When offered a position at Blue Cross Blue Shield of AZ, I was EXTREMELY excited! They painted a picture of literally the perfect career! After training, this all changed. They transfer you to a worn down, poorly maintained building. It's dark, and it's dingy. Don't get me wrong, it is a GREAT job as far as the work you do, the people you work with, and job security. There are just a few things that contributed to my leaving.

The company fails to employ enough people to keep up with the workload. As a result, they are always behind, and require overtime. Mandatory OT is 100% mandatory. No exceptions! This can be during the week, on weekends, and on some holidays. Planning things for family becomes almost impossible.

Compensation was descent, yes. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get your annual review, and I went two years without any type of merit increase because of this. Job security - well, it's there! They've got so much work that terminations are pretty rare. Advancement - not much of an option from what I was able to see. When there were advancements, it was a popularity contest, and those who were "friends" with the superiors always got the positions.

Management is a complete mess! They are just as overworked as the agents, and cannot keep up with their personnel. Most of them are incapable of making necessary decisions, and none of the managers that I'd approached seemed at all interested in the stress that their employees were going through on the job. When notified of it, those agents were dismissed, and nothing was addressed.

There are many pros and cons that I'm not sure I have time for at the moment but the negatives mostly have to do with personal factors like the position I'm in is just not the best fit for me as it causes me to be stretched way too thin (too much variety in projects, not enough working with things I'm really good at).  Too much multitasking and things that add overhead.    Also there is part of the company that has rather woke leanings and that can be a pain in certain situations, although there are enough people on both sides to get a fairly decent balance.  You still have to put up with some woke nonsense in trainings.
The team I work with is absolutely wonderful, my immediate supervisor is extremely helpful and over the top understanding.    Pay is  good and bonuses can be great.  Very flexible as we work from home almost 100%.  Work can be very very challenging and mindnumbing as a lot of it is extremely complex and dealing with a lot of issues involving a wide variety of programming languages, databases, messy data, chaotic everything.  
Work/life balance can get really bad if you don't control it.  It takes an insane amount of discipline to be able to make sure you have a good work/life balance because everybody works at odd hours and if you get online, you're fair game to be contacted.  It's pretty stable overall and a great company.

BCBSAZ has a hybrid work schedule, and your need to be in the office or work from home, depends on you, your position and your manager.   
BCBSAZ really takes care of their employees, makes their employees feel like that are valued and a part of the success of the company.  

The benefits aren't the best, but Elite management listens. to what the employee's need, or ask for, and make changes as they deem worthy.  Their PTO definitely is not something to brag about, it needs to be relooked at.  However they do provide 9 paid holiday's and 2 floating holidays each year, in addition to paid days off.    If you chose the high deductible health plan coverage, they will fund money into your HSA account every year, (the amount depends on your income) - Most companies I have worked for in the past do not give any donation to your HSA account, let alont the generousity of BCBSAZ.  

Overall they are a wonderful company to work for.  If you want to feel appreciated by the big boss's and feel like your contribution to the business is everyday is appreciated and matters, then fill out an application & best of luck to you. A typical day consist of receiving emails and calls from providers about claim issues or a request to negotiate their current rates.  Meetings monthly with internal staff and providers.  The workplace is very friendly and everyone is willing to help you.  However, the work can be stressful at times because you receive a lot of issues that should be handled by Customer Service but they send the calls to Network for resolution.  You really don't want to transfer the calls back so you're caught up in resolving an issue that is typically a customer service issue not contracting issue.  There could be more supportive management in that aspect of the job.  I have learned a lot about the company when compared to my prior employment experience that has made it work better for me, however, quite a big difference.  I'm always welcome to any change so that doesn't bother me it's just not having the right tools to do what you need to do can sometimes be a challenge, especially since I set my goals high because I try to do what's best for the company to ensure excellence.  It's also a personal reflection of myself so I take my job very serious.

Typical day answering phones, question, billing, claims, eligibilities, pharmacy inquires, taking walk-ins.
Performs account reconciliation, billing functions, and payment posting.
Responds to internal and external questions and requests.
Performs clerical duties such as sending, ID cards to members ensuring compliance with CMS timelines and guidelines; maintaining member files, etc.
Processes, researches and responds to member issues related to disenrollment requests, claims issues and changing primary care physician.
Identifies circumstances of dissatisfaction and offers appropriate opportunities for resolution to ensure maximum member retention.
Taking grievance and appeals and route to appropriate departments.
Reports new issues to management for appropriate follow up. Assembles disenrollment data and provides reports for trending and process/quality improvement opportunities.
Collaborates with appropriate departments to share ongoing issues/concerns to promote proactive process improvement in areas such as misrepresentation of plan coverage, clarity of benefits, and physician treatment concerns.

I enjoyed the customer service work with the clients that would call for Medicare.  Unfortunately, I was to be paid 14.50/Hr plus 10.00 for each sale and with enough sales a 900.00 bonus.  My license for Michigan did not show up until two days before the end of annual enrollment.  They kept the individuals that made the most sales for ACA and of course I couldn't make the sales.  The typical day at work was being on the phone all day speaking to the elderly and disabled wanting to know about our product.  I went through extensive 2 week training for Medicare and understand the rules for selling.  You cannot call them unless they ask for a return call etc.  Management was fantastic and fun.  It did get very busy and we were working, not too much outside conversation.  The job was very easy and I have done debt collection before and this is the same, just talking and helping people.  I had QA testing my calls and out of 9 tests, I received 100% score for 8 calls and 1 at 99% score.  I also won a gift card for the most productive calls.

Managing frequent change and shifting priorities in a large, complex organization can be stressful, especially when balancing speed with quality.

The work environment is professional and mission-driven, with many collaborative and supportive teams. Like most large organizations, experiences can vary by department, but there is a shared focus on improving healthcare outcomes.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The day often includes coordinating with multiple teams, responding to changing priorities, and making time for both execution and continuous improvement.

A typical day of work   Incoming calls from members and providers are handled.  Calls are audited.  What I learned:  Medical insurance terminology.  Management:  Incompetent managers micro-manage which creates a stressful atmosphere and exhibit favoritism. Workplace Culture:  Stressful and low morale.; micromanaging, trying to schedule paid time off is difficult and favoritism.  The hardest part of the job  Auditing and ridiculous goals  and scores are Managers sometimes demonstrate poor management decisions.  Managers do not take responsibility for their poor decisions and are quick to blame others.
The hardest part of the job:  Micromanaging every part of a worker's day.  Breaks are 10 mins even though the restrooms are very far away.  The most enjoyable part of the job:  Co-workers are always willing to help.

Key campaigns include: I Decide (Brochures, print ads, web banner ads, direct mail, TV/radio, e-mail blast, billboard and landing pages); Productivity in the Workplace (Brochures, print ads posters and direct mail); and HealthyBlue Healthy and Wellness (Brochures, print ads, direct mail, posters, invitations, flyers landing pages and website).

I have put in over 20 years to the company dedicated and loyal. I enjoyed my co-workers. It is very important to have great communication with co-workers and management. I was hired in 1992 as a claim processor for about 1yr 1/2 then moved up to account representative for another 1 yr 1/2 and my last postion there was Quality Control Internal Auditor for 17 years with promotion within the department. When I had first started at the company there were bonuses, stabelization during christmas, employees picnic, employees christmas dinner and 401K. In the last two years that I was working there the company now only offers the 401k. I loved my job and what I do.
