I've worked at Brave Health for about a year now and I can honestly say I have worked harder this year than at any previous job I’ve had. And I can also say that I have absolutely LOVED every second of it.

Brave Health is an extremely fast paced, technology based environment that is constantly improving and iterating. Things change all the time. But that’s actually a good thing! It’s so refreshing to work somewhere that is always looking for the best way to do something. Whether it’s subtle changes to the scheduling workflows for our “front desk” Access Team, creating more peer support structures for our providers, or massive overhauls to our systems, everything is with the goal of improving our processes to then further improve our patients’ care. Management is super receptive to feedback and really does listen to it even if they can't act on it immediately.

Since COVID, mental health care and access to that care is more important than ever. Brave has grown an unbelievable amount even since I started last year. New positions are being created all the time, new processes are being tested and implemented, we’re further expanding into new states like Texas and Illinois. It’s an exciting place to be with something new happening all the time.

While innate technological skills aren't necessarily a requirement, they sure do help a lot. Because we are a virtual clinic we have an opportunity to reach people with telehealth who might not otherwise have access to mental health care. But also because we are a virtual clinic, using technology is the only constant and it is impossible to separate the treatment from the tech since it’s the very thing that gives us the ability to reach our patients. So it really helps to at least appreciate technology, even if you don't love it.

All Brave Health employees work remotely and they do it from all over the country. As you might expect, this provides an opportunity to meet and work with a wonderfully diverse group of people. The variety of personal interests and professional backgrounds is staggering and it really contributes positively to Brave's ability to reach and impact our patients. Brave management really cares about Brave employees and I am often encouraged to utilize unused time off. I get regular check ins from my supervisor to ensure that I am not overwhelmed or bored and I know that I can reach out to literally anyone in the company without getting rebuffed.

As a member of Brave’s training team, it’s shameless self promotion, but not untrue to tell you that we have one of the most supportive, amazing, and helpful training teams out there. This is not an easy job and we recognize that. There’s a lot of systems and process information to absorb and the learning curve is very steep. But we are here for you every step of the way; from your first day, to your first patient, to your first personal technology crisis when you don’t know what to do because you haven’t had this situation come up yet and you are scheduled with a patient and you’re panicking. But don’t panic! We’re here to help.

Despite the physical distance between Brave staff members, because of some of the technology we utilize, I've never felt like it is an anti-social environment whatsoever. There is a constant buzz of communication taking place. There are lots of moving pieces at Brave and our tech is key in helping everyone coordinate and play their role. We use multiple programs to keep in contact with each other and our patients so comfort with technology helps here as well.

Truly the best part of working at Brave though is the feeling that it’s not just a company and not just a job. There is a real sense of purpose and community. Even among those not directly interacting with patients. Brave is actively trying to provide and expand mental health care to Medicaid recipients, which is one of the most traditionally underserved populations. They are actively trying to expand that care into new states and new communities by working with community partners and assisting our providers with getting credentialed with new insurances and licensed in new states. 

Hearing the CEO speak at the regular All-Staff meetings about the company’s progress and her plans for the organization’s future is so inspiring. Her passion for taking care of our patients is completely palpable and her excitement is infectious. You can feel the genuine appreciation for each and every one of us that we're there contributing to achieving this amazing goal of providing care to patients who need it.

Brave is fast paced and the expectations are high because we deal with real patients with real issues so the stakes themselves are high. But it’s an amazing place to work and the support structure is there for anyone who will accept help and is willing to put in the effort it takes.

I started as a Therapist and have seen myself and 5 other colleagues receive career opportunities here in the last 6-18 months. We strive to provide an environment where providers can learn and grow whether a new therapist or someone who has many years of experience or specialties. We have worked hard to create group pods (treatment teams) and learning centers so therapists can experience the wisdom of their peers, and start to learn more about an area they may have interest in. We cover fees for becoming licensed in other states and do as much of the heavy lifting as possible to assist with that process internally. The mission to bring mental healthcare to anyone, anywhere, and that is what drew most of us here. Many of us have worked in environments that did not serve all kinds of populations. At Brave, we serve those on Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance, which allows providers to work with a variety of populations. We can feel really good, like we are actually making a difference.
 
In a telehealth model, we all work from home across the country and while we provide strong training across our systems, and tools, with great success, most providers do not come from a background of executing their jobs using video/audio and needing to be great at capturing notes in real time. We expect a learning curve, and offer support and suggestions, along the way. Most providers are at baseline after a week of training on systems, processes, and procedures that we provide. Like all jobs, this job is perfect for many providers but not a match for some. Our expectation is that providers average no less than 30 face to face patient hours per week. That means you will see 8 scheduled patients and/or patient activities placed on your calendar for a day but with re-schedules, cancelations, and no shows, the net goal is 30 patient facing encounters a week. Some days, if there are no cancelations, you may see 8 patients but that is extremely rare. Other days your 8 scheduled may have dropped to 4 confirmed, in which case we will add a couple more to your calendar to ensure you meet 30 for the week. Everyone is assigned a Subject Matter Expert/Sr Clinician AND a Clinical Supervisor willing to help to assure success. We have a training department who scores high marks from new hires for helpfulness and they will provide coaching as well. Our company has grown very rapidly but that is a good thing as it means we are serving far more of the patients who deserve a chance to receive help. It affords us the opportunity to serve those patients in rural areas who, without a telehealth option, would struggle to locate services. It can absolutely feel overwhelming to see your calendar reflecting 8 appointments for the day, but we have never had a case where a provider has actually seen 8 patients in a day, every day. We are much closer to the 30 a week we aim for.
As a company in growth mode, excited to serve more patients who really do need services without long waits, we iterate on our systems and procedures as we grow so the people who do best here are people who embrace growth and change because that is how we serve our patients better. We don't get everything right but our hearts are in the right place and we think we have done a lot of unique things to provide providers with a learning and growth environment that just has not been nearly as possible in any of the other environments I have worked in. Working in the high-paced environment at Brave Health has been an intense learning experience. The company offers a great deal of growth potential and benefits, making it an attractive choice for those willing to commit. The work environment is undoubtedly fast-paced, allowing employees to learn and adapt quickly. However, certain aspects of the job, such as the workload, expectations, and additional responsibilities, have raised concerns during my time here.

While Brave Health provides a platform for growth, it comes at a cost. The requirement to see a minimum of six to eight clients daily can be overwhelming, especially for Associate Therapists. This places a significant demand on time and energy, often extending to unpaid hours for tasks like peer reviews and administrative duties. The structure of the workload, including working eight hours a day and dealing with administrative tasks, feels challenging and, at times, unsustainable. The lack of flexibility, particularly for Associate Therapists, contrasts with the perceived benefits offered to Licensed Therapists.

Support from my direct manager has been noteworthy, contributing to a positive learning experience. However, there is an inherent feeling that the company’s focus on Associate Therapists is driven by financial motives, rather than fostering a balanced and supportive work environment. The requirement to see eight clients daily, combined with additional responsibilities, makes achieving work-life balance difficult.

The company’s potential could be optimized by creating more flexibility and support for Associate Therapists. For instance, allowing interns to work part-time, choosing their training modules, and focusing solely on therapy could contribute to a healthier work environment. This approach would be more conducive to the well-being of employees and the quality of patient care.

In conclusion, Brave Health offers valuable growth opportunities and benefits, but the intense workload, lack of flexibility, and administrative demands pose challenges. There is potential for a more balanced and supportive work environment, particularly for Associate Therapists, to maximize the overall experience for both employees and clients.

This company has a revolving door for new hires because the burnout starts during training. Training is provided by individuals who are not clinicians and have no clue about the realities of the clinical world.

You are required to see 8 patients per day and toggle between 6 systems. The supervisors are terrible and unsupportive and will reprimand you for not responding to their emails and chat messages although  you’re in the middle
of a session.

The company accepts mostly medicaid and you will be blamed for high no-show rates. They will tell you that you need more training and throw you in a training class vs acknowledging that they don’t have a great marketing strategy.

As a Clinician, you will have a ton of unrealistic expectations to complete admin tasks including marketing and outreaching to patients before and after sessions, scheduling and rescheduling your patients, following up with patients who are not scheduled, completing discharges, responding to patient emails and text messages, and responding to your supervisor and colleagues messages with no extra time to complete these tasks unless you have a no-show or late cancellation because again you work 8 hours per day and are scheduled 8 sixty minute sessions per day.

When asked how you are to get all of these tasks completed while seeing 8 patients, the supervisors are trained to gaslight you by telling you that all of the other therapists are able to get it done which is a complete lie.

You are required to do assessments on all patients and determine if they are appropriate for telehealth. When they are not, you are still forced to admit them and provide therapy.

The EHR system that they use is extremely slow, creating a barrier to get your notes completed efficiently during sessions.

The bonus is so unrealistically structured that no one ever earns it. You literally have to average 6 patients per day for 3-4 months consistently in order to qualify. With their high no-show rates this is nearly impossible.

I started applying for new jobs my 1st week of employment with Brave and the only reason why I lasted for 6 months is because that’s the time it took for me to secure a new remote position.

Overall, this is not a good company to work for as they do not care about the mental health of their
employees. Their focus is money and being able to bill under any means necessary. Please spare yourself the stress and do not apply.

Brave Health is by far the best employer I have had the opportunity to work with. They offer a great work from home schedule that allows for a work life balance free from long commutes or need to report to an office every single day. They invest in their employees by offering individual supervision toward licensure, group supervision to consult with other clinicians, and team meetings to discuss how clinical work connects with other parts of the company to improve client experience. 

Brave Health is innovative in their approach to client care. They are always looking for feedback on ways they can improve processes, make things more streamlined and more accessible for clients and clinicians - this means that changes happen quickly and they happen often. Clinicians that love change, thrive on continuous feedback and being a part of organizational development - this is the place for you!  Got ideas? Brave Health has very competitive pay, they offer a generous benefit stipend for employees and their dependents, as well as a generous time off allotment every year so you are able to invest in yourself outside of work as well. The added benefits of in house supervision, opportunity to obtain licensure and to be promoted from within - I really have not seen these kind of opportunities offered by community mental health agencies, non profits or any major mental health provider.  

If you are a fast learner, self sufficient, tech savvy, excited about eliminating barriers to quality mental health care, driven by personal, professional and organizational growth - This is the place for you! 

REGISTERED INTERNS BEWARE - NEW CLIENTS BEWARE:
if you're not licensed, DO NOT WORK HERE. 

The job is not only overwhelming but you get micromanaged. You have to meet a quote of at least 7 clients per day and if you don't, you're cut off and fired on the spot. They will tell you in the interview, as they did with me, that they "know REALISTICALLY the clients cancel and you will average 5-6 a day." but as my supe kept telling me, at the end of the day it's a business so they DO NOT CARE FOR YOU OR THE CLIENTS. 

They expect you to get notes done within the hour and no later than the end of your 8 hour day, but the work load, especially contacting clients how they demand, takes more than 8 hours in a day, especially when you're required to facilitate a support group. 

Here's a kicker, while they continue to expand to different states and continue to hire therapists (and fire associate therapists), they contracted a  third party qualified supervision for interns, but they only pay for 3 supe hours a month, anymore and you have to pay out of pocket.  But they will have senseless meetings about 2-3x/month that take an hour of that day, which affects your numbers. They don't care about your boundaries as a provider, your job is to have 8 hours filled every day, even though there's not enough clients for all the therapists they hire AND there ARE slow downs on intakes. But at the end of the day it's still a business and it's your fault if your hours are not filled. 

They also don't transition clients how they ethically should. They fire therapist so much that I have had clients that have switched therapists 3-5 times and they tell the client last minute "Your therapist unexpectedly left Brave" when in reality they cut them off. They are literally letting go of GREAT therapists because the higher ups need their money. 

Something I always found funny, you get 2 weeks of PTO per year, but you accrue 2.5 hours of sick visit per pay, so about 5hrs a month of sick visit. So if you call out without sick hours, then you use your PTO, then you have no PTO later. They want you to stay working while "avoiding burn out". They're "support", is to give you more information on how to manage burnout while you literally are on survival mode trying to meet unrealistic expectations. 

I’ve been working with Brave Health for over a year now supporting our Providers, and it continues to be one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had. This is not my first telehealth start-up job, and knowing that Brave is in a period of considerable growth when I was hired, I was prepared for the quick pacing, changes in processes & policies, and adapting to new systems and tools as we gather data about how to best reach our patient population as we scale. I have learned more in the last year than I did in at least 2 or 3 years in previous roles, and because of Brave’s size and stage of growth, I have opportunities to work on interesting, impactful projects that wouldn’t be possible at a larger organization. My input and perspective is not only valued and regularly asked for, but is actually taken into account when implementing or updating processes; it is clear that management has the mentality of “we are all in this together” and cares deeply about employee perspectives on how to improve. Sometimes the rate of growth can be stressful, with long days occasionally being necessary to hit key milestones, but the problems we’ve solved and the scalability that we have been able to accomplish in a short amount of time makes those occasional sprints worth it. My coworkers are rock stars, and some of the most thoughtful, hardworking, and compassionate people I’ve ever met. I’m also incredibly grateful for the management team, who not only value transparency and are available for employees at a moment’s notice, but also are strong proponents of self-care, encouraging us to take our well-deserved vacation time, and rolling up their own sleeves to do hard work right alongside their employees. I log off every day knowing I am appreciated, my work is meaningful, and that Brave Health is doing everything it can to deliver quality community health to the people who need it most.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Brave Health is the gold standard for training and development. I have worked at other big name virtual tele-health companies (that I won't mention here) so I have a point of comparison. I will say that Brave has an approach that is different from other companies. The training for me was similar to bootcamp, but in a good way. I would rather be thrown into the lion's den with training and learning that way rather than being told how to do something only to forget half of what was told to you later. The leadership and supervisors/team leads are all very professional and helpful. Not to mention that the entire staff here are very "team-focused" and will help you in any way possible. If I don't know something, then I feel confident that I can ask anyone and they will sincerely try to answer the question or provide feedback. Lastly, the atmosphere/culture is vibrant, positive and motivational! If you don't have the "pep in your step" then you may need to look somewhere else. Can't say enough about this place and I glad to be a part of the growth that is happening here! Great benefits package and great pay! 


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The stress here working at Brave Health is the same with any company you work for. However, your stress is acknowledged and rewarded with excellent PTO and benefits package as well as compensation. The peer-support within various avenues within Brave is what makes the culture of this company stand out from the rest. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Again, colleagues here are "with you" as you work and do your clinical work. You have peer support from every angle, not to mention the training staff here is phenomenal! All I can say is Wow! If you don't know something, there is a document that shows you how or you have a very knowledgeable training staff at your fingertips. Leadership and training are both very responsive to your needs here. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. I can count on a full caseload every week and having individual supervision biweekly and group supervision weekly. We all have groups that allow us to bounce ideas and concerns off of each other throughout the week.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Started with decent benefits like PTO, annual wellness bonus, and insurance. However, they are slowly cutting down on benefits to save costs.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No matter what you do, management will find something that you are doing wrong. It is a weakness based company that utilizes micromanagement, blaming tactics and unrealistic standards to pressure therapists into excessive workloads that they will never be content with. Management expects you to have a high caseload and 8 hour days with no admin time. If you manage to keep up with care hours, they will be upset with overdue notes, overdue employee trainings, unread emails, etc. This company does not care about it's staff or it's clients. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Constant micromanagement with a weakness focused mentality. Don't expect to receive adequate supervision, support or encouragement. If you identify policy concerns or practices that will negatively impact client care and/or therapist abilities, the concern will be ignored and explained away with a scripted response.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I had to login early everyday in order to keep up with administrative tasks and often had to work through lunch. You are scheduled with 8 clients per day, with no administrative time to complete notes, respond to client outreach and remaining up to date on changes within the company through emails and messages. If you do not have 8 clients on your scheduled you have to spend your time trying to find ways to fill slots at the last minute, competing with all your colleagues to get new clients added to your already full caseload. Management will only focus on care hours and not take into account things like holiday seasons, legitimate client cancelations (due to sickness, childcare, travel), and will ultimately blame therapists for things well out of your control.

Working at Brave Health has been an amazing opportunity for me to say the least. Being a newly graduate, it was scary trying to figure out what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. I knew the goal for me is to become an LCSW but I was lost on how to prepare for the exam and where in the world I was going to get 1500 clinical hours from. Brave Health popped up indeed during my time of stress and everything that was listed fit exactly what I needed and wanted. I’ve been with Brave Health for 3 months now and it has been an extraordinary journey. I feel that I have mastered up my clinical skills and confidence. Brave Health is a company of growth and change, and change can seem scary but having that fear won’t get you places. Brave Health takes risks for the sake of their clients and honestly I admire them for it. I have to be completely honest, yes at times it’s stressful, yes change does happen frequently only because it is a growing company. Some days you feel like you’re drowning but I assure you with the support, understanding, reassurance, and compassion this company offers, you will be able to swim to the top again. Brave Health offers so many benefits for you it’s literally insane (3 weeks PTO, Healthcare, CEUs, LCSW prep-course, pay for certifications, etc) and the team is constantly coming up with ideas on how they can cater to their employees. Brave Health is definitely not for everyone but for the ones with the quirky personalities, the hard workers, the ones who are pursuing their career in a more clinical setting, the ones who are open-minded, and the ones who aren’t scared of putting themselves out there this could be a place for you. We all want to find that perfect job right? And no, I’m not saying Brave Health is perfect but it is a better transition from places I’ve worked before. Give it a shot and see if Brave Health is a fit for you.
