and kind as I simply was forced into leaving since they would not meet me even a centimeter.  I do not recommend working here at all.  I have never worked for a more unprofessional place in my life!  If they do not value their employees, then who else do they not value?  They will call you everyday to come in and work even on your day off.  They will not allow 12 hour shifts.  You must work 5 eight hour days and many more., Overtime is enforced.  If you need anything, they will not call you back unless it benefits them.  Glad I found out about this company early on. The health insurance is not affordable either and is not even good coverage. The pay here for an RN is not even in comparison to other facilities. In my opinion, for an RN, it is very low compared to other places.

There are issues in Communication, expectations and resolving conflict or problems as they arise.  This agency tends to ignore problems. I was being harassed by a coworker, I went to HR to complain about it and was told “they have a right not to like you”. Yes, but not completely ignore me, or disregard me when we are expected to work together.  When discussing other problems and finding solutions, staff were told to stop complaining and find the solution to fix it. When solutions were brought up, they would be ignored.  When I finally resigned. I gave 3 weeks notice. My boss wouldn’t even walk me out of the building. It’s a locked facility and they are supposed to take your keys.  I’ve seen staff members drag kids down the hallway, scream at them, and intentionally be mean. Now mind you many of these kids have awful behaviors. Have smuggled things in and hurt staff members. I’m disappointed thar with all the people willing to help make this place change their reputation that they couldn’t work as a team to make the place look better. 

This is a fast paced work environment. You need to make sure that you are good at self care otherwise you will burn out fast. This is a for-profit healthcare company, so when census is low you will get sent home or expected to take "census days." If you want to get paid for the "census days" you have to use your PTO or not get paid. I actually did not mind getting sent home early or having census days. Additionally, you do get some holidays off but again if you want paid for those holidays off you have to use your PTO.  My co-workers and supervisors were amazing. Sometimes there is a disconnect between administration and staff. I think that this is because you have multi-disciplinary staff who are each supervised by separate people. Also this place has many employees. If you are a confident, hard worker, who is able to communicate effectively, you will do well here. The health benefits are expensive depending on which deductible you chose. They have 3 plans to chose from.

This place is not at all what I expected, it's horrendous. They tell you constantly during orientation that it's a hospital, it's meant to be therapeutic, not a punishment for the kids. And they come from pretty horrific trauma backgrounds. Yet the majority of the staff treat the kids like criminals. I've seen staff push, shove, and throw kids into their rooms, squeeze them with fingernails and pinch them, call them names, insult them, tell them no one wants them. This especially happens on the RTC. If you don't abuse the kids and rough them up, you're considered weak. The nurses sit around most of the shift and don't help. They talk condescendingly to other staff; the social workers do as well, yet these are the employees who are celebrated and fussed over and called "heroes" by management. Certain BCT's sit behind the nurses station all shift and leave the work to others, while taking all the credit.
Overall, a miserable place to work.

First off, I cannot stress enough how poorly the true mentally ill are treated. If you love your child please do not send him/her to this facility. This is a better facility for juvenile offenders but not sick children. I have personally witnessed the neglect and poor treatment the mentally disabled receive. These poor helpless children are placed in a small confined unit with physically aggressive thugs that should be in jail.

It is a terrible place to work. If you are a strong and hard working person, do yourself a favor and apply elsewhere. This place does not appreciate  their good employees. If you are a hard working staff you will be punished by the charge nurse and expected to work the most difficult areas with the most demanding children every day. NO RESPECT OR LOYALTY TO GOOD EMPLOYEES.

They will hire seemingly anyone. Scheduling is atrocious and management will make deals to cover their shift while short-staffing other shifts. There's an obvious insincerity regarding the upper managements concern over the safety of staff. High staff to patient ratio. Too many violent patients alongside patients who are serious about their treatment. Misleading training. No contingency plans so you're often scrambling to handle a situation, and you often have to bend the rules to fix issues. Management seems to only be worried about looking good for corporate with minimal to no consideration for advice from staff. Poor training will minimal applied in day to day.

Belmont Pines has gone so down hill in the past few years that I really had no choice but to look fo another job. The pay is a joke. There are BCT's that are just getting hired in that are making more than BCT's that have been there for years and then you're expected to train them and are responsible for them while they are making up to three dollars more an hour than you. HR is an absolute joke. Unless you kiss her behind or have an affair with her then you don't matter and she will make your life miserable if you get hurt. Everyone up front has a better than you attitude and constantly tells you how to do your job but are unable to do it themselves. You're understaffed and under paid. Most of the good employees are gone. Theres nothing but favoritism and if you get in with the people up front then you can get away with murder. But if you call them out, theyll find a way to fire you.

The problem is this company hires poor quality people.  There are racial wars amongst staff. Lots of animosity towards the people who actually work and can control the units. Power struggles and popularity contests. Nurses who don’t take charge. Supervisors who don’t supervise. Workers who have worse issues than the kids. Staff with their little associates and silly bachelors degree yet have NO control of the kids, lack experience and Maturity. The Hospital continues to accept conduct disorder thugs that assault staff and other weak patients. It’s a puppy mill. Fill the beds and make the cash. BCT’s are paid poverty wages for the heck they go through. I’ve seen hundreds get fired or quit. They’ll use you and burn you in the end. It’s not worth it

There are easy days, and there are terrible days.  But overall, it’s an incredibly rewarding job when you can see kids improve. My coworkers have hearts of gold. We make a difference every day. We try to teach kids coping strategies, conflict resolution, and give them hope for the future.  Current management makes us feel appreciated. Teamwork has never been better. It’s tough because it is a psychiatric facility, not a Walt Disney resort. Facilities like this get a bad rap because years of trauma aren’t “fixed” in a week as people would like, not all reviews are factual, and some of the situations kids come from are just so sad that it makes outside people uncomfortable. But there is hope. And that’s why we come to work every day.
