This is a great company to work for, weither it is in afterschool daycare or working along with the teachers and staff as a custodian. I started as a afterschool daycare counselor years ago at Westview Primary School and the program was great for the staff and the kids. Even also working with the summer program is great as well. But now i work as a custodian at Westview Elementary School and i enjoy working there. Everyone is nice and making sure that the work load gets done when someone is gone/sick/off. I enjoy working with my coworkers because we always look out for each other and help each other when one of us needs help with work we help each other to get it done. So i would like for everyone to see how amazing work as a custodian is and also is a great way to gain experience in the work force.

The best part was the benefits. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Did not have enough support working at a school that has over 1300 elementary students.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture was stressful and sometimes overwhelming. All calls transferred clerical staff did have adequate training on how to handle a call and worked in position over 2 years. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Enrollments, Attendance, set up classes for teachers and students. Attended meetings and submitted reports. The process was a never ending experience. You always had work and deadlines to meet.

They never have enough SLPs and they don't treat the ones they do have very well. They have "too many cooks in the kitchen" - lots of people "in charge" but no one can ever give you a straight answer without asking 5 other people over them. The pay is abysmal. If you can get placed at one, single, good school, you're lucky. I have been lucky to be placed at a good school with an incredible principal but District level management is just plain terrible.

Poor management, paperwork requirements were insane as to if one "i" was not dotted correctly, the entire thing must be re-done.  Understand that federal law required to be followed, but the entire IEP did not need to be re-completed due to one word error.  
The hardest part of the job was keeping up with all discipline issues, paperwork, and pleasing coordinator.  The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing students succeed and increase their levels of education according to their IEP goals.

A typical day at work starts at 7AM when all the kids come in to start the day.  Then its off to teaching/learning.  I learned over these 9 years to have lots of patience.  The hardest part of the job was behavior management.  There were so many different behaviors to learn and they also clashed with one another.  So if one child started having behavior issues you can bet there would be others following behind.  The most enjoyable part of my job was when you saw the child's light go on.  As in, they finally realized what you were teaching them over the past month.  That to me is probably the most rewarding part of the job.

Teaching is hard enough, but when you have school board members and district officials that are completely disconnected with what is going on in the classrooms and what is actually best for the students and not themselves, it makes it almost impossible. This used to be the district to work in several years ago, but recent changes to school board members, superintendent, and district officials have made it one of the least desirable districts. If you are new to teaching, you would do well to look elsewhere. At least until there is a change in leadership.

Typical day begins at the lot at 5:30 am , review what routes must be covered and coverage of those routes. Routes mainly go from 6 am to 9 am then 1pm to 4pm . Must be familiar will ALL subdivisions in county. I learned team work is critical ! Worked with awesome co-workers. The hardest part of the job is remaining calm when a fight breaks out on the bus , not allowing to resolve discipline issues immediately and not smoking (even on breaks). The most enjoyable part is the love and respect from students :)

I love my job as a pre-k special ed teacher’s assistant. I work hard, putting to practice my years of experience working with special needs children. However, I only take home just under $1000/month. Who can live off of  this? Furthermore, most teachers assistant’s work just as hard as teachers only to make a fraction of what they make. Obviously I stay because of my love for children and my desire for helping each child reach their full potential. But each time I receive my pay and go to pay my bills, I question whether I can afford to stay.

My departmental colleagues, a wonderful group of educators.

The lack of teacher support from administration and their non-existent enforcement of boundaries with parents.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Morale is low due to teachers not feeling supported and being overloaded with non-essential responsibilities.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working pretty much non-stop with never enough time to finish everything.

Berkeley County School district was a good place to work. The principals sought to include new teachers in staff activities. The staff I worked with was eager to network and work together to help students. Pay could have been a lot better but this is typical of school districts in South Carolina. Professional development for arts teachers is something I wish that I had while working there. My school was warm, welcoming, and they truly treated each other like family. Parents do thier best to be involved and will work with you to help shape and guide your students. Berkeley County was a very good employer.
