Pace/stress level of work could vary pretty wildly depending on the time of day, location of store, and your position. For the average warm-body checker, the job is painfully easy. For anybody who promotes or actually wants to do stuff beyond mindlessly checking, the pace and job could become fairly fast and stressful, especially when you have to pick up the slack of other warm bodies.

In the world of retail, this environment is probably one of the most habitable. There are a lot of fun things to learn for anybody who chooses to. Depending on how long you stick around, you could learn more about all kinds of booze than you ever wanted to know. Depending on your position, you'll get some good receiving/ordering experience that you can put on your resume, and you can make some good connections w/ vendors that you can maybe leverage later for a better job.

At every location I worked at, store level management was always good, although my first immediate managers were a bit too lax. Store managers and assistant store managers were the types that made you want to put in some effort for.
However, corporate management was a different story. District managers and above don't really care about store-level people, but go through the appropriate motions to try to make you think they do. There's a MASSIVE disconnect between corporate and store level people. There are a few awesome people at corporate, like some allocations people, IT people, etc., but that was it.
Raises were pathetic. The pay was passable starting out as a checker, but the increase in pay when promoting up is not worth the additional stress & responsibility. They USED to pay better, but those days have long passed. Raises are based upon your performance review, and historically the district manager would have final say in what your scores actually were, so numbers would get reduced so they wouldn't have to give you a decent raise. Only once was a raise received that was greater than 20 cents.

Workplace culture was fine. As said above, store level stuff was pretty good overall. Having to deal w/ corporate people was infuriating at times. The vast majority of customers were cool. Not many people are in a bad mood when they're buying alcohol. There were plenty of memorable bad customer stories, of course, as there would be in any retail gig.

Hardest parts of the job - dealing with customer-zillas, dealing with the periodic dense new/temporary checker, and listening to your district manager's corporate speak.

Most enjoyable parts of the job - learning new stuff, tastings, and friends. There were definitely some good people at the store level along the way that were fun to work with, despite the other issues.

Overall - for retail, not the worst. Decent enough place for somebody in their early 20s to learn some stuff. But don't plan on sticking around for more than a few years as it isn't worth it.

A typical day at work: Get to work, put on work uniform, clock in, pre-count the money in my cash drawer, log into register, stand and wait for a customer.  

When I wasn't cashiering I was on the sales floor helping customers. I learned to be versatile in most areas of the store due to lack of staffing. 

Sometimes we'd have only a staff of four or less during the evening/ closing hours. I would be on the sales floor helping people in the beer, spirits and wine departments. Sometimes I would have to cover two breaks at once and be the back up cashier and back up deli/cheese assistant. 

I got along with most of my co-workers.  We helped each other out when we could.  I have befriended quite a few of my co-workers while I've been there.

I have learned quite a bit more about the products we have there than when I had started working there. 
I thank my co-workers of past and present for that knowledge. 

About ninety percent of the time when something broke we the staff used your own money to fix a problem that the store didn't want to spend any money on.  

The hardest part is working for a company that cares more about profit then it does about people.

The company had to come up with a survey game to motivate its employees to help customers. 

 Let me rephrase that: The employees needed motivation to do what they were getting paid to do in the first place which was helping people ie; customer service.  

While some people were busy helping customers and handing out survey cards to increase their chances of winning a contest.

I would be helping people just because I wanted to.
Needless to say I didn't win any contests, oh well.

The best part of my day was when someone sincerely told me, "Thank you!", or I made them laugh or smile.

A normal day would begin by often unloading top stock of still packaged bottles, followed by (on weekends) going over inventory and making sure the counts all added up. When the store opens, it would be time to either work the floor and assist customers while also doing an assigned task between customers. If working as cashier, there is also additional tasks assigned, such as stocking, or building displays near the front. Although as cashier, you interact with every customer for each transaction, so the sub-taks would tend to be a bit simpler and always at the front of the store, within eyesight of the doors.

Co-Workers for the most part were always helpful and friendly, al though after multiple years, and decent turnaround, not everyone was ideal. Still, no major issues, as managers seemed to do fairly well hiring the right people.

The hardest part of the job by far is dealing with being chronically understaffed. A problem at both locations (Arizona and California) I worked at. I feel at any given time, there are usually two customers who need personal help, and there needs to be one person available who stays upfront to watch for theft, and to serve as cashier. Which leaves three people needed at all times. Often only having two people proves tough, especially on busy nights when there could be 5-7 customers who need personal help. It can be mentally difficult to juggle 5 people requesting different things from you in the span of two minutes.

The most enjoyable was meeting and interacting with customers when there was time to do so. It's nice to get to know people, converse about the different things you both like, and even sometimes make lasting personal friends from customers.

Only good thing about working at bevmo is your coworkers. 9/10 times they are cool but everything about working there offsets it. They cut your hours without telling you. Customers are almost always rude. There's constantly people stealing. Management are complete idiots to the point you wonder to yourself "how did they even get to become a cashier?" Room temp IQ pretty much with all of them. If you don't get 35+ hrs a week (which 99% of employees don't) you don't get any type of benefits or insurance besides a measly 5% off stuff in the store and customers pretty much always get better deals than you. You can be a stocker, lifting easily over 5,000lbs a day during the holidays and they won't give you health insurance. not only do they not give you insurance but they barely pay you enough to pay rent and for groceries. I would never work here again unless it was my absolute last option. If for whatever reason you decide to work here, DO NOT do more than you're asked. Once they see you're an employee that actually wants to be productive, they will make you do all the other work the lazy coworkers don't want to do while you get the same amount of hours as them. I asked for weekends at night on my preference page when I signed up for the job and my schedule was literally mon-fri from 8am-4pm for months until they cut my hours in half. then they cut them in half again. Mind you, i've only missed 2 days throughout the year i've been working here and one of the days was to take people to the airport. I show up on time, everyday and they still cut my hours by 75%. 

most employees will spend much of their time on the register, checking ID's, and helping the customers. If there are other employees on hand, then the range of job duty extends to moving product to it's proper place, keeping the store presentable, and providing customers survive. (I spent most of my time on the register, often 5-6 hours at a time)

Bevmo has all their employees educated about the product they sell, providing classes that the employees must attend to learn more about wine. (I attended a few of these classes)

My experience with management at Bevmo has for the most part be highly positive, with most of them skilled in managing the store, and communication with both employees and customers alike.

Similar to most other retail stores I've worked for, but with a far lower turnover rate for honest hardworking employees. Most of the people I've worked with there understood their job, and saw that their job was done right.

The hardest part of the job would have to be remaining customers as one provides friendly customer service. Being a store that mainly sells alcohol, so events often come up involving the customers legality in buying the product they want.

The store gets plenty of customers pass through, some are quite fun people, who love to share their knowledge about wine, beer, and sprites. Though most conversations are short, work hast to get done, it is often an enjoyable, and education moment with people who often return.

A lot of other reviewers have expressed succinctly what is wrong with this company. The most pressing issues for myself now nearly one year in include no consistent scheduling, no dependability of hours, no advancement, no semi-annual performance review.  There is a good reason the attrition rate is one employee a month; employees aren't fired, they just leave. There is no chance to learn about product as there are no samples to be had. Tastings are done due to Covid-19. The discount for buying your own product to discover it and recommend it is measly, and their 401K contribution is a joke. The 401K is with Fidelity and you're earning 2.5%. You could do much better on the general stock market. Your conscience has to be okay with duplicitous marketing that includes taking name brand wines, doubling their price and then offering them as part of their buy one, get the second one for a nickel. Their house wine brands which they make a lot of money off are with only a few exceptions knockoffs, secondary juice that no one wants.  Fellow employees are basically kind and helpful, but as everyone's in the same boat in terms of pay, there's not much cattiness. Zilch training with new systems. You're picked apart quickly and relegated to stocking and checking customers out. To sum up, it's not even a job; it's something to do while you're really looking for a job. Take your passion for the alcoholic beverage industry somewhere else.

I am usually on the register helping customers check out their items. I am required to ID anyone under the age of 50. When i am selling alcoholic beverages to them. I occasionally work on the sales floor. If I am on the sales floor I will face the store, refill items on shelves, and help customers purchase what they are looking for.. 

Everyday I learn something new at Bevmo. Members of management and a few older employees teach me about wine, spirits, and beer. Every department has one or two employees in charge of the area. I am constantly learning about store products. It is nice to know how wine, beer, an spirits are made.

The hardest part of the job occurs when business is slow. Especially if i am on the register because I am required to stay at the register. So time can drag on when their are no customers.. It is much more fun to be in a fast paced environment because it keeps me busy and on on my toes. I enjoy the return customers because I get to know them and they get to know me and other Bevmo employees. 

Overall , I really enjoy working with the employees and management because we are like a family. The company has about 12 employees so we get use to working with the same people on a daily basis. Everyone gets along great and we work as a team to finish daily tasks.

Worked here for years so I ran the gamut of good and bad managers. 
THE GOOD: they worked hard, were understanding of employee needs, went above and beyond to make sure staff was taken care of (especially during COVID lockdown), and hired people that fit the job AND meshed well with existing staff. 
THE BAD: They tossed out existing procedure to make things up, falsified time cards to make up for staffing lack and necessary overtime, spent more time watching streamed shows in back than working, did personal shopping while making a supply run, and literally had people quitting on the spot and citing the manager as the reason why.

Overall, your work experience depends on your store’s location, the staff you’re working with, and how well the manager can work within the system’s setup to make sure both staff and corporate are happy. I met some great friends while working here as well as living through some crazy interactions that even I have a hard time believing happened.

My crew at the end had a good thing going — we were moving fast but enjoying the work and environment  — it’s a pity that the higher ups were getting so into micromanaging everything that we found that it was better to leave than stay. 

I worked for the BevMo in Elk Grove (off East Stockton Blvd). 

The job itself was not hard, most of the "work" as register/cashier. At times you would perform other tasks like stocking, cleaning, etc.

There were usually 3-4 people per shift: One checker, one of the sales floor, and one manager, and occasionally another person helping out around. 

It was exclusively part time, majority of people would only get between 12-20 hrs per week (which consisted mostly of 4 hr shifts) unless you were a manager or you "endured" yourself for lack of a better term. Saying that, don't expect much, you don't get benefits or anything unless you are a manager (full time). The one upside is that at my store they were flexible with schedules. If you had school or another job they were flexible to that.

The job in itself was rather slow. The majority of the clientele was older (over 55). There would be times where there would be no people for close to an hour.  

Pay is minimum wage. 

The management was very cool. They helped you whenever you asked as did the more experienced co-workers. 

All that together, I would say this is NOT a career job unless you really like it. If you're in your 20's or 30's and want to make a little extra money on the side then this is for you. It's a good flexible second job but after that.....that's pretty much it.

Management culture seems to not be interested in supporting staff to be trained efficiently. Managers are still required to work while ill due to staffing issues. It’s a fast paced environment, often chaotic due to being perpetually short staffed, non-management employees seem unmotivated but this is also due to lack of management involvement in their day and a culture that generally does not support fluidity in learning, thus creating reason for dissatisfaction and turnover. Minimal communication from upper management staff. Outdated technology for looking up product info. You have to make a personal financial investment which can be very costly, in order to learn about wine, spirits, and beer- no tastings are currently being done due to the pandemic. I can understand not doing tastings for customers, but for employees getting to know product is essential to your job especially since they have so many items exclusive only to BevMo, you won’t find these items in other stores due to their relationship and arrangements with certain merchants. They’re generally doing well enough in sales to be able to staff appropriately. You can guess what is probably happening which is typical to many retail establishments, they expect more work with the same amount of staffing.
