The best part of this job is the coworkers—they’re supportive, hardworking, and create a great sense of camaraderie unfortunately the management often ruined the flow. 

The job had potential, and the work itself was simple and could have been enjoyable. However, poor management from both the assistant and general manager made the experience unbearable. The back room was often a chaotic mess due to an overwhelming number of donations and not enough employees to handle them. While the team worked well together and supported one another, the management completely undermined the work environment.

Both the assistant and general manager were frequently rude, creating a hostile and uncomfortable atmosphere. They came across as insecure and lazy, unwilling to take initiative or support employees. This lack of professionalism and effort not only made the job harder but also dragged down morale, driving employees away. We would hire new employees only for them to leave within a month, directly due to the toxic leadership. 

Despite multiple complaints about the assistant and general managers, no action was taken to address the issues. Significant changes in leadership are desperately needed at this location to improve operations and employee satisfaction. With better management, this could be a great role, but as it stands, it’s an unpleasant place to work.

This job, despite the medical benefits, was draining. I ended up having to compensate for lesser workers, and ran myself ragged on a daily basis. As soon as you walk in, it is go-so-go. They don't like idleness, and any small mistake can cause management to suddenly treat you as if you are completely incompetent.

The hours are long, and management expects you to stay late. The physical labor is constant and you are regularly moving large, heavy, and highly awkward piece of furniture into small spaces.

Management is almost non-existent. There is no manager, just an assistant manager, leaving blame on all of the employees. The associates are either amazing, or they're a nightmare, there is no in between.

There is no proper work/life balance. The only way you get that, is if you suck up to the upper management and make yourself completely indispensable (as I did).

The most enjoyable part of the job was helping people who were down and out. But the benefits of this do not come even close to balancing out the physical exhaustion and constant stress.

There has been a new CEO since April 2018. Turnover has been tremendous since her arrival. Layoffs  AND walkouts!! Lots of changes, less flexibility, new dress code. Focus is completely on growing business but little to no regard for staff... eventually patient care will also suffer due to high turnover

Those providing direct patient care are wonderful AND are the reason for our good reputation in the community. It has pretty much become impossible for most people to stay  and many are looking for new jobs. It’s sad to see so many people who have been here for years leave. 

The Board of Directors made a huge mistake with their choice for a new CEO. I hope that in the future this will be a great place to work again but it will most likely be after her departure. The work itself is wonderful.

My job description as a case manager is to coordinate care for the terminally ill patients as well as support to the families.

I have learned a great deal of management skills. Case Managers are responsible for initiating plan of cares as well as updating them periodically as the patients' condition requires.

Always in need of a clinical supervisor; therefore, management 
was not favorable, since the case managers were left without support.

The hardest part of my job is balancing work with personal life and responsibilities. Being a full-time case manager requires constant phone calls and interacting with families as well as other co-workers. "Never off from work"

The absolute most enjoyable part of being a case manager is helping the patients as well as their family members in such a distressing time.

Working at blue ridge was a dream come true for a passionate thrifter- discounted items, first pick at what comes in, but especially during the summer, expect to spend many hours outside sitting through donations- most of which can’t be sold. People will drop off their trash pretty much. If they’re understaffed, expect to be on register for 8 hours with no chair or in the back room doing back breaking work (again, no chairs or stools allowed when tagging clothes, sorting, etc). Before I left, they changed the hours so the store closed at 7 but you couldn’t leave until 8. We didn’t get a say in that change. Overall, it was enjoyable to price home goods and make shelves and everything, but when there’s crowds it can be overwhelming. 

I worked at Blue Ridge Hospice for a little over three years.  I enjoyed my work with this agency and was upset when I had to leave.  I worked closely with terminally ill patients and their families.  My work in the care of these patients was a supportive role.  I provided much support to the patient and to their families to include emotional support and community support.  The goal for Blue Ridge Hospice is to Brighten Life's Journey; and this is what I did.  The focus was on improving a patients quality of life not quantity.  This job required me to be self motivated and organized.  I had a supervisor; however, she was at a different site.  I feel that I worked well with my co-workers as we were a team of professionals providing care to our patients.

The turnover in multiple positions reflects the poor leadership in upper management. At one point, some of the field nurses had 27+ patients on caseload and the admission nurses have four hours of paperwork per patient. The promises of PTO and holidays are only for upper management as they hold themselves to a different standard of rules. There’s too many Chiefs and not enough Indians, as they will increase your workload to lessen theirs. Training is lacking, besides their weeklong PowerPoint orientation. Run don’t walk. They will make plenty of promises upfront during your interview, but then reserve the right to change your job responsibilities at any given time.. 

The first year at Blue Ridge was very teamwork approach and then the management started to change and thus began a not so fun place to be employed, because the focus was taken off of patient care and short cuts were taking place, and many things were causing a lot of negativity. Some folks were looking out for self instead of the overall big picture of the company, and what the main focus was, the care of the patients. That alone just wasn't right and many folks that had been employed for a while we're starting to look elsewhere for employment.

Things are not as they seem here. Wouldn't even know where to begin. Absolutely unqualified people in management who receive special treatment and exceptions where less important employees are micromanaged, overworked, and under appreciated. New CEO continues to clean out good, hardworking staff in favor of her own connections without examining corruption in management even when notified. Grievances aren't taken seriously or even filed. 

The one pro is that they hire great people, but then treat them poorly. The most positive part of the experience was solid coworkers.

Clean sweep administratively a few years ago, more stable for the past year, but a new CEO and many administrative changes are creating a "purge-like" atmosphere currently.  Staff are leaving, long time employees in staff and administration are in new positions, some at lower pay rates, clumsy handling in notifying staff of changes.  Expect a number of job opportunities in the next few months.  Pay rate is lower than might be expected for Northern Virginia area, but may be acceptable if commute into the DC area is an issue.  Co-workers are a very good group.
