If you can stay on task and up with the workflow you can handle it. A lot of phone calls, not enough pay or availability to move up within the company.

 A great place to start in the insurance industry but if you want to make money and move up you will have to go somewhere else. 

The work life balance is fine, no CAT pay within this company as within other companies. 

They have yearly review that go up by most 6% if you are lucky.

They closed two departments due to losses so take that with what you will. 

HR is not great they do not help you or even respond until you hound them.  Management it depends on what team and department you are in. If you are lucky enough to have a competent team it should not be too bad if not than it can be very hard to handle the workload and clique atmosphere. 

They are moving to get rid of remote employees they want everyone in office literally the head of the company has said this. 

The hardest part of the job is workload, the best part is being remote if you are lucky enough to have it. 

The pay is atrocious and if you are salary, it is even worse.

 I learned how to be an adjuster within the company which is beneficial in the insurance industry. 

I would recommend working here to break through the industry, but I would not recommend staying a long time, at most 5 years if you absolutely have to. 

There is no lack of work. The issue is everyone keeps quitting so the workload gets bigger and the pay stays the same. There is minimal supervision so it is a free for all.  Supposedly there is no money in the budget to raise the wages but there is no one that cares enough to get us paid more.  Everyone gets to do what they want so the decent employees get stuck cleaning up their mess.  The lack of communication in the department is astonishing.  The higher ups including the  director, really need to take a good look in the mirror.  Ask yourselves why everyone is quitting.  All they seem to care about is that the numbers are being met. Typical for a corporation of this size but not fair to the hard working.  Thanks for the $150 taxed bonus and book bag no one cared about.  We want BETTER PAY!!! On to the training.  The training, or should I say lack there of, causes a downward spiral for every department. The turnover rate hasn’t woken Human Resources up, so I guess nothing ever will. Send a survey out and ask the employees what we want. Start listening before all the good are gone. 

Company that lacks to adapt to modern times. Very poor salary structure, and a slap in the face 'bonus' of $150 for hardwork and picking up the slack of multiple departments due to the high employee turnover. 

Constantly put into positions to learn roles of other departments because of the number of people leaving the company. No additional pay or benefits are received from being forced to take on additional roles and raises for the year are never above 3% even with the current inflation of the economy (was less than 1% this year.) Overall, a very micro-managed management team, and a large work load each day due to the amount of people walking out the door. 

Exit interviews were extremely unprofessional, and the lack of pay and issues brought up were received by HR with a "yeah we get that a lot", yet they have done nothing to retain employees. 

Overall, i would avoid this company at all costs due to the poor pay and large workload. If you take on additional roles, do not expect to receive any kind of compensation or to factor it into your annual review, as it does not matter to the company. 

I've been at GUARD for a decade. Starting out as an Underwriting Analyst Trainee, I worked my way through multiple commercial insurance lines of business. Eventually, I was tapped for a supervisory role based on my performance and engagement with customers and peers. From there I moved into an Underwriting Director role for small business and eventually to a position as Regional Underwriting Manager. I love seeing my staff and colleagues develop as insurance professionals. This company encourages employee innovation and engagement - even if all our ideas cannot be implemented immediately, there are multiple platforms to help fine tune process and efficiency. I'm able to leave a real impact on the bigger picture and collaborate across departments.

The typical work day starts with going over the bills, medical reports, legal documents, and any emails that came in from the prior day. Then I begin working on the claims already scheduled for that day and handle any new claims that get assigned. I have learned a lot about the handling of workers compensation claims and insurance in general through my four years with GUARD. My supervisors and management are very supportive, help to foster my skills and help me grow as an adjustor and advance in to other positions. The hardest part of the job is sometimes getting a resolution of claim if there is a difficult attorney. The most enjoyable part of the job is knowing you're helping people when they need it and the people I work with. 

Micromanagement at its finest. Expected to log in before scheduled shift, if you speak up you’ll be on the hot seat. One of the lowest pay for an underwriter ~$18Hr. Only one person in the team of ~10 underwriters was able to meet the daily quota of files reviewed, because they rush through the process with no notes & approve every home, good or bad. If you care about throughly doing your job, you’re encouraged to rush through it. Management will hound you every minute via chat on what you’re doing. If you correct management on incorrect info they provide, they won’t apologize or fix it moving forward & they’ll start making a list of reasons to fire you. Only good thing was they were good about approving PTO requests.

With few exceptions, supervisors at this company micromanage their employees and gatekeep information that should be common knowledge and practice in the workplace. I had to beg for performance reviews in order receive semi-constructive feedback from my leadership. 

It was extremely difficult to hold anyone accountable for persistent operational issues, especially if the matter was interdepartmental. There was also little opportunity for growth because of rampant nepotism/favoritism. 

The company's only motivation for its employees following the pandemic was a 2.5% raise, which is nowhere close to merit or market standards (and that's if they thought you deserved it). 


I have been with the company for 10 years and have been a part of the highs and lows.  I joined the company when we were in growth mode, was a part of new product launches, but also endured a challenging period of rehabilitation, and needing to get back to profitability.  We are now turning the corner and are igniting the growth engine.  I see the mindset shifting at every level of the company, and it's an exciting time.  Our new executive management team gets it, and our ultimate parent company in Berkshire Hathaway has been very supportive.  Good things are happening!

I was denied promotions multiple times for reasons I think were to keep me in the Customer Service department and not allow for advancement. If you start in Costumer Service and don't suck up to management to advance, try to get out of there ASAP. The pay is too low to start. Management only cares about how many/quickly calls can be turned over, the callers are rude and almost always not happy. Also they bribe people with free lunch if you don't take your full lunch break and no other breaks are given. Good luck if you decide to work here in Customer service. Also promotions are given mostly based solely on nepotism.
