The best part of working at BVHS is providing quality care to patients. Many of the associates and doctors truly care for their patients and work hard to make sure they are well taken care of.

The main problem with BVHS is management. I've working within multiple specialty practices and they all seem to have management issues. High employee turn-over rate because management does not value their good, hard-working employees. I was hired in under 2 part-time positions but still working 40 hours a week, so BVHS could get around providing me with benefits, days off, vacation. I agreed to these terms as a temporary measure with the promise of changing to full time, but even after 1 year and multiple requests/emails/meetings, things are always "still in progress." 

When employees quit or go on maternity leave their job responsibilities are added on to already overworked employees.  The environment I worked in was very friendly among co-workers and they were always willing to pitch in and help out. Though it becomes frustrating when these additional responsibilities pile up and are never appreciated by management (zero aknowledgement). Rules are not followed, patient privacy is violated (room doors are kept open to people walking in the hallways). When problems are brought to management from associates or even providers, no changes are ever made. Excuses are commonly made with the mpst frequent on being "these things take time" or "I'm working on it." 

Unprofessional environment by management where formal emails are ignored, and managers will often sneak around the office or listen in on phone calls to catch you "doing something wrong." A lot of other reviewers mentioned micro-managing as an issue but I can say the opposite is true for my manager. There are no meetings between the manager and staff (not even monthly or quarterly meetings). We used to at least get weekly email updates with our schedules since so many people would quit and the staff would end up rotate covering the additonal responsibilities. However these emails were always incorrect and filled with errors, and eventually they stopped alltogether. Yearly reviews were only completed for some of the staff, yet we were all required to sign off that the manager completed our reviews and discussed them with us.

The best advice for any new employees is the be a silent hard-worker and stay unnoticed. I truly tries to find ways to make improvements to any problems around the clinic and was always met with retaliation.

Patient Financial Services at Riverside Suites, which includes billing, pre-certification, and credit/collections has the worst management team in the entire health system. The department that once functioned as an excellent team has been destroyed by poor management skills. Management shows blatant favoritism and actually contributes to the negative and slightly hostile work environment. They encourage drama by allowing inappropriate comments to be spread; in fact, they even participate in the behavior by discussing it outside the department with other associates! They treat the employees like they’re children or criminals by spying or eavesdropping around corners so they can catch someone “doing something wrong” like saying good morning or how was your weekend to a coworker. When they don’t hear anyone violating the ever changing rules in the department, they try to enlist other associates. Yes, they call newer associates in and ask them to be their “narcs!” And, everyone is told hospital wide to come forward with any issues so they can be addressed by management. Yeah, right! Issues either get swept under the rug or thrown back in your face no matter how high up in the organization you take them. Then, you’re treated even worse, so the morale just keeps plummeting down. Even when employees go above and beyond, there’s no positive reinforcement or recognition (unless it’s one of the favorites). It’s a very depressing environment to work in day after day when the four women leading Patient Financial Services don’t show the employees any respect and truly don’t care about them. After I turned in my notice that I had found a new career with the possibility of advancement, only one of the four congatulated me or even said goodbye to me on my last day. These are supposed to be professionals, right? Two of them only glared at me and never said a word, which really didn’t surprise me because that’s their normal behavior. A large number of associates in this department are actively seeking other employment, and I wish them luck. I loved the work I did and many of my coworkers, but working in such a stressful environment was taking a toll on my health.

Hanco EMS is a private, fast-paced job that keeps your skills fresh.  Hanco is contracted for all of the City of Findlay and a majority of Hancock County for 9-1-1 services.  We cover public events such as concerts, sporting events, community events and many others.  We also are contracted with BGSU for all sporting and public events.  We also do non-emergency interfacility transports however we are paid an extra stipend every two weeks for any transport over 60 miles!  Extra money for just doing our jobs!!  24 hours on with 48 hours off is great!  There is also a 12-hour, 3 day a week option too.  We have all of the best equipment available including 10 ALS ambulances, 2 Paramedic intercept vehicles, 2 water rescue boats, a Bobcat utility response vehicle and a golf cart.  We also have Stryker Power Cots and Power Load systems, Zoll X-series monitors, Lucas II CPR devices and electronic reporting.  We also have available to us 100% tuition reimbursement for current employees that wish to take EMT, Advanced EMT and/or Paramedic school, as well as nursing school if so desired.  Hanco has in-house instructors for all continuing education, ALCS, PALS, BLS/CPR, PHTLS, full refresher classes, etc. on site as well at no cost to us!  Trucks and equipment are well maintained and if we need a specific piece of equipment, management is not opposed to getting it for us, within reason.  I have never worked for a company that has offered annual merit base bonuses, annual percentage wage increases or birthday pay until now.  Yes!  You paid 8 extra hours in your birthday month on top of the hours you already worked!!  We get paid vacation time, paid holidays and paid sick time.  Health care, dental and vision benefits are pretty good too.  You can chose which package is right for you and your family.  There is also a retirement plan that the Health System will pay in to.  I cannot say enough good about my employer and I would recommend working here to anyone that is interested in EMS, including my family!

You will start off loving your job, and enjoy helping the community but that starts to dwindle when you realize what it really is all about. Favoritism is so evident that it is appalling. If you are not one of the puppets/golden children, you will slowly start to realize it. If you bring up safety concerns and/or policies being disobeyed especially if it is one of the favorites, you are told you are throwing mud, or too concerned with extra-curricular activities. Even though its a safety concern for the crews and obviously a policy is put in place for a reason and that is not so it could be repeatedly broken time and time again. But on the other hand, you will be belittled, and wrote up for personal feelings, or fabricated stories. They are constantly understaffed due to the turnover rate (morale, disrespect, exhaustion, and finding better jobs.) When there is open shifts, or events due to the lack of staffing and overbooking you are shamed into covering those shifts. A lot, not all of management disrespects a lot of the employees especially veterans behind their backs. They will speak badly of people, call them liars, and when you do quit or leave you get put on the "Hanco Hate Club" list. Paramedics make less than the paramedics in the ER but the excuse is that their paramedics get overtime even though the ER paramedics do too and the Hanco Paramedics have more responsibilities considering they are autonomous and ER paramedics have the help of nurses, techs, and doctors. The hanco paramedics also have to do all the maintenance, ie: mow, garden, shovel snow, drywall, body work and mechanical work to ambulances. The crews DO get an additional 50 dollars for trips that are over 60 miles; but money can only make you happy for so long when you are going everywhere in the state of Ohio all shift long. 
This is just a fair warning that you do not want to join the ranks of all the unhappy employees that work at Hanco.

This was with out a doubt the absolute worst place I have ever worked in my entire life. The Director was having an inappropriate (physical) relationship with subordinate staff in office, during office hours!  When Several of us reported it to HR, they hastily attempted to  sweep it under the rug, and there were no repercussions-for the Director- those of us who were brave enough to come forward and complain however were relentlessly harassed daily by the Human resources director, to the point where we have all at this point quit. They are sick demented people working in the Upper management level and Human Resources. The lengths they went to in order to attempt to cover up what was obvious to all of us was truly revolting. They need to clean house and start with the human resources director, Never in my life have I met such a morally repugnant low life human being. 
The "Management" or "Leadership" was constantly gone, or having "closed door meetings" ( which was essentially the female managers having a gossip forum, the walls were thin, so you could hear all the nasty, and completely inappropriate things they were saying about their subordinate employees, nothing to do with actual work, just personal gab and insulting verbiage) so there was never anyone available to answer questions, or take a phone call from a livid patient. Always given excuses as to why they can't do anything to help out. Just absolutely disengaged and incompetent. No focus on patient care or doing the right thing, Too busy planning their next vacation, or gossiping. I remember in particular one manager yelling at the receptionist, who was at her desk taking phone calls, she asked a manager to talk to the patient, and her response was "I'm on a break, I'm salaried so I can take as many breaks as I want!"
Not to mention all the wasted resources that place goes through. I can't begin to tell you how wasteful they are with the CMS funding they receive. Just an absolute terrible place.

Endoscopy staff nurses and manager are very kind, accepting of new staff and grateful for my contribution

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management hyper-control of staff, work schedule, unfairness of policy, inflexible, poor leadership skills, not allowing staff autonomy or recognizing our capability, hence, restricting our practice, not listening or following through, playing games of blame when they don’t succeed with patient flow and billing in outpatient setting. Running an inefficient business with free procedures and equipment starts  without billing and educating patient when it is a fully billable service and then blaming the certified nurse educator for reduced patient numbers and billing issues or overall system financial concerns. Repeated management lack of support and overlooked management manipulation and lack of knowledge leading to poor patient flow, misuse of staff, stifling of nursing skill, failure of programs and services, lack of adequate pt education, billing failure, unjust firing of staff, forcing higher paid experienced staff out and so much more!! 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Overall, there is a false culture of “ caring for a lifetime “ that does not include the employees. I have witnessed the mistreatment of many long-term employees over the past 30 years being forced out after age 50 for unjust and even fabricated reasons. Pay is not competitive and higher education and  certification in nursing is not recognized with additional pay or autonomy of practice. Policy is unfairly applied by managers or left to discretion of managers leading to various power play and unfairness.

Hanco was a nice place to work until the hospital took it over. Focus went from being covering the city, which is contracted (which is constantly violated), and county 911 calls to doing transports when the hospital demanded even if the patient did not qualify. Company moral was at an all time low due to management and the relationships between officers and employees showing favoritism. The "chief" made it very clear that unless you fit in to the hospital mold then you were not welcome to work for them. Rules are only for certain employees and easily broken if you're in the favorite group.  Numerous dedicated, hard working employees have left there due to the management, leaving the bottom of the barrel or others who are too scared to leave or say anything due to the retaliation that happens. "Open and honest communication" is encouraged unless you have an opinion or idea that differs from the "Paragod" boss. Sadly, what used to be about great patient care has become about fitting the hospital mold and being a mouthless puppet that only does what it's told.... 
Perspective new employees are given a false idea of what the company is actually like. Crews are required to take out of town transports at night that are not medically necessary, or that could easily stay at the facility until a fresh crew is on, to satisfy the hospital and keep their ratings high, resulting in danger to crew safety. If it is mentioned that the crew is too tired then there is retaliation later. 
The crews are overworked but still looked for ways to have fun together, after the "chief" was gone. Crews on certain shifts were like family together, which was nice.

A 26 bed ED, seeing over 40,000 patients a year. Level 3 trauma.

When I first started in the ED we had a Director and a Manager and it was a family environment.

I was a team player went in whenever they called me, night and day.I loved my co-workers, Physicians and Director but they are no longer there. I worked for 9.5 years in the ED and loved it. Found it was my passion. We changed Directors 4 times while I was there.

Communication was lacking top down and bottom up. It got lost in the middle. People were frustrated, understaffed and over worked. When people spoke up they became targets. As long as you went with the flow and kept your mouth shut you were good. That didn't set with many for they left and are still leaving.

A typical day of work started 7 am. to 7 pm. It was not uncommon to be called in early to assist nights, or work over related to insufficient staffing. Having days off were hard to come by, staff were always calling off and you would be called in. We hit the floor running and kept running all day. No time to eat or drink, and we were lucky to have time to go to the bathroom. This is related to being understaffed. You are unable to leave a critical patient or have another cover you when everyone is dealing with critical patients.

I found that with the changes being made with Medicare and insurance. More people out of work influenced the number and acuity of patients. The health of the patients were worse and we had a larger influx of low acuity patients for they were unable to go to doctors no insurance. Along with the physicians would no longer see them related to bills accumulated.

Very clicky on each unit. Gossip, unorganized, no time management and always picking up slack of other coworkers who don’t do proper work duties. Can take it up with management but they all hang out outside of work,  lot of them won’t address issues going on because it’s a friend.  Nurses won’t help answer call lights and read books all night, have feet propped up on wows, or watching videos on the tablets while one tech is running and entire unit alone!!!  Secretaries sleep at the front desk covered in a blanket or do homework and or watch movies while families and physicians are present. Other techs don’t do proper patient care, have families and other staff letting managers know and nothings gets done with said tech but your good work never gets noticed. This hospital is turning more into a memory hospital with patient sitters in the rooms than we have techs on the floor to help assist other care of patients needs. No pay increases!!!  Not a lot of different cultures present. Expensive cafeteria food for staff and families. Overly priced . You will never feel appreciated at this company. It’s for them and your are a replaceable entity. High turnover. Lots of PRN staff who never work and always short staffed. I really have nothing to say good about this hospital or my experience here except I met and was able to take care is many wonderful patients. They were they reason I tried to stay. But I couldn’t deal with not being honored and appreciated for my work and not getting merit raises. 

Upper management at BVHS does not care about their employees and treats them like dirt. I have a close friend who is an excellent and well respected RN on her unit for many years. This friend of mine went on to get her Family Nurse Practitioner degree. After she got her degree she interviewed and was offered a job working as a FNP in the health system. However, at the last second upper management put their foot down and told her she could never work as an NP within the health system and they refused to offer any explanation. Instead of hiring her they opted to hire temporary locum physicians who were sub-par at best and they ran into many issues. It's unfortunate because the patients are the ones that suffered because of this. I would never want one of my family members receiving care here. They have perfectly qualified employees within their own health system, yet they go out of their way to hire externally. It almost seems as if their hiring process is more of a popularity contest than it is about hiring the most qualified candidates. I have colleagues who are excellent providers within the Findlay who have had similar experiences when working with Blanchard Valley. There are a lot of great people that work at the health system, but if there is one person in management who does not like you then they will not hesitate to get rid of you, no matter how good of an employee you are. I felt obligated to share this story on here to urge providers in the area and providers-to-be to air with caution when considering BVHS for employment. It's not worth the stress, there are plenty of other places in the area to work with better job security.
