Billings Clinic

Billings Clinic is an okay place to work, until you start understanding what is expected of you. There is no individual accountability here, so the employees who do well at their jobs and have minimal accuracy errors are expected to make up for all the employees who don't do well and who make errors. Those who management has given up on teaching aren't made aware of what they are doing wrong so those employees never fix or learn from their mistakes. The rule BC uses, is that the last person in the encounter is responsible for everything in that encounter, including anything that was done wrong during previous visits, even if you weren't the one to see that patient, is your responsibility and you will be who is spoken to about things that are incorrect, not the originator of the incorrect info. There are around 75 employees that work in this department and only about 20 of us actually do the job as it is expected to be done. 20 of us making up for the mistakes of another 55 employees who input information in an average of 300 encounters a day. It is an impossible task that management demands be possible so they don't have to actually deal with the issue with specific employees.

On top of that, the person who "trains" the Patient Access employees has never been trained in Patient Access and doesn't know what any of the different desks actually do. She admitted this during training and again at subsequent department meetings not just to me, but to nearly every employee who works in the Admitting Department. The "trainer" is a literal joke to all of us and is a major part of the issues that exist in the department today.

If that weren't enough to deter you, Billings Clinic is obsessively physician-centric and if you are not a physician, you do not matter. Literally. Physicians can treat you terribly, interrupt you, be rude to you for no reason, and any other unprofessional behavior you can think of and BC won't do anything about it. Additionally, patients are allowed to treat employees in any manner they like including cursing at you, attempting to assault you (I have personally witnessed 2 of our employees and several RNs have patients attempt to strangle them), throwing things at you, and in general acting as if you don't matter. (Are you noticing a theme here?)

So if you are alright with getting paid an average wage, working 12 hour shifts where you do the work of 25 other people, having management still tell you that you aren't doing enough, and being required to pick up a bunch of extra shifts or being berated by management if you don't, then this is the place for you.

A typical day at work for me involves checking in patients for various appointments.  I must verify all demographic and insurance information, collecting any co-payments required before the patient can be seen.  This all needs to be done in a timely and accurate manner.

I have improved my patience while working here.  In registration, you're at the front line of the battlefield, so if anyone is upset for any reason, you're the first to hear it.  The vast majority of the time is because a doctor is running behind, which we have no control over.  But in this difficult situation, I have learned how and what to say to help calm the patient.

My managers are fairly far-stretched, but they do the best they can with the resources they have.  It would be nice to have at least one more, but I understand there is a budget and we all have to work within it.  That said, they are all amazing and make me feel like a valued member of the team.

My co-workers are by-far the best aspect of my job.  I have worked with them for over 2 years now and they have become my second family.  Although it is very important for me to advance my career, it will be hard to leave my work-family.

The hardest part of my job is also the most enjoyable:  the patients.  Just like any job in customer service, you have mostly good experiences, but there are those few bad bananas.  Over the course of a decade in customer service I've gotten very good at making "banana bread."

I loved doing my internship at Billings Clinic. It was a rewarding experience. In the clinic I completed blood draws and learned the process of taking the blood, labeling and sending samples to the lab.  I was taught how to take other samples such as urine, to measure, label and send the samples to the lab, and to stock and clean the drawing room. An average day would be combine all of these tasks into one work day. In the hospital I learned how to enter a room and wake a patient for blood draws. I was showed how to draw from a bedside, label, enter information into a handheld computer or the computer in the lab, then send the sample to the lab on time. An average day at the hospital would include all of this, plus cleaning all of the instruments carried into a special precautionary rooms. The management was great and helpful. The co-workers I had were fantastic. They were helpful and wonderful at answering any questions or concerns I had. The employees invited me to eat with them and sit to chat in the break room. The hardest part of the job was getting a difficult draw. The best part was having a patient tell me they did not feel a thing and that I was the best phlebotomist they had dealt with in years of blood draws.

I worked for Billings Clinic for 2 years. The benefits are amazing. Compensation needs to improve a lot. Throughout my time here we had four different nurse managers. They were terrible. They didn’t care about the well being of their employees, didn’t handle problems in a professional manner, had very, very unreasonable expectations. My nurses and I would get in trouble for overtime even when our providers were still seeing patients after 5 and we were told we had to stay until they were done. I had emergency surgery and my doctor sent a note my nurse manager. I wasn’t supposed to work for 4 weeks. I had surgery on a Thursday and went back to work on Monday. My nurse manager wrote me up for missing 2 days of work even though I discussed with her over email and face to face several times about the fact that I was going to have to have surgery the next day. And again, my doctor sent her two notes letting her know that I had to have surgery and also letting her know after surgery that things went well but I would be out of work. Human Resources did a great job of handling this situation, but management needs a lot of improvement.

Front line worker, exposed to various viruses all day. I have used all my PTO from acquired illnesses on the job. I will never see a vacation. I have also been punished for excessive absences directly related to taking care of the sick community. They say, "stay home if you're sick." My pay rate does not match my experience nor keep up with cost of living. I am barely surviving as a single parent. Just circling the drain. Lunch breaks are rare or barely 30 minutes. Under-staffed as other organizations compensate more. Why work for less? Why take care of the public when you are always sick and use all your PTO being a caregiver? Morale is low but (we) still provide quality, cutting edge  health care no matter what with a genuine smile. 
Why stay? My coworkers keep me going. I am the sole breadwinner and changing jobs when living paycheck to paycheck makes it tricky. So, I have 2 jobs to barely make ends meet. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Has very good workers, nice, respectful, but low morale.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Company seems poorly managed, constant barrage on how broke they are while they continue to build and remodel as that is a different “bucket” of money.  Some departments have not had raises in 3 years, last raises were far below inflation increase.  Staff let go, restructured, with work loads increased and new duties added.  Heavy emphasis on turning over beds to increase revenue.  Hire consultants instead of Administrators/Managers able to effectively lead and efficiently manage a med facility.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Administration is hostile.  My department head actually told me they are afraid to say anything and risk being fired.  Previously had to set up a hotline for complaints

No typical days, constant is understaffed

Joined the company to be a part of doing good things for people. once in it became very apparent management has little concern for people, it is all about numbers and providing numbers to the government to make it appear the clinic is meeting or exceeding standards.

gossiping, undermining and a culture of cut throat seems to be the norm. 

hopefully with a change in leadership things may change. my suggestion to the new CEO would be to strive to make it a friendly workplace and put in place ways to review managers and directors anonymously. 
the medical field is high stress on its own, having added stress laid on employees by managers only makes things worse.
I would also suggest investing in a LEAN officer to review and make suggestions of change.

there is abundant cost savings available, but when suggestions are given to some managers they openly rebut the suggestions as they have no concern in saving the "non-profit" funds.

I would also suggest to the new leadership to look at the philosophy introduced by the former mayor of new york

A typical day at work is steady and at times hectic but non the less I learned to appreciate the little things in life, don't take anything for granted. My management crew are understanding, patient and caring they make a rough day turn around for the better and if not they try, easy to talk with. Many co workers have became friends outside of work and others we maintain a professional attitude towards one another. The hardest part is wanting to do more for everyone around you with the time frame you have to keep which makes it difficult to let go once you set a little bond. My most enjoyable part of the job are the people learning, interacting and the uplifts the challenges we face together but to know your not alone and even though at moments we may lose ourselves someone is there for you.

Most of the people, patients and their families. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It’s a fight to get time off. You are at the mercy of your Directors instructions and if they leave and the next one doesn’t know what they’re doing, they lie about and skip write ups to get you out. HR takes the word of Directors and higher ups above your 7 years of service. Not to be mean but it’s a bit of a mess. Excellent for patients, bad for imanagers and lower.

Stressful, Directors and VPs need to be taught more. Very, Very stressful, always understaffed.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Mornings talk to overnight team, fix any issues. Answer emails, fix day crews issues as they come up, meetings, file incident reports, work on schedules, train team on new procedures, update directory, on call lists for departments, and any alarm changes for the hospital.

Was a tech at retail previously. It's pretty much still retail with a few hospital nuances. A lot of the patients are hospital staff, but there are a handful of troublesome patients. 10 hr shifts and you're stuck at the same spot the entire shift. So imagine pickup for a whole week doing 500-700 volume a day. High turnaround for techs and pharmacists should tell you something about the pharmacy. Lots of drama and management plays favorites. Techs were unreliable during my time there and failed to deliver minimum competencies which led to several instances that were escalated to the pharmacy director. All of them based on a lack of communication, which is ironic considering how much the staff talk and gossip. A lot of new grad pharmacists as well and it shows. Overall an okay experience, but no room for growth and a stepping stone. Slightly better pay than retail, but staffing issues, drama, and lack of a competent team make it hard to stay.
